5:46 Okay. This is a weird pick for a favorite, but I'm fine with it. 6:33 Another Hot Dog Commercial? Okay. I'm still fine. 7:18 I think I'm starting to see a trend in this video. 8:47 Oh My God!!! There are too many Dogs! Imagine if there's an entire clip show of Hot Dog Ads! 9:50 I should've had my big mouth shut. 10:20 That's a lot of Dog. 10:41 ALRIGHT! I think we got the point.

I grew up in Miami, FL. and was lucky to attend a dozen or so drive-in theatre films at the Tropicaire Drive-Inn on Bird Rd. By the time I was old enough to really enjoy the movies (9-10) the projector was removed and the theatre closed permanently. I never saw any of these concession stand ads or intermissions. I remember only one and that was one that said, "PIZZA! PIZZA! PIZZA!" and then showed a picture of the counter with a smiling man holding a pizza and a kid and his parents smiling back at him. I was a kid who loved him some pizza! The last movie I saw there was "The Black Cauldron" which scared the crap out of me. At least the open-air Flea Market lasted for a couple years after the theatre closed. That was our Sunday activity, going to pick cool vintage stuff with my dad and my brother.

What may seem an obsession with getting people to go to the concession center was an economic necessity. Drive-in theaters made their revenue only from concession sales. Admission paid for the cost of procuring the movies. There was no profit in it, unless people bought lots of concessions and trinkets on sale.
@marcusmiro7481
@marcusmiro7481 2 жыл бұрын
This is still the case. Theaters make pennies off ticket sales (literally.) Their entire business model is concessions. Unfortunately, wages have not grown with concession prices, so now everything is grossly expensive vs. how much it used to cost. That said, people should visit smaller local theaters. They won't have the newest blockbusters, but they often screen amazing classics, and frequently have some of the best brand new indie films. Their ticket prices and concession prices are usually way more reasonable, and a lot of them serve alcohol :D.

@@marcusmiro7481 Other problems that wiped out Drive-Ins were unpredictable weather, and Daylight Savings Time. Where I live is the westernmost extent of the Eastern Times Zone and in mid-July through August the sun doesn't set until about 9:40 pm. Back when the movie industry was a thing, teenagers were expected to get jobs, and movie theaters were one option. For me, it was the 1980s. We sold hot dogs. The order of customer preference seemed to be: popcorn, candy, nachos, hot dogs. I don't think I ever sold a hot dog to a teenager or younger. I never ate one myself, either as employee or guest. (As an employee, I didn't trust them.) Too weirdly substantial for a movie, I think, plus kind of hard to control the dripping ketchup and mustard in the dark. Men 30 and up got hot dogs. They were clearly influenced by this rather MASSIVE pork-push as shown in the theaters during the 1960s and 70s. Never understood our country's fascination with weeners at events like sports games and movies. Popcorn had been around since the start of the movies almost; when did the hot dog conspiracy start? 1950s? Trying to compete with TV, where you could simply watch a show while eating a simple sandwich? I'm sure someone knows the fascinating whys of all this?

Cable TV and Daylight Saving Time hurt the drive-in business. More people staying at home to watch movies on cable. DST on the western edge of a time zone (like where I grew up in Indiana at the western extent of Eastern Time) meant that drive-ins in summer could not start their movies until about 9:40 pm.
