I like how they have their Expressways Laid out in Japan, they have to compromise because of the small area they have to work with, the engineers are pretty darn smart.
@Darknecros77 жыл бұрын
As for the expressways in Japan, I just LOVE those signs that have all the arrows and stuff. The black sections of those actually light up yellow or red depending on traffic congestion. Once you learn to comprehend what those particular signs mean, you can use those to your advantage.

and most of these expressways were built in 1960s for tokyo olympics. Still good looking 😀 ===== misc 1:31 if you see the exit to the left, it was supposed to be an extension/branch line to the city center. But it's eventually scrapped for unknown reason (maybe fellow Japanese could help answer this?)

That bridge at 1:54, I think it used to be an old bridge over the water. But they pumped out the water of the canal and built an expressway instead on the bottom of the kanal (in the 1960's?). Japan's second largest town Osaka still has water in its famous downtown channel though.

Very polite drivers, using their hazard to say thank you I also heard it means sorry too if you do something stupid. I wish people here in California would do that more often. One time I almost got hit by a toyota camry who was speeding on the freeway. LOL We decided to go in the same lane at the same time. He or she did apologize by turning on the hazards. Maybe that driver is from Japan....
@thenoodledrop4 жыл бұрын
Planned so much better than American urban freeways. Seems like the engineers had a great grasp of induced demand when designing this road. Knew that bigger wouldn’t mean better. Also probably didn’t use the road as an excuse for slum clearance and urban renewal

@mountainous_port5 жыл бұрын
Instead of freeways, Manila needs a massive wide network of public transport. So that people will commute instead. Efficient public transit is the key to city traffic.

Some of the comments on here indicate that the Japanese are the only ones that can engineer such a road system. This is not true, they engineer a road system like this because they have to, they don't have a choice. Tokyo is crammed in to one small island and there is simply no room to go outward so they go up. It costs a lot more money to build system of roads like this then the traditional method.
@youcanpunchmeintheface5 жыл бұрын
yes, it costs time and energy to come up with such system.

Weird looking freeways over there. It's so bizarre how small they are and how they have no shoulder also how is there like no traffic on them? They are only 2-3 Lanes wide and those freeways are in a major metropolitan area. NYC freeways are much more congested and they are similarly sized and laid out what's reason tokyos have so Much less traffic?

In Michigan, we can go 70 MPH (112 KPH) on many of our expressways. It seems as though Tokoyo expressways are restricted to 50 KPH (31 MPH). That seams really slow compared to Michigan. Almost takes the express out of expressway. LOL
@user-oi5ff4vb1w8 жыл бұрын
They are restricted to 60 KPH (35 MPH)
@jedrorm8 жыл бұрын
+Lance As you'll note these are hyper urban expressways. In the US the government can take land very easily, in Japan land take is difficult, expensive and often controversial. As a result expressways in the centre city take winding routes along existing right of ways, and are quite narrow. These require a low speed. The low speed limit also reduces the chance of a crash, which increase the reliability of the motorway system. Outside of the central city you'd find much faster motorways.
@reallyjustrandom12308 жыл бұрын
They are looking at actually increasing to 80PH or about120KPH
@reallyjustrandom12308 жыл бұрын
Not to mention anywhere you want to go is about a 10 minute drive without traffic, Where I live I work in the city and at 50 MPH it would take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get to work without traffic. Also I am sure land is not easy to take there because there is no land to move the displaced resident or business.

1:19 , 1:23 disastrous merge. 1:00- 1:19 no shoulder !
@goishikaiganmademou6 жыл бұрын
1:19-1.23 is a police car parking. No other cars are allowed to enter. You can see that the parked vans are upper white lower black like all Japanese police cars. No shoulder: The speed limit is just 50 km/h so no shoulders are needed
