I think my favorite thing about Driven like 20 years after the fact is the focus on how all the crashes were like death wrecks and the movie was released on a weekend where IRL has one of its biggest crashes till the reformation (Atlanta 2001) and CART has to cancel a race because the conditions could kill someone (Texas 2001). Because i feel like that's what they sold their movie on besides Stallone....Death! Danger! and Destruction! Also somehow the CGI dude somehow got work after this as he as of a couple years ago worked for the animation studio Rooster Teeth. Also another thing on the whole realism of the movie/characterization of this movie is in the pool scene, there's like a 2-5 second insert shot that shows us that apparently Jimmy Bly is famous enough is his rookie year to get his own video game/simulator program called "Jimmy Bly's Race Sim." Its the goofiest stuff. Part of me thinks Denny Hamlin's in on the joke cause if you go in expecting it to suck its an absolutely hilarious movie, (or maybe just didn't want to default to the Days of Thunder answer) but if he's serious than he might wanna give it a second watch just to confirm that lmao.

_Driven_ is seen as auto racing's version of the wrestling movie _Ready to Rumble._ Both involved fledgling companies _(Driven_ being CART & _Ready to Rumble_ being WCW). Both were 'meh' in terms of movie quality but does have some sort of redeeming quality to it. _Ready to Rumble's_ being the Triple Cage match which WCW actually used twice. _Driven's_ was the soundtrack; One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard from a movie. It's why I have the songs "Out of Control" by The Chemical Brothers, the remix of "Mother" by ERA, & the instrumental version of "I'm Not Driving Anymore" by Rob Dougan. If I had the instrumentals to the entire movie I could listen to that all day. Both movies also put a couple of guys on the map: _Ready to Rumble_ being David Arquette & _Driven_ being Kip Pardue. Prior to his role in _Remember the Titans_ (Which funny enough came out a year before _Driven,_ which shows you how much I cared/knew about football movies), _Driven_ was literally the only reason I knew who Kip Pardue was... Also for character development, the Jimmy Bly character got a bit more than what was led on. He went from immature to very mature throughout the video, learning that winning wasn't everything especially during the Memo Moreno scene. Beau Brandonberg had a similar transformation but on a smaller scale. His development was more of learning to be more open & less serious. Even Joe Tanto had a bit of development learning how to adjust to help Jimmy Bly though he wasn't his driving type & mentored through different ways, not to mention his own comeback from a near fatal accident... I will also say where you think not enough attention was given to Moreno & the explosion scene after the crash in comparison to Bly is a bit off. He got a lot. Referencing _Remember the Titans_ it was more like how Gerry Bertier was in scenes after his accident. Really it was only Carl Henry who didn't develope. Burt Renoylds' character is more like the bitter car owner who prioritizes 1 ride over all others: Basically how I saw Roush in the late 90's-Mid 2000's & Stewart-Haas & Hendrick for the longest time even up to now. In the end, sure _Driven_ wasn't the best racing movie, but it sure as heck wasn't the worst either... Heck I can rewatch _Driven_ but I just can't rewatch _Talladega Nights_ (Minus that one news report involving Bob Jenkins). I've literally watched that movie start to finish only once!... Also if you think _Driven_ was unrealistic, _Herbie: Fully Loaded_ anybody!?... That being said I will say one more thing... if you thought that Memo Moreno's car explosion scene was extreme, it could have been even *MORE* extreme! Don't believe me? Just listen to Paul Page's Dinner with Racers interview. When _Driven_ was brought up, that was the part that stuck out to me during that part of the conversation. XD

This film has NOT aged well after seeing it in full last week, I haven't seen it since like 2007-08. The CGI rivals The Rock's stuff in Scorpion King. Sure it was primitive but not good even for 2001 standards. To think this was supposed to be an F1 film (explaining the Winfield hat because it was Williams sponsor from 1998-99, the OG dark era) and it's future V8 sounds was obvious what they really wanted lol. My new joke is that Driven tested the 2006 F1 V8s six years before it became a thing. Also, there was some awful cuts and bad camera shots (the 180 rule was broken then and there). Let's not forget the crashes, helmets don't move (ex. the Visteon car aka Robert Moreno's ride) when they crash. Of course, what Paul Page said on DWR, kids were supposed to die at Belle Isle (think the race at Spa in Grand Prix), the Memo Moreno explosion was much worse and there's one clip where they tried to do a Jos Verstappen pit fire. Flaws isn't an understatement and of course Estella Warren flamed out after this and Kangaroo Jack. At least the soundtrack and the Papis, Montoya and Kenny Brack (the Shell guy) scene was solid.

Driven, it's so bad, it's good. And honestly, before this video I thought it was just bad overall, but now I can see it was a movie that's a sad reminder that it could have been a great movie had it not been for lack of character and story development. Imagine if they developed a proper intro such as the accident that ended up putting Joe out of the sport and Jimmy ending up getting the call up from the owner and that this kid gets put into the best car on the field and thrust into stardom at a young age and...well, yeah. Jeez, is Stallone that bad of a director and visionary that he couldn't do something like that?

This movie was my introduction to racing, at all, way back when all I was interested in was Age of Empires II. Thankfully I didn't learn much from it, it just sort of sat there dormant until I came home from my first year of uni and spent the summer playing the first Forza Motorsport. That's when the bug really kicked in. It wasn't until recently (like, last 2 or 3 years) that I started looking into the American racing scene enough to really grasp how wide a swing-and-miss this was. It took me aaaages to find out where the hell the German round was supposed to be.

A solid review of this horrible movie. I never gave it much thought before, but now I understand why Days of Thunder's drama worked and this one didn't. That movie gave explanations and decent backstories for why the main characters acted the way they did about certain things. Sure, it wasn't perfect and could have used more polish when it came to their character development, but at least I could get behind their motivations. This train wreck of a movie on the other hand? No. There are so many unanswered questions about the characters, from Tanto, Carl, Jimmy Bly, his jackass of a brother, Tanto's ex wife. Heck, there's even unanswered questions about Brandenburg as well, and the movie for the most part does next to nothing to address them. I'll never understand what Stallone was thinking here. You can't just have all these characters acting a certain way and then don't explain WHY they do, especially if they're so unlikable. Maybe if the movie gave some screen time explaining their psyche somewhat, we might have been able to understand them better and possibly not hate them as much. At the very least, he should have explained what Tanto did exactly to make so many people in the movie have a grudge against him, especially considering how much if affected them. Just having vague descriptions about it is pointless because for all we know as you put it, Tanto is indeed a horrible person that tried to kill Brandenburg during a race for the fun of it. Maybe he left his wife because he was a jackass that was fooling around with someone else. Yea, it's highly unlikely I suppose considering his reaction to their accusations, but still, the movie left so much of his backstory, personality, motivations on the table that it could be interpreted multiple ways. The real tragedy about Driven is that this movie could have certainly been just as good as Days of Thunder, if not better. The potential for a solid racing movie was certainly there, but due to having people working on it who clearly had no idea what they were doing, this is what we got instead. What a shame...

If you raise your eyebrow at the timing, remember it took four years to raise the capital to make this flick, too. Stallone wanted to make a movie about F1 in '97, and if it was gonna be about CART, by the second half of the '90s, CART was still big. I mean, big enough that Sega and Midway were making games about it. I wonder if Stallone couldn't have taken some inspiration, if he could, from Mansell's disastrous 1995 season with McLaren? Y'know, the run so bad it practically put him off open-wheel racing since when he _did_ get back to motorsports, it was in 1998 with touring cars? Tanto doesn't want another clown shoes season, and thinks maybe guiding Bly is how to prevent it, we go from that... I often like to joke that the reason things in Driven look the way they do is because they installed all the sets of wings upside-down.

Some of the most cringe dialogue and acting in the history of film. Mix in some dodgy early 00’s CGI and this film is one of the biggest pieces of shit, ever. Nice soundtrack though. SO BAD.

Til Schwager? It's pronounced Schwaiger or Schweyger.
