That is called a Ruben's Tube. It works by pumping in propane from one end and having a speaker placed at the opposite end of the tube. There are holes on top of the tube, you light the gas on fire and the change in sound pressure waves with change the heights of the flames. The mythbusters did a video on this and you can find it on here if you search for it.

For everyone talking about the lyrics: this song was just a prelude to a new album they wrote. Trust me when I say I've heard a lot of their stuff and these guys' lyrics are some of the deepest, most profound that you'll find from any new band these days. In fact, the lyrics of this song have to do with the content of the rest of the album and they come back up later. It's like reading a really awesome book if you listen the whole way through.
