No none of us can even begin to imagine what they must be going thru. However, I remember in the US back in the early 1970's, inexperienced kid drivers were having similar fates from excessive partying and drinking and driving and no seat belts and excessive speed and managed to always find the one tree or telephone pole and many of my friends in high school were killed that way. For that reason, my dad delayed us kids from getting drivers license by about 7 years timeframe. Kids driving and feeling the freedom of driving do not yet understand physics and momentum.

When our son got his drivers licence, he was forbidden to have more than one passenger for 6 months, then we allowed him to have two passengers up until he had his licence for twelve months. How did we monitor this I can hear you saying, I mean once he pulled out of our driveway what was stopping him from totally ignoring us. It was sheer honesty on his part and dumb luck on ours, but it worked. We did this for three reasons, one, because we never wanted our son to be in the same position as this poor young man, second, we wanted him to concentrate on his driving skills and thirdly, being responsible for other lives in his car was a serious responsibility. As responsible parents it was up to us to protect him from himself as much as we could. He is now 36, a happy but safe man.

Little did I know my mum and her boyfriend had run into an old friend from school and they spent the night drinking and catching up, as you do. When it was time to pick them up they had asked if I could also bring their friend home. I had noticed by now there were not enough seats to be able to do this so I politely refused. Again they asked, but this time with a more 'ohh cmon it'll be alright!" But I more sternly refused this time around. I didn't want to get pulled over and have my licence taken from me or worse, cause serious injuries to whomever isn't wearing a seatbelt on the way home. I used my brain, even at 18 years of age, and common sense to make the right decision that night, despite the pleas from my parents to just do it anyway. Who knows what could have happened if I had made the stupid decision. Actions have consequences. My point is, these kids knew right from wrong. We all do. @@gutz1981 I am not sure what you were trying to say. What do you mean by ‘under crediting’. You refer to straight A students, people who were cool, rich sporty, did drugs. What has any of that got to do with this kid or any of the kids who were killed. The simple fact is it doesn’t matter who these kids were or who the driver was before the accident. Many of us, who also were the boring - non-sporty, non-rich, non-cool, non-drug taking crowd and were generally seen as doing the right thing - still feel the tragedy of what has happened, both for the families of the kids who died and the driver who survived. I am really upset because 30 years ago I arrived at work one Monday morning. I saw one of my colleagues and asked how she was. She didn’t say anything but held up the local paper which had the pictures of 4 local teenagers on its front page, including our 17 year old office junior, and the word ‘Killed’. She and 3 of her friends had been killed in a similar road accident on the weekend. This accident has triggered those memories for me. Our office junior was a few weeks short of her 18th birthday. She was excited to be turning 18 and to finally becoming an adult. I don’t know what her friends or she was like at school, or which crowd they moved in. He clearly had not been adequately taught how to be responsible with his motor vehicle, had not had adequate mentorship and examples set by a responsible adult on being responsible with his motor vehicle and had not been made aware of how YOU are responsible for ALL occupants of your vehicle. At the end of the day 5 young people are dead and nothing will bring them back. Our thoughts go out to their families and while yes this young man made a reckless choice and cost others their lives and absolutely should face some sort of punishment or consequence for this it is still okay to acknowledge that he'll live with this guilt for the rest of his life. What's not okay (for those judging him) is acting holier than thou and acting as though you've never made a reckless decision in your entire life that could have potentially put others at risk. None of us know this young man personally so don't pretend to know how he was thinking during the event stating that he probably didn't care or won't care in the future.
