The only thing I thought would be more effective is that gradients would have been eliminated with simultaneous level crossing removals at some spots like for example Regent. It got left out real bad :( I also notice that if Keon Park’s got removed Thomastown might have a removal potential too but they decided to rebuild Thomastown station already...

As more stations are rebuilt with Skyrail, platforms are being built with straight edges. As the lines become fully grade separated and fenced, with very narrow gaps at the platform edge (only possible if it’s straight), the possibility of installing platform screen doors and introducing driverless operations opens up - a la Sydney’s M1 Hills District line. At that point there’s basically no reason to run infrequent services off-peak.

A busy time of day, with trains running only 1 or 2 minutes apart. I understand that the camera lens makes the train seem slow, but it does appear that they stop and start quite gently. Easier on the equipment, I suppose, but quite unlike some other urban rail systems. With all the twists and turns and with many stops close together, higher speed is impractical. I note some stations platforms on curves - one must really "mind the gap"!

On the South Morang Line as of 2018, the Mernda Rail Extension from South Morang to Mernda was completed which included 3 new stations at Middle Gorge, Hawkstowe and Mernda. Middle Gorge Station was built on ground level and Hawkstowe and Mernda Stations were built above ground with skyrail. And that train line is now called the Mernda Line. And as of 2019, the level crossing at High Street, Reservoir was removed by building an elevated rail bridge with a new elevated Reservoir Station. Then as of 2022, the 4 level crossings at Murray Road, Cramer Street, Bell Street and Oakover Road in Preston were removed by building a 2 km elevated rail bridge with 2 new elevated stations at Bell and Preston. Now under construction, is the level crossing removal at Keon Parade, Keon Park which will be removed by 2025 by building an elevated rail bridge with a new elevated Keon Park Station.

Thanks for posting! I had to travel between Balaclava and Epping as a teen back in the 90s. Epping was end of the line, a shed on the platform in a cow filled paddock! Travel time was 90mins each way.

@@tressteleg1 5:41 am - Balaclava 18 min wait till .... 6:14 am from Flinders. Trains left on time most of the time. The biggest inconvenience were the train strikes all the time! Horrible old blue carriages were like ovens in the summer and freezers in the winter. Full of rubbish and cigarette smoke. Kids spraying graffiti in the carriages, junkies injecting under the seats! Transport officers would beat the shit out of your ticket had expired, even by 5 mins. Nah, way way better today. No queuing for tickets, myki is a way better system. Cleaner carriages with climate control, drivers tell you whats going on when there is a delay, hardly any train strikes. People seem to be less resilient now days and start whining when a train is not up to impeccable standards. I don't know how they would have coped 25 years ago!

Interesting to see the anti-SPAD device tied into the signalling (The little white construction beside the left-hand rail) - 24:22 is a nice example: if a train passes a signal at Danger, the brakes are in tripped on by this mechanism and the train stops (in theory) 😰 Remarkable to see West Richmond station so clearly from North Richmond!

Signaling blocks are too widely separated, however modern track, good fencing. Level crossings all have to be removed, lot of on the cheap construction when first built. Melbourne is very flat could have been built with much straighter track, some areas are very humpy, I've caught trains on this line from Reservoir, in the early 60's, It was an "outer suburb" in those days. The section between Reservoir and Melbourne is still a little ricketty, fencing missing in places. The curves and points at Clifton Hill were poorly thought out, turn of the century engineering, a few very close spaced stations.

Parts of the track are modern but there are still miles of wooden sleepers which disappeared from Sydney years ago. Also miles of unfenced track seem to cause no problems. Brisbane fenced lines have had deaths where people cut holes to cross tracks. Apparently the signal problem is irregular spacing. Seems Sydney is more even which helps headways. A few lines have speed, but mostly trains just amble along.

29:47, what appears to be green coated cyclone fencing as a reasonable way to discourage graffiti. it needs to be more securely mounted. and i'd suggest another layer suspended about 50 mm off the first layer. if they want to tag through it, it is very wasteful of their paint. they can't steal all of it. it costs them lots of money to be shitheads.

@@megaloblabber2948, i think having some legal places to paint is good. tagging trains and fences is a different matter. there are big fines. some infamous yank tagger copped a 6 month sentence on his first offence. remember there are far more serious crimes than tagging. if these taggers set out to do objects of art instead of just scribbling their name we'd think differently. note the grain silos with blue heelers and such things painted on them. they were done by graffiti "artists". the house i live in used to be a favourite spot for graffiti. it got painted over almost immediately. as a result, there are places where the paint is about 10mm thick

Even in the 60s, there was just a few in Sydney. The one behind Liverpool Hospital which is still there, another I think around Merrylands, while others at Como, National Park, and the Parramatta Road crossing of the Carlingford line are all now history. Additionally I think there are some on the Richmond line and that is about all in the suburban area. Melbourne would still have dozens.

As a Canadian who's watched lots of these videos I'd have to guess we're onboard a Comeng by the electric motor sound

If you go to the 5:05 time point, you will soon see precisely what train we are riding. This type of train has a fairly ordinary single tone honk. The Comeng has a multi tone squawk. The “gear noise“ you are hearing is purely electronic and at times sounds overpoweringly weird. The third type of train in general service is the Siemens and the electronic sounds are much less, but their horn is fairly similar to that of this type of train. The Comeng trains are the only ones with discernible gear sounds, and these are heard on acceleration, and generally on braking as well. Unfortunately the Comeng trains are already being phased out as new trains arrive. Once you get away from the city area, you may see Comeng tains on a line, but only ever one of the two types of modern trains as well.

@anareel4562 Ah yes, Toronto. I’ve been there once or twice and thought I put the video on KZbin, but apparently not. I do remember the “watermelon“ double deck carriages but don’t remember the motive power. Perhaps they are not run by TTC and still in the dark ages of noisy smelly diesel engines - that’s unfortunate. Unfortunately travel these days seems to be quite expensive as I think that airlines are still still trying to catch up on lost income during Covid, so a trip this far would be expensive for you, I expect. Maybe one day. I don’t think that any new trains are being delivered to Melbourne at present and the next batch is still in the development stage so the Comeng trains should last for a while yet.

@@tressteleg1 their allegedly planning on electrifying the GO Transit network on most core lines, granted this is Toronto where we talk about a project for 75+ years before doing anything (Ontario Line/Downtown Relief Line). I think they us EMD MP45s I think, I miss the old GP38s, my dad used to work for GO Transit years ago, I was allowed to operate a GP38 at the age of like 7 or 8, the 90s was a different time.

I’m not familiar with those loco types, don’t follow diesels closely. ‘Sly drives’ here were much easier in the 80s, but cameras everywhere and rules being enforced have made it almost impossible now. Even cab rides by off-duty employees forbidden now.

The new outer section is revival of an old line with bridges added. These videos show that many lines have hills and bends which the passenger does not notice.

Melbourne did have a four car double-decker train. Do a Google search about 4D train Melbourne. I think its biggest problem was that the whole concept of double-decker trains was a Sydney idea. Their choice to remain as a single deck system is causing them to pay dearly now with overloaded trains in the peak hour and reducing the number of seats to provide more standing space. Melbourne. The place not to be.

Yes same builder but heavily modified to make it compatible with Comeng trains. I heard once that that was the a major factor in its unreliability. And one-off trains and trams are usually hated by most drivers and maintenance people. So it was doomed from the start. Cut up early 2000s.

It is a safety feature to prevent the wheels from diverging off the tracks in the event of a derailment. Usually found on bridges and sharp curves, maybe here to protect the platform faces

When more of the platform was in use, that left turn was to go around any train standing in the next bit of platform. They have simply not bothered to tidy up the tracks to suit today. Why bother?, they say, it still works ☹️

When these lines were built, stations were often close together, but try closing any stations today and there would be massive whinging. Surrey Hills/Mont Albert people were not happy losing theirs.

I think the same way, but it just depends who I am speaking to as to what I call it. Eventually we will all have to change or nobody will know what we’re talking about. After all, if you mentioned the Bank of New South Wales, who would know you mean Westpac?

Yeah, Melbourne Central, which in fact is hardly in the middle of the city, but as the museum itself is no longer across the road, I guess the name Museum had to go.
