DRIVER WITH 3 WOOD SHAFT v 3 WOOD WITH DRIVER SHAFT
Many golfers talk about shortening the length of the driver shaft but what if you used a longer shaft in your 3 wood? In this video Ali changes the shafts around to see what the results would be.

I just tested this exactly last week during my club fitting and the smash factor jumped up to 1.48 on average from 1.43 with the driver shaft, gained 3mph chs plus 15 yards carry. Not to mention i felt like i can really swing hard without thinking. So i ended up going with 44 inch driver shaft after.

I got a Cleveland 7 wood with senior(lady's) shaft. My son who regularly lands his Cobra driver at 280 metres loves it. He hits it about 200 metres when it falls straight down and gently turns right. I hit it 170 metres straight, 90%. We play metres in Australia.

Maybe because you're over 6ft the short shaft in your driver didn't suit? I'm 5ft7 and took and inch off my driver shaft and getting ALOT more fairways and distance, and keeping me playing to my 7 hcap. A good switch for me without a doubt.

That’s interesting to hear Neil. I’m same height and play standard length in all my clubs (bought off rack mostly) but now that I have taken more of an interest I will go get fitted and look at taking an inch off all clubs. Makes absolute sense when you think about it!

I cut my driver down to 44 inches and my 3 wood to 42.5 inches, then back weighted each club 10 grams. The club head feels the same when I swing and my strikes are more consistent and centered. Contact is solid more than with the longer shafts. My shot dispersion improved and distance increased 3-5 yards when hit solidly. I can also feel the shaft load and unload due to the back weighting. I don’t think what I did is very scientific, but I can’t argue with my results. My advice…if you decide to try what I did, try it with old clubs before taking a chance of ruining a $400 driver/$300 fairway wood. In case you’re wondering, I’m now playing with a driver & 3 wood, both made by Titleist, that are fifteen years old. I sold my expensive driver and 3 wood.

My driver shaft is 2" shorter than standard which is still .5" longer than a 3 wood for my Callaway Rogue. I was struggling with it and was getting decent results choking up to the very end of the grip of the standard length so I got another driver shaft with 2" removed from the butt end to test this so I could grip at the end and I've enjoyed it so far. My consistency and confidence have gone way up, and finding the middle of the face has seen my average drives level out, but my top end used to be 280-290 yards is now around 270-280, which isn't that big of a difference. Try it out for yourself. My driver has gone from a liability to usable, not quite an asset yet but still an improvement.

It would be interesting to see also what happens with a 3 wood shaft on the driver with re-swingweighting of the new combination (the driver head is lighter of course than the 3 head despite its huge size).

Back in the day, this is what the original Callaway Big Bertha felt like. My first BB club was a Warbird 3-wood, and the shaft length was as long as my steel headed driver. No surprise I hit it roughly the same. That was a long time before launch monitor technology was available!!

I am exploring the same thing with driver and a 3 wood shaft - but a question…did you adjust the weight of the head? Taking an inch off reduces swingweight by 6 points, so it takes 12 grams of weight to the head to add it back. Just curious…?

@julia-6195

It doesn't matter. Mass of the clubhead doesn't change. Making the clubhead heavier to compensate for SW could slow the swing due to shorter radius.

Probably takes a while to get used to the new lengths. If I tried to hit a long drive driver at 48 inches in length, I am sure my first five shots would be inconsistent to say the least. I am a fan of slightly shorter driver lengths. Mine is 45 inches. Not much shorter than standard but when I hit a 45.5 or 45.75 inch driver, it takes me a bit of time to adapt.

Great video. Ping put the lengths of shafts on their Driver and 3 wood so they are balanced. A 45” shaft on a 3wood will change the swing weight far too much, that’s why you had trouble getting control of it as the shaft is too long for the 3 Wood head weight. It’s like wearing a size 12 shoe when you’re really a size 10. You’ll be able to walk, but you certainly won’t be able to run! 😂😂😂

From what I understand the average driver length on the PGA tour is 44". Bubba Watson is 6' 3" and plays a 44.5" driver. I haven't cut the shaft of my 46" driver but I do grip down 1 or 2 inches. Feels more in control, more accurate and distance doesn't seem to be affected.

@wilsonhung8654

Driver and fairway woods are of .335 inch hosel size, and most hybrids have .370 parallel hosel size. They don't fit each other, even with their respective adapters on. In addition, .335 and .370 shafts would have fundamental differences that are too big to compare.

Several KZbinrs have been playing around with changing shaft lengths on various clubs, but they are all making the same fundamental mistake. If you change the shaft length then you are changing the swing weight of that club, which potentially affects the results that you are trying to achieve. So if you are changing shaft length first of all check what the swing weight is, then recheck the swing weight with the new length of shaft and then add or remove weight to the head accordingly to get the swing weight back to where it should be. For the vast majority of adult male golfers, driver shaft length should be between 44 & 45 inches. Sadly many new drivers from manufacturers are coming with driver shafts of 45.5 inches and longer, which will affect strike, distance and accuracy!
