If you were to bring wet tires to 100 races and it only rained once, costing you lets say 100 for every race but making 100 000 for that race you brought wet tires, you would make 900 per race just for bringing wet tires to a track where there is 1% chance of rain.

For those that will never pilot a single seater and who REALLY want to know what it's like at a fraction of the performance levels get your butt into a tandem F1/Indy car. I've always loved F1 and Indy. Hit the track in regular cars. Spend almost 20 years on high performance bikes but one day back in 08 after just joining the military I worked a military booth at the LBGP (I also happened to pretty much live IN the circuit every year for 10 years) They asked if I wanted to go around the track a few times. This was before they opened. Oh yea. Let's do this. Away we went in the 2 seater. I was used to speed so that really didn't do much for me. On the third lap the world changed. Still no big deal with the raw speed. Bikes have done away with tunnel vision. The turns were another matter. WOW. Ok. Those are some good Gs. It was the brakes.. Like hitting a freaking tree! I could feel my face leaving my skull while looking at me knees. YOU OK? YEA!! How fast can you go without getting in trouble? He said nothing. We went down the straight SIGNIFICANTLY faster. What have I just done? Then my right eye was in my left socket and my left eye was in my ear. My neck filed for divorce on the 3rd turn. Instead of a tree we used a solid rock wall to slow down. The level of grip is INSANE! There is no street equivalent. I can still feel those braking G forces to this very day and we were still below real race speeds. If you get the chance to drive or ride at that level TAKE IT. The fact these guys can race like they do in the rain is just crazy. The grip and downforce are just otherworldly.

I've noticed that it seems quite common to talk about the track having more grip on the outside karting line, this is not as significant as the physics itself. I get that there's a bit more grip on the wider line but no-one ever talks about the actual change of direction physics involved in steering wheel angle. The steering wheel angle is a lot less when taking a wide entry and exit out of a corner. Keeping the wheels as much in line as possible is vital in the wet. The apex is not your friend in the wet because the steering angle is more than taking a wider line with a larger radius. Also braking into a wider radius line into a corner allows to brake deeper into the corner due to a smaller steering angle. Everyone knows that the lesser steering angle the better under braking. The less steering angle in the wet the faster you go.

Drove in the wet on a track first time recently. What I learned. 1. Rain line is wherever there is grip. 2. Rain line changes on the same turn from lap to lap. 3. Rain with falling temps is terrible, even if it’s still 10+ deg C+ (40+ deg F) which is still within the tyre’s ambient operating temp. 4. Softer is easier to drive confidently, and conversely, stiffer is less mistake tolerant. 5. Hated it. Thought I’d get the technique and be able to manage but never quite adjusted.

Amzing driving in the wet and no doubt the tyres, driving style, concentration levels and many other things come into play but one bug question i have is how do the drivers even see where they are going in all that spray. Its incredible the amount of water that is kicked back by the car in front. We have all driven in the rain and know how hard it is to see even with wipers on full so how do they do it with no wipers? I know they have tear off visors but seriously even tearing one off every few seconds your still blinded by the spray for sure. Amazing. Would love to know how they cope with visibility in those conditions if anyone has any in sight.
@ejtamayo53172 жыл бұрын
I always like to think that rain racing is like racing on dirt ovals. This is because in dirt, the track is constantly changing every lap, meaning that the line changes also. Typically, they start low, and the move high because that's where the most dirt is towards the end of the race. It's almost the same in f1. All the rain washes the rubber towards the outside of the corner. It's basically the opposite of what dirt racers do.
