In this video, Part 1 in a series, we’ll look at how to set up automations in DCC-EX, EX-Rail to help us run our trains. We’ll look at what EX-Rail is, some of its features, and how we can use it. In Part 2 in the series we go step by step through the process of creating a set of automations in EX-Rail to run one of our trains, and you can try it yourself on your layout. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fabKeHWjmMqXZtE After that we'll look at some more complex examples, so be sure to subscribe to the channel. All aboard! DD

Great intro DCC-EX-Rail video. Herbie and I are entertained. Last winter I did a very simple train station start, stop and start script using one optcal sensor. Now that Herbie has joined me this winter we will do something more complex getting our ideas from Scratchy and yourself. All the best!!

Wonderful! You're ahead of me! ; ) But glad that you and Herbie will have some fun winter projects. : ) Happy railroading! DD

I've become hooked on your videos for the last few months and have been waiting for your automation! Just started dabbling in EX-Rail myself and really liking your style of teaching! Thanks and give Scratchy-C a belly rub for a job well done!

You seem to have the most of the knowledge about this system, at the model train club we have a tams station controlled by a computer that runs jmri, this makes it so there's a track plan i can access via engine driver to switch my switches. I know i can add switches in the list but i'm wondering is there a way i can get this type of map jmri on pc gives on my arduino? and could you possibly make a video explaining how to if possible.

Thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. Unfortunately there is not a way to get the layout track plan from JMRI on the Arduino. The Arduino does not have that much power. However, you can access the JMRI track plan from any device that has a web browser (smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) as long as the JMRI web server is turned on as I describe in Video #5d - Using WiThrottle and Engine Driver with JMRI & DCC-EX. It is basically what you are already doing with Engine Driver, but can be on a device that does not run Engine Driver; it just needs a web browser. Some folks also use a Raspberry Pi, or a mini-PC to run JMRI. But again, anything with a web browser can access the JMRI track plan. Unfortunately, the Arduino doesn't have that capability. I wish it did. Thanks again and happy railroading! DD

Hello, am loving your series on DCC-EX, JMRI and the how to videos on the setup and how to get started. I am in the planning process of setting up my own railway layout (on a shoestring budget) Would it be possible to contact you directly in the future with questions regarding the setup of DCC-EX? Thanks and regards.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I really appreciate it. Best of luck setting up your new railway! It's literally all about the journey. Really the best way to reach me is with a comment in the videos. I can't always get to the computer, so It sometimes takes me a few days to reply, but I will. I am most knowledgeable about the topics I cover in the videos, and may not be able to help as much in other areas, but it never hurts to ask. Thanks again and happy railroading! DD
