I remember the one time Daihatsu tried getting into the US market, they simply made a LHD version of one of their Kei cars, and it sold horribly, with the i3 being so unbalanced that most people assumed they were broken off the lot. I even seen one for sale a few years ago in great condition, but the dude was selling it cheap cause "the engine runs rough don't know why"
I want a Daihatsu Wake, even though I live in California.

Thank you for uploading. I could already read from your description that the Wake's NA 52PS engine lacks behind the N-Box 58PS engine in terms of acceleration. I had the impression that the sound insulation is quite good in this car, what were your first hand impressions? And how about interior space in comparision with the N-Box?

Soon I started driving, I felt this car is way too heavy for the 52PS NA engine. If I bought one, I would never buy without turbo charger. Except that, The exterior looks good , and interior is not bad. Like you mentioned, the sound insulation is decent. And this car has plenty of room especially above my head (even you I guess. the inside height is 55mm higher than N-box.)

Sugoi! Thank you. I'm interested in tall-wagon kei car, which i can probably also drive with my height (2.00m). I'm wondering about the long term durability and reliability of turbo charged 0.66L three cylinder engines still. Did drivers in Japan have any concerns or problems with Daihatsu/Honda/Suzuki turbocharged kei car engines, or are they running just same as the naturally aspirated kei car engines?

Generally speaking, if you own a kei car with a turbo charger, you need to change oil frequently like every 3,000km. Surely a turbo charger engine have more parts than a NA one so the chances of causing any trouble is little bit higher. but at the same time you can drive a turbo charged car at lower rpm compare to NA. So I think ....it's OK.

Probably not. For obscure reasons, key cars aren't a thing that sells well outside Japan. They are rationnal, reliable, costless in their fees. Whatever, peoples, actually, prefere Kia Sportage and whatever monstrous Mazda throw on the market. Daihatsu actually left my home market years ago. With that, the only Kei Car alternative left the market.

Looks like all kei cars are made by one manufacturer and just rebranded. They are all almost identical.

That's because the regulations for them are so strict, there's only so much you can do, hence the similar styles.
