Hopefully will be able to travel on this line end of June after lockdown finishes.

Why are there yellow AWS magnets on a branch which is completely unsignalled and the reductions in speed mandated by the PSR signs are so small? Are the AWS magnets there to ensure driver vigilance? What's the balancing speed of a Class 150 DMU on a 1:40 rising gradient (eg Hemerdon Bank eastbound)?

I wouldn't say it's completely unsignalled, it's worked by no-signaller token and one-train working with staff overseen by Liskeard Signal Box. But I know what you mean, there aren't any worked signals on the branch. There are however a series of stop boards. A stop board is a signal danger. You must carry out the instructions on the stop board before passing it. This is vitally important. Drivers must obey stop boards. Accidents and incidents will happen if they don't. This being the case, as is standard, stop boards are, where necessary, preceded by fixed distant boards warning of the need to stop ahead and carry out the instructions. As is standard, these are fitted with AWS to draw the driver's attention to the fixed distant and warn them of the need to stop at the stop board ahead. This is entirely standard and clearly necessary. AWS is also, as standard, fitted on the approach to warning boards for open level crossings (these crossings have no barriers, gates or road warning lights at all) and automatic crossings which are locally monitored by the driver (these have road warning lights and some have barriers while some do not). It is clearly necessary to be warned of the approach to an open crossing and to slow down appropriately. It is also necessary to be warned of the approach to locally monitored level crossings and to slow down appropriately as the driver is responsible for ensuring the correct operation of the crossing (road lights and barriers where provided) which is indicated to the driver by a driver's white light on approach to the crossing which should be flashing. No indications that the crossing is defective are provided to the signaller; those indications are provided to the driver (no white light or a red light (steady or flashing)). I did not see any small PSR signs. The small speed signs you may be referring to are the standard design of sign on approach to open crossings and AOCLs (automatic open crossings locally monitored - this type of locally monitored crossing does have road lights but no barriers). These are not true changes in permissible speed, but instead advise of the speed that applies between the board and the level crossing.

Brill video :) Any clue what the signs that look like Scottish flags mean? Not seen those ones before.

It means 'Acknowledge and disregard.' Basically for the AWS magnets. For one direction they are warning, but in the other direction they are not suppressed and can disregard the warning. When that is the case, we have the 'Scottish flag' sign. Temporary signs are black x on a yellow background.
