My wife and I drove our Mini Minor out there and a short distance on the old rail bed in the 1970s. This was after the original track had been pulled up.. Could not believe how muddy and dead that the King River looked beside us? I still look at the old pictures? I have only ever been up the West Coast a few times, but always remember it.. Never been on the train though? It all looked a lot different then.. The old rail bed soon got too rough (and the wet potholes too deep) for the Mini, (The same Mini, that I drove to see a lot of the Bell Bay line as it was built)? Then we returned to Strahan and then back to Queenstown, on our honeymoon.. Thanks for another great view of the tracks in Tassie.. I Really appreciate it, as I doubt that we will ever get up that way again?

@@robinmathews2446 sounds like the mini done a lot of hard miles, fun miles though. 👍 Glad you enjoyed the ride down the line, both now and years ago. 😀😀👍

I frequently had to stay in Strahan for work. Bob Williams was the Marine Board of Hobart Strahan slipway master. Bob and his lovely (name I just cannot remember apologies), wife would ask me for tea after jobs done. Bob had been a fettler (ganger) before 1963 on the Abt and explained in detail how important to pack and keep the rail head at a heights (surface) relative to the root of the rack, 4 -1/4 inch?, otherwise the loco cogs would not mesh properly and if too high lift the engine if it went beyond allowable floating tolerance of cogs bottoming out. From around (about 1993) the kitchen table the couple told me of their wedding day when bride and her father (station master at one of the stations Dubbil Barril??) had to Kalamazoo (gangers hand trolley) to Strahan to meet the groom and wedding partyin her wedding dress..year?...Something right out of 'Petticoat Junction'!

@@rsinclair6560 interesting story and not many weddings would include a trolley ride. 😀👍

Where does the rack portion start?
@driver667Күн бұрын
The rack from this direction starts from Dubbil Barril and runs through Rinadeena to Halls Creek. The section from Lower Landing to Rinadeena is not open to passengers at this stage as track work is being performed on this section. A video coming up on this channel in the near future will start from the Queenstown end and run through to Rinadeena showing the portion of the rack that is running passengers at this point in time. You can find a map of the line at this address: wcwr.com.au/the-route/
