Never had a Cooper but two classic Minis a 1968 1000 and 1970 1100 Clubman. So much fun in my younger days. Both were ten years old when I owned them with usual things to fix!
@charliecroker61994 жыл бұрын
I think .......but I maybe wrong You have the plastic window slider locks the early Minis had silver chrome slider locks My first mini was a 1962 850 export model it had Cooper trim ie Cooper seats chrome round the front windows and the window screen dash top had a black PVC covering basically it was all Cooper trim but the grill was the standard 850s After spending the first 2 years of its life in South Africa it was imported back to the UK in 1964 and in those days it way given a 1964 reg no ALV334B This model did have the metal window locks I loved this car after the fitting of a straight through exhaust it sounded a treat and with the rear windows open on the latch it was incredible. I spent a load of money on this car with Taurus tuning head and cam Wheels etc It looked like a Cooper but it wasn't and the onset of Ford Anglia,s with 1600 cc engines fitted it struggled to keep up .....So I then purchased a 1966 Austin 1257 s I kept it for a year but sadly it was an hydroelastic model and just didn't have the same handling ........I want my youth back ....those were the days

@@PetrolPed I am a 52 year old and I feel 16 when I see these old true Minis. lots of memories because I used to own minis and build 1275GT engines on them. so fun! it seems that the road is coming to you and not the opposite! so simple suspension yet so glued to the road. petrol smell from behined the speedometer due to webber carbs !!! so funnn. pitty I dont own one at the moment. thanks

@@charlesdebattista7432 I’ve never posted before , but, I’m 68 and I have the fortunate privilege to have smelt one of the ex Works Monte Carlo Minis . It was one of the recce cars that was used to make Ice notes and belonged to a guy in Poynton Cheshire . They have an aroma of petrol brake dust and coolant . Quite unique. I used to go road Rallying and was involved in stage Rallying .No other car has ever smelt the same . The S that I navigated in had that smell too, it too had 1340 s engine 45 DCOE with a box let into the bulkhead , the mandatory twin tanks and DS11 pads no carpets and an LSD which led to the driver having to fight the thing in a straight line . Magic cars and so quick down narrow Welsh lanes . 😊

In 1970 whilst working at a BMC Garage I was asked to be Co Driver in a Ex Works BMC Mini Cooper S, the garage owned, it didn’t have Twin Fuel Tanks as all Works Minis weren’t fitted with Twin Tanks and was an Optional Extra on road cars.
@kimberleylouiseprance445Ай бұрын
The other option rather than the 2 fuel tanks was the larger size single tank, which I had in mine however some drivers preferred the balance of the twin tanks.

I saw the Halda on the dash which instantly transported me back to my Dad's 63 Mini Cooper which he rallied in the '60s. He used to put a bit of clear plastic tube on the switches, extending them and making it easier to zero the dials. Haven't thought about that for ages! And the noise in the video is faithful. Fabulous.

Thank you .. I had at the age of 19 for three years a 1968 Morris Mini Cooper 998 (short reach) and that was in 1974, same colour as the one in the video, added Dunlop alloys wheels and a black light bar with Cibies.... Just BRILLIANT. This video brought back so many memories and sounds. Finally sold it and bought a 1972 Opel Mantra 1900A, Had great fun in that too BUT NOTHING LIKE THE COOPER. Just wish I had kept it. Now drive a VW Beach Buggy with an Impreza engine (all year round as live on a small island in the Indian Ocean) ,that brings back in part the same experiences as the Cooper , BUT still would like my old Cooper for the shear experiences of cornering .

I remember watching Paddy Hopkirk on BBC Grandstand TV, I remember the choke, my first car was an Escort Mk2, no power assisted steering, no disc brakes, no NCAP rating, no rear seat belts, 4 speed gearbox and did I have fun in that car, learnt to drive in a Mk1 Ford Cortina which had a bench front seat and a steering column change. We used to be able to modify the cars buying fog and spot lamps, electronic ignition to fix on to the spark generator, buying a cassette radio and putting extra speakers in, buying Cosmic wheels and spacers and wheel arch extensions. Those were the days. I have to say I got to drive an Infiniti QX70 which had 5.5L V8 and the noise from that was amazing as was hearing the Vettel edition which was tuned even further.

The Mini has always been my favourite car since I was a kid.In 1987, I built a ' 1275 Cooper S Rally ' car from an unused Mk3 shell converting it back to ' 65 spec. Hydrolastic suspension with rally s/absorbers.I even cut out of solid brass in the correct script my name ' Coleman 'instead of Cooper on the boot lid and chrome-plated it !.It was utter magic and turned heads everywhere but hard to believe then the specialist insurance company would not maintain its agreed value annually when it was valued at £2000 !.In a moment of madness I sold it and it was subsequently written off by a young new owner.I am determined to have another Mk1 Mini before I'm done - in my opinion the most classless & perfect piece of automotive design ever.Love classis Fords as well but I still think the Mini wins as you feel so proud to be driving one !.

Always wanted a mini after a mate had an 850cc about 30 yrs ago, back when you could get a Mini for around £100. When I sat in his I couldnt use the sun visor as it already blocked part of my view when it was up, we went on the motor once got it to 80 and the thing was rattling and shaking like crazy, one day he overtightened the bolt hold the top bar/engine mount to the engine and sheared it of, the engine rocked like crazy every gear change, he was to tight to get it fixed and the engine rocking bent the carb etc with hitting the bulkhead, he sold it for £50 and got a Fiat 127 lol, I dont think theres many Mini parts you could get for £50 these days, if only we knew back then.

Fond memories. Not mentioned here is that Paddy and Rauno both drove in separate Morris Cooper S's (1275cc) for BMC (Australia)Team in the famous Bathurst race in 1966. There were around 16 privateers also running in S's what was then, a 500 miles race. Many marques in five categories competed. Paddy and co-driver Brian Foley had a DNF experiencing probs at 28 laps (131 total). Rauno with co pilot Bob Holden finished outright winners with the S's filling the top nine placings. Some very famous names amongst those other car's drivers. I believe it was the same year, or very soon after, that BMC Team competed in the Australian Rally which was a leg of the then WRC. I recall that on a section near my home on NSW South Coast Paddy lost a rear wheel but continued for around two miles before replacement could be done.

What a car what a sound! You could tell it just wanted to go and how cool was your mate, just sat there happily while you threw his pride and joy about. Seemed very content to share his pride and joy. Loved this video. Absolutely brilliant content Ped, please keep it coming. And thank you Ellis for sharing, too man!

You did an amazing job in conveying the mini experience. That transmission whine takes me right back! What a happy car. I'm straight off to the classifieds.

Loved seeing you driving the Mini, I have a Mini Marcos Full race with not only gears and drop gear but diff gears are straight cut the sound is unbelievable on the road, people stop and stare I know they think omg that’s knackered that poor car, then the twin Webber’s take over. 😂 I can’t wait for better weather to take her out on the road again. Thanks again for the video, Ps hope you are happy with the new car, my GP3 won’t be here till June now they say. 😉

We had a 1969 mini traveller. Dad was 6’1” and fitted with ease. Just the rally seats and wheel that’s made that tight. Would have this in the blink of an eye. You can keep Ruby 👍🏻 I had a “Paddy Hopkirk” Anorak from Fred Hartley’s car shop in 1973.

The comment that the Mini's would have been coming in to challenge Ford Escorts in 1964 period is not actually correct. The Escort wasn't even launched until 1967 and had it's successes in the late 60s and early 70s. The Mini's of the early 60s were taking over from the Austin Healey 3 litre rear wheel drive sports cars... an even more spectacular clash of designs! Mini's and Escorts certainly rallied together later on... and still do in classic events.

That was great, thanks to the owner also! One of the first cars I drove was a 1275gt back in the early 90's, wow, this brought back some memories! :-)
