Geneva is the second-most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich) and the most populous city of Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Situated in the south west of the country, where the Rhône exits Lake Geneva, it is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva.
The city of Geneva (ville de Genève) had a population of 203,951 in 2020 (Jan. estimate)[5] within its small municipal territory of 16 km2 (6 sq mi),[6] but the Canton of Geneva (the city and its closest Swiss suburbs and exurbs) had a population of 504,128 (Jan. 2020 estimate)[5] over 246 km2 (95 sq mi),[6] and together with the suburbs and exurbs located in the canton of Vaud and in the French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie the cross-border Geneva metropolitan area as officially defined by Eurostat,[7] which extends over 2,292 km2 (885 sq mi),[8] had a population of 1,044,766 in Jan. 2020 (Swiss estimates and French census).[9]
Since 2013, the Canton of Geneva, the Nyon District (in the canton of Vaud), and the Pôle métropolitain du Genevois français (literally 'Metropolitan hub of the French Genevan territory'), this last one a federation of eight French intercommunal councils, have formed Grand Genève ("Greater Geneva"), a Local Grouping of Transnational Cooperation (GLCT in French, a public entity under Swiss law) in charge of organizing cooperation within the cross-border metropolitan area of Geneva (in particular metropolitan transports).[10] The Grand Genève GLCT extends over 1,996 km2 (771 sq mi)[11] and had a population of 1,037,407 in Jan. 2020 (Swiss estimates and French census), 58.4% of them living on Swiss territory, and 41.6% on French territory.[12]
La Suisse, en forme longue la Confédération suisse5, est un pays d'Europe centrale et, selon certaines définitions, de l'Ouest, formé de 26 cantons6, avec Berne pour capitale de facto.
La Suisse est bordée par l'Allemagne au nord, l'Autriche et le Liechtenstein à l'est-nord-est, l'Italie au sud et au sud-est et la France à l'ouest. C'est un pays sans littoral, dont le Rhin constitue l’unique accès direct à la mer, sécurisé par des traités internationaux7. La superficie de la Suisse est de 41 285 km2. Elle est géographiquement divisée entre les Alpes, le Plateau suisse et le Jura. Les Alpes occupent 60 % du territoire8. La population de la Suisse dépasse les 8,5 millions d'habitants, concentrés principalement sur le Plateau, là où se trouvent les plus grandes agglomérations et centres économiques : Zurich, Genève, Bâle et Lausanne. Toutes accueillent des organisations internationales et, pour les trois premières, un aéroport international. Zurich et Genève sont même des villes mondiales.
La Fête nationale suisse célèbre chaque 1er août la fondation de la Confédération suisse, traditionnellement datée à début août 1291. Le pays a une longue tradition de neutralité politique et militaire et n'a rejoint les Nations unies qu'en 2002. Il poursuit cependant une politique étrangère active et s'implique fréquemment dans des processus de construction de la paix autour du monde9. La Suisse est aussi le berceau du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge ; elle abrite en outre de nombreuses organisations internationales, dont le deuxième plus grand siège de l'ONU après celui de New York : l'Office des Nations unies à Genève ainsi que le siège de la Banque des règlements internationaux à Bâle, le siège de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé à Pregny-Chambésy dans le canton de Genève et le siège du Comité international olympique à Lausanne. Dans le domaine européen, elle est un des membres fondateurs de l'Association européenne de libre-échange, et membre de l'espace Schengen, mais pas de l'Union européenne ni de l'Espace économique européen.
