Ibadan, capital city of Oyo state, Nigeria, located on seven hills (average elevation 700 feet [200 metres]) about 100 miles (160 km) from the Atlantic coast. It is one of the most populous cities in the country.
Ibadan’s beginnings are shrouded in mystery; they were recorded only in oral tradition. It is said that the earliest group of settlers at Ibadan were fugitives from justice who were expelled from nearby villages. This small group later swelled with the arrival of immigrants from all over Yorubaland (now western Nigeria).
Recorded history begins in 1829, after the region was convulsed by extended intertribal wars. In that year the victorious armies of the Ife, Ijebu, and Oyo kingdoms camped at Ibadan and formed the nucleus of the modern city. The British colonial government assumed control of the city in 1893. After the railway arrived from Lagos (1901), the line was extended northward to Kano (1912), thus ensuring the city’s continuing economic importance.
The economic activities of Ibadan include agriculture, commerce, handicrafts, manufacturing, and service industries. Although the city’s farming population has declined, it is still large for an urban area. Many cultivators are part-time farmers who augment their earnings with other work.
Ibadan is an important commercial centre. Virtually every street and corner in the traditional core and the inner suburbs of the city is a market square or stall. Within the city there are many markets. The largest daily market stretches in a belt from the railway station in the west to the centre of the city and is Ibadan’s commercial core.
Some local crafts still flourish. These include weaving, spinning and dyeing, pottery making, and blacksmithing. The adire (“tie-dye”) cloth dyed locally in large pots of indigo is popular. The small businesses in the city engage in corn milling, leather working, wood and steel furniture making, printing, photography, hotel management, and motor and other repairing. There are, however, few modern manufacturing industries.
Ibadan is well served by roads. The city has a fleet of privately owned taxicabs and minibuses, and regular bus services are operated within the city and its suburbs.
The University of Ibadan (1948) and a technical institute are located in the city, and there are many specialized institutions. The university library maintains the largest collection of books in the country. There is also a branch of the National Archives on the university campus.
Of the city’s parks, the most important is Agodi Park and Gardens. There are also zoological and botanical gardens, two main stadiums, and a large number of athletic facilities. Pop. (2007 est.) 2,628,000; (2016 est.) urban agglom., 3,160,000.
Oyo, state, western Nigeria. Oyo was reduced in size when Osun state was created out of its eastern portion in 1991. Oyo is bounded by the states of Kwara on the north, Osun on the east, and Ogun on the south and by the Republic of Benin on the west. Oyo state is traversed by the Yoruba Hills in the north. The state has some tropical rain forest in the south around Ibadan, the state capital, but is covered mostly by a “derived” savanna that is largely the result of clearing and burning the former forest cover to provide land for cultivation. The Ogun is the most important river. Oyo state is inhabited mainly by the Yoruba people.
The economy of Oyo is based chiefly on agriculture and handicrafts. Agricultural products include yams, corn (maize), cassava (manioc), beans, millet, plantains, tobacco, cacao, palm oil and palm kernels, cotton, kola nuts, indigo, and fruits. The state is also noted for its cottage industries, consisting of cotton spinning, weaving, dyeing, leatherworking (sheep and goat skins), wood carving, and mat making. Industries in Ibadan, the second largest city in Nigeria, include a cannery, a brewery, a publishing industry, a tobacco-processing factory, wood- and steel-furniture factory, and a motor-vehicle assembly plant. Ibadan is the site of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, and the Federal Agricultural Research Institute. Among the state’s tourist attractions are the Ibadan University Zoo, the Agodi Zoological Garden, and the residential palaces of Yoruba rulers in Oyo and Ogbomosho. There is a university at Ibadan and a number of teacher-training colleges. The Lagos-Ibadan highway links the northern and southern parts of the state. Pop. (2006) 5,591,589.

Nice one @ Videomap: However, it appears your Okada man is not too familiar with the modern areas of Ibadan like Dugbe, Jericho, Onireke, UI, Bodija etc. Hence he avoided taking you there. I'll suggest you take another trip to those area to have a comprehensive view of the other side of Ibadan. Mostly good roads in Ibadan, so should be fun. I love the city; I'm from there😃

I wonder if you have ever passed the Lagos-Ibadan expressway tollgate if this is your definition of a great city. This is just a vision of a glorified slum! Our leaders continue to short change us in the provision of infrastructure. I grew up in Ibadan and have now traveled the world and seen how places have moved on. Ibadan still looks like a shithole! Just like most other places in Nigeria while our leaders loot our resources to help develop Dubai.

Excellent video and it's really great to see Ibadah developing to a great and beautiful city it ought to be. Great job 👍. Having said that, let me make some corrections on what your Bike Man said about Muslim marriage. 1. Nikkah is the actual and major action in Islamic marriage. Nikkah is an occasion whereby both families and friends gather, the groom present the listed of items he was required to buy, pay the Dowry of the Lady and the father of the lady hands over her Daughter to the groom and follows by entertainment. That's the main marriage in Islam. 2. In Islam, the maximum number of marriage is 4. Nothing more. But to marry more than one wife in Islam, there are certain conditions that must be fulfilled. (a) The man must have financial capabilities to take proper care of the Wives and their Children. (b) He must be able to satisfy their material and emotional needs. (c) He must practice equality among the wives, ie whatever you buy for one wife must be bought for others. (d) There must be no favouritism, partiality or partisan when it comes to taking care of them and their Children. (ẹ) Be fare, just, and fair to all. These conditions are very critical when marrying more than one wife. Failure to meet these conditions means one isn't 'matured' enough to go into it. 3. If he already marries more than one and can't meet up with their needs, the women has the right to file for divorce in Islam. Instead of staying and suffering, they can file for a divorce and go their separate ways.

In Yoruba culture you have to respect the king. Its not a matter of choice. Asking question of respect shows you don't know about the culture :)
