Morning drive at sunrise from the Mumbai Airport (BOM) into downtown Mumbai, passing popular neighborhoods and landmarks like Worli, Antilia, Back Bay, Churchgate, Chhtrapati Shivaji Terminus Square, Lower Parel, etc. Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is a densely populated city on India’s west coast. A financial center, it's India's largest city. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India stone arch, built by the British Raj in 1924. Offshore, nearby Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The city's also famous as the heart of the Bollywood film industry. ― Google
Mumbai is the financial, commercial, and the entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow, generating 6.16% of India's GDP, and accounting for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust and JNPT), and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy. Mumbai has the eighth-highest number of billionaires of any city in the world, and Mumbai's billionaires had the highest average wealth of any city in the world in 2008. The city houses important financial institutions and the corporate headquarters of numerous Indian companies and multinational corporations. It is also home to some of India's premier scientific and nuclear institutes. The city is also home to Bollywood and Marathi cinema industries. Mumbai's business opportunities attract migrants from all over India.
Mumbai (also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. According to the United Nations, as of 2018, Mumbai is the second-most populous city in India after Delhi and the eighth-most populous city in the world with a population of roughly 2 crore (20 million). As per the Indian government population census of 2011, Mumbai was the most populous city in India with an estimated city proper population of 1.25 crore (12.5 million) living under the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Mumbai is the centre of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the sixth most populous metropolitan area in the world with a population of over 2.3 crore (23 million). Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2008, Mumbai was named an alpha world city. It has the highest number of millionaires and billionaires among all cities in India. Mumbai is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Elephanta Caves, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and the city's distinctive ensemble of Victorian and Art Deco buildings designed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The seven islands that constitute Mumbai were earlier home to communities of Marathi language speaking Koli people. For centuries, the seven islands of Bombay were under the control of successive indigenous rulers before being ceded to the Portuguese Empire, and subsequently to the East India Company in 1661, through the dowry of Catherine Braganza when she was married off to Charles II of England. During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterised by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India's independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital.

At 0:05, you can see the 27-story $2 billion Mumbai mansion named Antillia, estimated to be the world's second-most expensive property after the Buckingham Palace. It is stunning to see in person! Antilia may be the most extravagant house ever made. The skyscraper-mansion is one of world's largest and most elaborate private homes, at 27 stories, 173 metres (568 ft) tall, over 37,000 square metres (400,000 sq ft), and with amenities such as three helipads, air traffic control, a 168-car garage, a ballroom, 9 high speed elevators, a 50-seat theatre, terrace gardens, swimming pool, spa, health centre, a temple, and a snow room that spits out snowflakes from the walls. www.architecturaldigest.in/content/mukesh-ambani-antilia-home-mumbai/ allthatsinteresting.com/antilia-the-worlds-most-extravagant-house en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antilia_(building)

One rare thing in Mumbai is straight roads
@hadhamalnam
@hadhamalnam Жыл бұрын
The positive about it is that people are actually alert when driving, and roads arent restricted to cars going at like 50 mph, instead bikes and pedestrians also have a higher status. In America, unless there is a bike lane, streets are really dangerous for bikers and just in general not pedestrian or biker friendly. The con is of course that driving is much slower, but imo thats kind of worth to have a better environment for people walking and biking around their neighborhood.

Great vistas. What is even more impressive is that India has completely eliminated extreme poverty in several states, which allow funds to be invested in further improving the ease of living of urban citizens. Even in traditionally mass poverty areas, the extreme poverty rate has come down to less than 20% now. The aspirational districts program has truly improved the most backward districts of India. India is producing millionaires at a very high rate - a good indicator that things are going in the right direction. And as hundreds of millionaires get added, they would all want to live in nice homes and drive nice cars and own nice amenities. Urban living in India should only get better and better. Nice!

And its happening now with clean roads, good traffic management & from some parts especially from Sea-Link Mumbai's skyline looks similar to dubai or Chicago. There is still some problems related to traffic congestion & crowd management but its lot better compared to 20 yrs ago. With mumbai still developing fast in next 20 yrs it will be on par with major cities like Tokyo, NYC & Shanghai.
