Apparently, some scammers now skip this entire spiel and instead call stores directly. They pretend to be from Google and tell employees that there is a "technical issue" with Google Play gift cards. To "fix this", they have to scan all the cards at the registers and tell "Google" the codes... How do I know? I saw a sign warning cashiers(!) about this scam in a local supermarket.
