Hi Jim. Skunks are the culprit that digs up yellow jackets. That looked like a very big hive. I'm glad the skunk got them before the yellow jackets got you or the horses. Even the horses can't out run them. Thank you for sharing your videos with us. 🇺🇸
@edwarnock98843 жыл бұрын
Yellow jacket and hornets nest are the favorite food of black bear, skunks, racoons, possum, ect,. We have tons of yellow jacket in the west as they thrive in dry climate and provide a huge protein source for all types of omnivores. I used to hunt with hounds for bear, racoon, and fox in the Sierras, as well as herd cattle on horse back. stepping on a yellow jacket nest was a common occurrence and finding nest dug out was even more common.

Yellow Jackets often nest under ground. That was a very large nest. I don't know if you have badgers or black bears, but either one of those would smell the nest and dig them up. Also raccoons or skunks would dig them up as well. Good video! That was some fast picking right at first!

I love how your horses respond to you. I remember a farm when I was a kid who used a team of mules and a wagon with wood wheels to open up his corn fields. He shucked the corn by hand using one of those picks the slips on your hand and the metal part in your palm. They responded to his voice commands and he just walked with them. That's been a long time ago (50s) and I'm reminded of it when I watch your horses.

Well you just taught an old dog a new trick. I never thought about a loose evener being the reason I had issues with getting my horses to stand when I was working them. I was working on a loose evener most of the time when I was doing field work with my ponies. When they were hitched to a buggy or carriage, they always stood like a rock, but I guess having a pole was the difference. Never too old to learn something new.
@gregholl50113 жыл бұрын
I used a steel stone boat a lot without a pole. Think of a big sheet of boiler plate 1 end curled up with 2 holes to hook the chain on. If it goes faster than the horses it runs up on the chain which brakes it. I hauled lots of hay and silage with this.
@gavintrousdale75853 жыл бұрын
my first guess about what dug up the yellow jacket nest ( at least in my area ) would be a skunk, or armoadilla . Don't know what kind of critters you have in your area that would do this. But just be glad they did. I ran over two nest ,very close together, once with a lawn mower. needless to say they were mad at me and my mower. It's headlights were swollen together for about three days. not to mention my condition. ,
@kswaynes75693 жыл бұрын
Jim, you are a very cautious teamster, you set a very good example to other newer/new or want to be teamsters. It was common practice to harrow with a loose evener, rare to have seen a forecart used. My Grandma would use a sulky plow but my Mom and Grandpa preferred the walking plow, Mom said it kept her warm plowing in East Michigan's November weather. Most of my early horse drawn experience came from my Mom. Coyote, bear possibly a raccoon dug up that bees nest.

Hey Jim I had the same thing at my place regarding the yellow jacket nest in the ground.where I live we have black bears the nest was in and around the roots of a tree I had taken down in a section of new pasture.I don’t know of anything else that would dig like that to eat bees except a bear. There are coyotes.cougars are seen occasionally but I don’t know if they would do that.a badger might do that we don’t see them in this neck of the woods.

The Belgian seemed like she was side straining all the time,with the other two pulling it over ..it appeared he/she was pulling n straining to keep balance at same time,and was doing all the work in lead . Is there issues with the horses in muddy ,wet fields:for example mud fever ?
@hokeepokee81023 жыл бұрын
Have so many questions about this! So awesome to see by the way compared to modern farming harvesting with horses (at least with corn anyway) soil moisture seems to no be as much of an issue. So question you Belgian mare seems to having issues with the the footing then I noticed when she stepped i. The ditch with the horses she seems ok. Does the height of the team attached to the pole affect the horse that is not attached to the pole?

Wasps not bees. How to distinguish: Wasps build their nests horizontal, bees vertical. Bees store honey, wasps make no honey at all.

@@martintijdgat6269 I know the difference. Just a country girl and it's just the way we talk. Doesn't make it right I know but habits are hard to break. Not sure if it was really a bee hive you found there, in my neighborhood we had a few wasp nests that got removed by authorities (not sure what the wasps are called exactly), but the remains that didn't get taken away by humans ended up being scavenged by animals that eat the larva. So I assume birds or such found the opened up nest that the adults abandoned and started rummaging around for some snacks. ^^

Hi all from here in Aus land . Yea intresting clip Jim , corn looks good , not shore what happen to bees , Jim a question do you clip your fields before winter snow comes , because when the snow melts in the spring videos the grass is short , or because it freezes over it gets burnt off , we don't get snow were we are so don't know what it like to work in snow ok thanks to all say hi to you girls
@kimfleury3 жыл бұрын
The freeze doesn't burn off stalks or tall grass in my region, slightly southwest of where Jim is. Farmers around here usually plow the leftovers under before the first hard frost. Can't speak for Jim, though.
@billstarr93963 жыл бұрын
Hi Brenda and Jim. That was definitely a bear that dug up the underground bee's nest. This is not uncommon for a bear to do as they are out to load on the pounds before going into hibernation. When I operated one of New York's fire towers in the Adirondacks we had telephone lines strung in the woods to bring a telephone circuit up the mountains to each fire tower. The telephone circuit would vibrate from the harmonics in the wire and many a 12 foot tall telephone pole would be ripped up and knocked down by bears thinking an active bee's nest was in the pole.

I have a question. It appeared that the tongue pole for the scoot had the smaller diameter on the front end where it is not as strong. Why not reverse it? Or would the extra weight of the tongue wear on the horses? I realize it would be heavier for you to lift when hitching the horses up. Would it last any longer enough to be worth the extra trouble lifting?
