Driving in Small Town Grantsville, MD Along the National Road Near the Casselman River

Beautiful countryside of western Maryland! Been to Garrett County long ago. Love the Cassell milk truck and the red lit-up barn! I grew up in Montgomery County, MD, West (edit of direction) of the Chesapeake Bay and, as you leave Washington, DC, North on Georgia Ave. or New Hampshire Ave. would take you into Montgomery County to Ashton/Sandy Spring where we still own the family home after more than sixty-five years. During the Civil War of 1812 Dolly Madison grabbed all of the paintings and artwork in the White House, and along with her husband, President James Madison, took all of the contents of the White House up Georgia Ave. to the little farm town of Olney, MD, where everything was hidden in a tavern known as The Olney Inn. The confederacy burnt the White House to the ground shortly thereafter. After the White House was rebuilt, the Madisons returned all of the paintings, statuary, and other works of art back to the White House. Sadly, the Olney Inn was a victim of arson in the mid 1970's. Fourth generation set fire to it for the insurance, destroying so much history and antiques, furnishings, and artwork along with the Inn. While growing up, our family loved to go summer camping in Western Maryland to Swallow Falls State Park and Herrington Manor. Wasn't crowded with tourists back in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it is a tourist trap and very busy --- packed with visitors/campers now. As always, THANK YOU for sharing the beautiful back roads of this great country we call the United States of America!

I didn't know that about the Madisons! And that is so sad about the Olney Inn! Greed has taken so much from our country! I will have to go see what Swallow Falls State Park looks like, for it to draw so many. Thank you for sharing and for your appreciation! @@along-the-way THANK YOU for the wonderful videos! The Olney Inn was truly a great loss to our community. It had been there throughout the 1800s. You have to take a gentle hike downhill to Swallow Falls. It is surrounded by towering centuries-old Hemlock trees. Well worth the visit! If you put it on your channel, it will bring back many wonderful childhood memories for me!
