This slightly incorrect, if you still have a UK paper driving licence (as I had because I'm old !) you do need an IDP. If you have a plastic photo driving licence then you don't need an IDP. I changed mine to a plastic because this very issue.

International licences not needed in EU don't try that rule if you are a Brit, they will sting you for fun, I know a guy who was fined 40k plus and his new range rover taken in off him

Really? As I understand it, if you hold a valid UK licence (paper or card) then you’re good to go. I’ve been looking it up this afternoon as I’m taking my car to Spain and Portugal in June and I hold a paper licence. I’ll add that I’ve never had an issue hiring cars in the past with it, the last time being in Portugal in May last year.

I hired a car in Mallorca in 2002,just using my full uk driving licence, Had no problems what so ever.Drove from The north right down to Palma passed plenty of police no problems.

The UK Driving Licence is accepted in a vast number of countries for tourists. I have used the UK licence in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Philippines normally for up to 30 days, but each country's rules are different, info is normally available on the internet for countries you are visiting. However if you are a resident you will need to obtain a driving licence for the country of residence, normally complete required documentation and they will convert your UK licence to the country of residence. For the countries listed above I did not require an international driving permit. But it's advisable to obtain as it is addition proofs.

So we had to come back to England to look after my mother in law and now we have to drive back to Spain in our UK plated vehicle, were Spanish resident's,so we face a fine if stopped?

Yes undo, get a Bulgarian Romanian to drive it for you they don't get touched see lots to them driving UK vehicles all over EU country it's ironic

You cannot drive EU DL for longer than 12 months in the UK . Even before Brexit . Why should they allow keeping British licence in Spain indefinitely.

That's doesn't count for third countries. If you travel to Vietnam for instance you need a international drivers license even when there drivers license doesn't mean they can drive and know the traffic rules.

Can I drive from uk to Spain, then go on holiday there? Got friends in Gran Canaria and want to spend a few weeks or a month down there.

If you want to “drive” from the UK to Spain, you can take the Eurostar to France and the drive into Spain. Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands though which is next to Africa / Morocco so if your still wanting to drive there with your car from Spain you’d have to either get a Ferry
