what is it like to live in such a place? How's your daily life compared to life in a big city for example? It would be very interesting to know
@ChiliM4n3 жыл бұрын
@@motherfucc Honestly I live on the outside of a city. It‘s not a massive city, but has around 100k habitants. The good thing is that if I drive 10 minutes in one direction, I am in the city centre. If I drive 10 minutes in the other direction, I‘m in complete farmlands and nature. That‘s one of the best things about switzerland. But in terms of living…there‘s both upsides and downsides both ways. If you live out in the nature, it‘s just better for your mental health. The air is fresh, there‘s animals, beautiful landscapes etc. If you want to go for a jog, the forest is at your doorstep. Everyone loves nature, but there‘s a lot of things missing when you‘re in the land. There‘s just not that many activities. Especially in Winter. The city offers tons of activities. Whenever you need to buy something or see a doctor or whatever, you‘re muuuuch better covered in the city. Public Transport obviously being much better too. But everything is so crammed in cities. You don’t have space. I think it‘s best to have both. To live not too far off the city, but still have some landscapes, rivers, lakes or forests near you. Switzerland has a problem of too many people leaving farms and moving to cities too.

@@tommymas1 All men in Switzerland have to do national service in the military and potentially serve their country if a crisis were to occur. Women in Switzerland have always been exempt from this. This is why men only had the right to vote until 1971.
@blokeabouttown24904 жыл бұрын
@@tommymas1 Historically in most western countries men were expected to serve and put their lives at risk, it was their duty to the state. Therefore the state gave them the privilege to vote. This was also the case in the USA before female suffrage was introduced in the USA. There were valid are reasons why men had the right to vote before women did. If you want to talk about sexism, then why don't women in the USA have to register for selective service? Why only men? Why aren't women's groups and feminists campaigning for equal rights to be conscripted along side men?
@blokeabouttown24904 жыл бұрын
@@tommymas1 You are the one that alleged sexism hence my example of selective service. The question is what history books are you reading? The reason why men were given the right to vote in most European countries was because of their requirement to fight in wars. Your example of women serving in the military is invalid. Women were never REQUIRED to serve like men were, and this was the primary basis upon which common men gained the right to vote. Before then only men who were landowners could vote. The burden of conscription meant that the privilege of suffrage was extended to the ordinary working class man. Much later women were granted the same right to suffrage but without having to make the same sacrifice as men.This was the case in Switzerland as it was in most of Europe.

Some people live their whole lives in flat terrain and never seen anything bigger than a small hill. I grew up in Connecticut and didn't see mountains until I drove through the White Mountains in New Hampshire when I was 24 years old (and these are small mountains compared to the alps). The sheer size and scale of a mountain up close is just completely breathtaking if you've never had more than a few kilometers of visibility in any one direction due to buildings and trees getting in the way. It changed my whole perspective on how big this earth actually is.

@Giorno it was one of poorest countries of europe for a very long time. And how was it stable? The cantons had wars with each other for centuries, luckily Napoleon came which led to big changes. It's ascent began during the industralization and also getting safely through the world wars, without destroyed infrastructure. Most from the wealth came from banking...
@RoJoZo4 жыл бұрын
@Giorno Yep, one of the poorest. Sold its sons as mercenaries to many European kingdoms. Had no central Gouvernement, other countries just marched through and fought wars in it ( Russia, France). A lot Swiss emigrated out of it to neighboring counties and later on to the new world. The population was rather small, why should it have been a rich country? There was nothing. As said the wealth came with time after the founding of modern Switzerland and its constitution 1848. I'm Swiss, also verzehl kein seich
@RoJoZo4 жыл бұрын
@Giorno other countries had kings and were centralized. They had bigger population and stronger connections to their country. And things like the colonization of Africa and the Americas (as early as the 15th century) brought prosperity. Or the trade with Asia by sea and land (silk road) and plenty of wars and pillage. Sure Eastern Europe wasn't a big part of that either, but they had great kingdoms. Switzerland was a country of peasants.

Swiss mercenaries used to be an important export till Napoleonic times. At the battle of the Berezina, Swiss soldiers covered the retreat of Napoleons Grande Armée. At the congress of Vienna 1815, Switzerland obliged itself to neutrality, but even after that some Swiss earned their living as mercenaries - a handful even today. Henri Dufour founded the red cross after witnessing the horrors of war at the battle of Solferino 1859. The red cross is also strongly connected to the Geneva convention, which establishes the standards of international law for humanitarian treatment in war.

I'm a Capetonian myself. Have been living in the Northern suburbs for 22 years. I would definitely not say Cape Town is overrated. The Cape Town environs have a different kind of beauty. And the beauty is spread wide across so many divergent activities, places and interests that it becomes difficult to compare. Whenever I do get to go to the popular city spots I'm struck time and again by the many people of multiple different nationalities enjoying the sights and sounds of the Cape. There is so much to see and do that is really fun and memorable that one would be hard-pressed to conclude that Cape Town is overrated.
