typical Gen Z child. At 2:35 your own father calls you a kid and he meant it, so a better title would be "Driving my Father's 1961 Corvair" and then making him fix it after already gifting it to me. Learn to be an adult Rudy. Your brother Rhett is more grown up for goodness sake. You are worse than that watching the watchman kid who is son to Amagansett Press. Another grown child who's parents did everything for him and yet is unwilling to try and make it on his own and be honest about his position. Sounds familiar don't it..

@@randalmartin438 No not mothballs, they use that airfield for training all of the time. Must have had a malfunction and decided it was safer to just park it there than try to fly it back to 29 Palms. And it's public land, you have as much right to drive around as the Marines do. Nothing secret that you would be able to see anyway. There's also an Army base out there, you sometimes see Blackhawks parked here as well.

@@mikebougher3731 when I was a teenager, I had a friend who could back his Corvair into the carport, jack it up, remove the wheel, pull the axle shafts, disconnect everything, drop the engine/tranxaxle, pull it out from under the car, put it on a bench, hook up a gas supply and battery and start and run the engine in 13 minutes flat. I actually timed him with my watch. He was quite good at it. He was r&r them quite often for one reason or another.

My wife and I could pull a 911 engine and transaxle in under 90 minutes. I could pull a VW engine in 30 minutes by myself. The Corvair was a great car by Chevrolet. When I was growing up my mothers car was a 61 Corvair Lakewood station wagon, with 4 on the floor, in the same green color. My father was a former Navy aircraft mechanic so he kept it running great. My sister and I both learned to drive in that car before we bought our own. I still remember the engine oil smell when you turned on the heat.. So.... throughout the sixties once a week mom would put a dollars worth of gas in it...... that was about a quarter to a third of a tank back then and that would last the whole week of errands.. In the early 70's once mom splurged and filled it up. to the top...... on the way home there was a funny metalic boink, boink, boink sound coming from the front...... We finally tracked the sound down by rocking the car in the driveway and it was the brass fuel gauge float boinking off the top of the gas tank.... someplace it had never been for the previous 10 years mom owned it. Lots of good memories watching this.

Hey Rudy you should put a quart of DuraLube oil treatment in the engine it will help to keep the engine running cooler and free up any friction. I swear by it, if you haven't ever used it you will put it in every engine you own. I use it in chainsaws right up to big diesel engines. Just don't put it in an engine that hasn't been broken in yet.

I needed to change the clutch on my Greenbriar van and had never changed a clutch before. I started at 6 PM, and after completing the change I learned there is a right way and a wrong way to put the disk between the pressure plate and the flywheel. I had to change the clutch again using only a floor jack and jack stands to raise the car and lower the engine. In the end, over about 6 hours I removed the engine, changed the clutch, and reinstalled the engine by myself twice. I really enjoyed that 6-door Greenbriar van, which I had installed a 140 HP Corsa engine along the way.

Love the convertables. Knew a girl in the early 70's that had one. We went everywhere in it, no maintenance except maybe an occasional oil change. Never gave problems. I think I put a fan belt on it for her and the top eventually started leaking but back then it didn't matter.

I love Corvairs' too, I've owned two '65 Corsa's. they were dependable, comfortable, fast and beautiful. They were two of the best handling cars I've owned in my 71 years of legal driving. I even modified the second one by removing the 4 carbs and installing a ram inducted manifold with a 650 cfm Holly. It worked perfectly! I'm a diehard Ford guy, but the Corvairs were my favorites. If GM hadn't stopped production, I think they would have surpassed Corvette in popularity.

I had a 65 Corvair Monza 4 speed manul that I pulled out of a field when I was 15 and spent the summer cleaning it up, replacing the clutch, fixing the brakes, and then fixing all the holes in the sheet metal. I then took it to a cheap paint company that painted it for $100. Some coil spring spacers I fit some aluminum uni-lug 14" wheels on it. Biggest issue were failed wheel bearings which on a high school budget were terribly expensive. One side I had to replace the knuckle. My mom was driving it and the clutch cable broke and stranded her in the middle of a intersection. I only ever ran junk yard tires on it. Eventually sold it to someone who was going to make a dune buggy out of it. When my dad and I replaced the clutch, we pulled the engine swapped the clutch and then put the engine back in. Then we found the thrust washer for the pinion bearing on the work bench. So we went to pull the engine back out and found we cross threaded one of the bell housing bolts. So we had to drill that out.

Built an airboat using a Corvair engine back in the late 60's. Had two extra Corvairs and I left them at my parents house in a driveway beside the house. Neighbors complained about them setting there not bothering anybody so my parents got rid of them. It made my Dad so mad that he went and bought a 65' and kept it licensed and inspected just to show the neighbors they were idiots. The airboat was a blast for several years and the Corvair engine never let us down. I didn't have the power of the modern day airboats, but it took us to many places you couldn't get to by other boats or even walking because the shallow water was over mud several feet deep. Miss those days of doing things similar to what you guys are doing all the time!

The third set stopped us dead at 45mph. we both hit the dash and couldn't stop laughing (partially due to the amount of carb cleaner we had been breathing). Then the tow truck that picked us up didn't tie the steering wheel down and the car was whipping side to side for a while. Good times in that Corvair!

In 67 I had 60 Corvair wagon my Dad gave me when I was in the Navy,it was a tough little car lent to a buddy and he brought it back sounding like the muffler had fallen off I checked it and found the canister oil filter was leaking bad and there was no oil on the dipstick I dumped 2qts of STP in it and I quieted down and I drove it until I went overseas and my Dad drove it while I was away and I drove it again when I got back to the states.i finally sold it and bought a 62 Monza it was a good car also, Corvair got a bad rap IMO I never had any handling problems ever in the rain Nice video thanks

Great that dad has tools and spares. Found the problem. An adventure, out of gas. That runs in the family. Had some fun, heading home.

My father bought new a ‘64 Corvair, 4 dr. 4 speed, it was a very nice car for the time, and even today I would like one especially a convertible. The only issue he ever had was if he took it to have the oil changed anywhere other then the dealership it would blow the oil filter off and dump the oil, I do not remember why if it was the incorrect filter or what but it happened 2 different times. The only issue was it could have used A/C but at the time A/C was not a standard issue or as efficient as they are now. It was very affordable at the time and I remember very efficient as far as gas mileage, 25 - 28 mpg regularly.

My dad was always at the golf course and I never was into it that much. I was more of a gearhead. Always envy guys that share a common interest with their dad.

The Corvair is great. I feel the similarly about driving my Sidekick on the Interstate. It will exceed 65 by a small margin, but it really feels more comfortable around 50 - 60. The other cars blasting past can be a bit intimidating. Besides, it's just nice to drive on non interstate roads; there is often more to see.

We have what's called the Shoe Tree near Snohomish Washington. During the summer you can't tell. This time of the year hits, it's solid shoes all over the tree from top to bottom.

Thanks for taking us along on your trip. Those restored Corvairs are beautiful. My personal favorite body style is the ‘65, even though your wagon is “A Beast” for making this trip virtually trouble free. (Except for the running out of gas part.)

Rudy, I mentioned to Matt and now I'll mention it to you. You need to look for a 1960 corvair to get the gas heater and fuel tank out of. '60 was the only year the gas heater was offered but it will provide instant heat in the winter with only a few mpg loss in economy. I know because I had a '60 that I rebuilt when I got out of the Army in '75 and it was fantastic having instant heat in the Utah winter!
