Driving my 1989 Dodge Ram D100 (5-speed Manual)

Since I made a video of my LeBaron, I thought that I would record my other old Chrysler Corporation vehicle. I was given this over the summer. It had been sitting since I believe 2011 and it did not run. It needed some fuel pump work and the seals in the engine were replaced. It also needed a new braking system. It is not perfect, but it is at least reliable. It is certainly eye-catching at the least.
In case you cannot tell, this is the short-bed model. I do not need anything bigger, so I have no complaints. Unlike most of these, this has the 3.92 L V6 instead of the 318. The V6 was essentially the V8 with two cylinders cut off it. For how heavy this truck is, the engine does not produce much power. Because of that, it is quite slow. I almost wish that it had the 5.9 L Cummins, but the V6 is cool because it is uncommon. I do like that it has the manual transmission also. This feels like a totally different animal than a modern pickup truck. My friends love to drive it. It is fun to watch them get behind the wheel of it and try to shift through the gears.
I have the bumper, but I still have yet to bend it. The previous owner jackknifed a trailer and bent the bumper and frame. I bent the frame back, but never got to the bumper. It also backfired and exploded the muffler, so I am currently in the process of sourcing a new one. For having a muffler that peeled like a banana, it is not overly loud. It was fairly noisy with the muffler, but I did not mind because it has no tachometer. Like the LeBaron, my goal is to keep this all stock.

Those are the first generation Dodge Ram pickups & they were produced from 1981 through 1993.

I had a 89 dodge ram 100 as well but my mirrors were different It also had a 5 speed manual transmission all though i rarely used 1st gear (granny) gear 😂 I wish I still had that truck

Sir I have this exact same truck 89d100…I’ve never had a stick shift before and don’t know where to learn the gear pattern. Which way do I shift to put it in reverse after starting? Is it towards me and up?

I had the same truck 3.9 V6 5 speed od but mine was a 1988... I put 249,000 miles on it only changed radiator water pump and fuel pump... Great Truck

Nice old Dodge! But despite the engine size, it certainly seems to get along quite nicely and seems adequate.

Adequate is a good way to put it. I have been at the receiving end of some road rage due to the slow acceleration, but that is not my problem. I am not going to whack it on the floor and abuse the gears every time I accelerate to please people like that. It's not THAT slow. The only time the speed actually becomes difficult is the somewhat rare occasion that I take it on the highway. People usually move out of the way, though. It eventually gets to an acceptable speed. I can definitely see why people most often went with the V8. This truck seems to have been part of a fleet of work trucks judging by the evidence of ladder racks and a number plate on the side of it, so it makes sense that they would go with the bare minimum. My guess is that it was probably a county vehicle. I know my county used to have a bunch of old yellow GMC Sierra things with the square headlights when I was a kid. They all were single cab, bare minimum versions as well. They auctioned them and I still see people driving some of them around town nowadays. I just saw one a couple days ago, in fact. Unfortunately, they replaced a lot of them with Nissan things.

There's a bit of rust above the rear wheels, but you are right in that it is in very good condition for the age.

Do you use it as a daily driving? What is the mpg you get?

I usually drive my LeBaron, but this gets driven fairly regularly too. The gas gauge does not work, so it is hard to get the actual mileage. With a rough calculation, it got about 13.

Where did you get those mirrors?

They are original to it. I have the specification sheet and they ordered it with those mirrors. I guess most dealers opted for the larger and more flashy mirrors, but this was ordered to be a work vehicle. One of the only upgrades it has from the absolute base model was the Ram hood ornament which I thought was an interesting touch.
