What thermostat did you put in? if you put in a 180 it should stay around 180. If youre cooling system is in good shape. (.e. water pump, radiator, cap thermostat and system has no leaks) I wouldn't worry. Your motor wont burn down at 200. My 07 sierra factory setting is 210. Also don't forget that the sending unit and or guage could be not working properly. The guage in my 71 will rise and fall as well as the thermostat opens and closes.

Best thing for me when I was 16 and young was driving the project my dad and I worked on. You don't get any more enjoyment out of something that you personally did with your own hands and those memories you share are there forever even after dad is gone. As a note for Young Chevy Truck your oil pressure will go down as the engine warms up, when oil is warm is it less thick meaning your oil pump doesn't push thick liquid through the oil passages and results in less pressure. Think of trying to push water through a straw versus syrup, which one takes more pressure? The oil pressure also depends on how fast your engine is running, your cam shaft drives your oil pump, so higher the engine RPM means the oil pump spins faster which equals higher oil pressure. The engines compression in the cylinders does not have any effect on oil pressure unless the oil rings on the piston are extremely worn and the truck is pouring blue oily smoke. Hope this is helpful to someone and we all continue to learn more about these great father and son projects and the "sickness" of cars!

Oil pressure will be lower at idle and after it is warmed up as well. The rule of thumb for oil pressure is 10 lbs of pressure for every 1000rpm. If youre within this spec your motor is likely still in good shape. Atleast this was the old adage for SBC back in the day. It might not be 100 percent correct as there are cars out there that have more or less oil pressure per 1k rpm and are designed that way and run just fine. Hope this puts your mind at ease a little.

Hey man just an FYI, the truck doesn’t need to run at 180 all the time. As long as it’s between 170-220 your good. 180-200-210 is perfect operating temperature. Plus they make multiple thermostats for different temperature openings. I beat on my truck constantly, burnouts, 2 step, 7200rpm shifts and it runs at 190 all the time sometimes it’ll peak 205 but that’s still 100% fine. I know you just got it back together and your nervous. I’ve been there, everyone has. But at the end of the day it’s money. You can always fix things. Go out there and have fun. Beat on it, enjoy it

I'm sure someone already told you, but the standard operating temp for a sb chevy is about 210 degrees. the 180 to 200 to 180 is the thermostat closing then re-opening just like it should.... it closes to trap the water in the radiator so it can cool, then re-opens to flow the cooler water into the engine. . . . as far as oil pressure you want 10 lbs, per 1000 rpms. So if you only have 40 lbs of oil pressure, it's only safe to turn the engine 4000 rpm's

Don't stress 180 to 205 you good, thermostat and rad doing it's job. Yes oil pressure will drop when in it gets hot and lower rpm. Old school is 10 pounds for every 1, 000 rpm . You safe. First time I crossed your channel, love to see a Young buck restoring old school. I'm subscribing! Keep it up.
