🚙DRIVING ANXIETY SURVEY 🚙 Friends, I need your help! If you have experienced driving anxiety, I would be so grateful if you could you please spare 10 minutes to fill in my questionnaire forms.gle/i7koDwEGaYy5vmox5 . I'm 25 years old and I am fearful of driving. Although I have my license, I haven't driven by myself for more than 5-10 minutes, and this was just a basic drive around my neighborhood. I feel like a burden whenever I ask for a ride from my family members or boyfriend. I so desperately want to be an independent driver, but I am afraid of driving alone.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 4 жыл бұрын
I love that you say you desperately want to become an independent driver (there's fire and motivation in those words). If you have access to a car, start by doing some very short drives around a quiet neighborhood. Plan out a route beforehand so you feel confident. And decide beforehand whether you would like a (calm) companion in the car with you. You can do this! But take it slow ... and don't compare yourself to other drivers.

Start small...just start with your motivation. Think about why you want this so bad. What would driving open up for you in your life? You don't have to answer that question here, but start to think about these questions. Because at some point you will find the benefits of driving will outweigh your fears. So get ready for it!

I'm the only one in the family who drives so i can't share all these feelings with my family also because they will never let me drive.I just want to enjoy driving and stop feeling anxious about it . Also one more thing, whenever i drive and comeback home ,i rewind all the journey in my mind every single time .This feels so depressing. I got my license at at 16 (I think, I could have been 17) and I loved it. I was anxious when I had my permit, but oddly enough I was fine once I had my license and loved driving. But the last 2 years for me have been really tough mentally. 2021 has been AWFUL for anxiety for me, I can’t drive, I can’t go anywhere alone, stop lights and traffic make me panic and the busy roads trigger a lot of anxiety. It came out of no where, and I feel so depressed and worthless. I just don’t know what to do.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 3 жыл бұрын
I often get asked, ‘why did my anxiety start out of nowhere?’ And it’s true, sometimes it can seem like everything was fine and dandy one minute and then a raging phobia the next. But once you start unpacking the events that led up to the phobia, it’s becomes clear that there were some stressful life events before the anxiety struck out of nowhere. When you’re going through a stressful time, it creates the perfect breeding ground for a phobia to develop. The stressful events could be negative (grief, divorce, bullying at work, illness), neutral, such as a hormonal shift (menopause, adolescence) or positive (planning a wedding, moving home, starting a new job). This is often the explanation when you can’t understand why you suddenly developed a driving anxiety after 2 or even 20 years of enjoying driving. So please be gentle with yourself, 2020 and 2021 have been tough years and I imagine a lot are going through similar situations. If you find it difficult to drive on your own at the moment, so be it, have a partner keep you company. Your worth is not dependent on whether you drive or not!

My driving anxiety started after a panic attack on the highway brought on by thyroiditis. I’ve now had it for a year. I struggle a lot driving more than 10 minutes from my home. Red lights are the worst on busier roads. I find ice packs on my face help a bit. Listening to music helps too. I’m very fortunate in life to say that this has been the hardest time of my life. Driving anxiety has taken a toll on my relationships, my freedom, and my happiness. I try not to let it control me and my family, but with such strong anxiety it’s terribly difficult. I pray someday I will overcome it. I pray for those affected by it as well. It’s certainly no walk in the park.

I think you might be thinking too far ahead and scaring yourself. Take it just one step at a time. First, get in touch with that feeling you talked about of having your own car and not having to rely on public transport. Allow yourself to dream of where you could go or how it could create freedom for you. And make yourself a small, achievable goal. For now, you could just research driving instructors who specialize in helping drivers gain more confidence after a period of not driving.

I have dreamt of driving since I was a little girl. My dad was a great driver and my brother too. When I was 16, my father got brain cancer and my brother moved out. My dad lost most of his motory skills on his right side so he could not drive anymore. I went to driving school and I had a little accident (bumped into a parked car) which sparked my fear of driving. Eventually, I managed to get my driver’s license and drive a couple of times. Then I stopped. I was an ok driver only when I had an exprienced male friend next to me, but incapable of driving on my own. I haven’t driven ever since and it is so frustrating to me. On one hand, it’s almost like I associated driving with my dad’s illness. And then the fear has grown out of proportion and now I even feel anxious on highways. Just the thought of driving with lots of cars speeding around me make me so fearful. I am so sick of relying on public transports or being looked at as someone inferior for not being able to drive despite having a license. I moved to a foreign country 4 years ago and now I’m considering going back to driving school and take my driver’s license all over again. I can’t let this irrational fear win.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear about your driving experiences, but you are not alone with this fear. Everybody's story is different, but the effects are the same (often feeling 'less than' other people who can drive, feeling like a burden to others or over-reliant on public transport). Being in a foreign country might be the perfect opportunity to go back to driving school. Take your time with getting out there on the road again, you can take as many lessons as you like while you get comfortable with driving. You got this!

I think part of the problem is 'on and off'. For you to be able to overcome your nervousness you need to try driving as often as possible, daily is best. Because making a turn will become easier, it will become like second nature, but it will only become that way if we practice often enough. It doesn't have to be a long time everyday - 20-30 minutes if you can manage it.

Even just being in the drivers seat freaks me out. I've grown so used to always riding shot gun that the shift in perspective is jarring. Suddenly all of my surroundings seem completely alien and im consumed in panic. My mind keeps telling me "No this is totally wrong. This isn't right and we need to get out of here right now" I think the first step i have to take is just sitting in the car stationary with no intention of going anywhere until it stops feeling like I've been transported to a whole new dimension. I can't let this fear control my life anymore.

I think your idea of the first step is perfect for you. Sitting in a stationary car, have the music on, get comfortable and just hang out for a while. Making the car feel like a second home will go a long way to helping you feel less anxious

I had a panic attack while driving back in October of 2020. I haven’t been able to drive by myself since then. I occasionally will drive five minutes away from my house but the second I make it to my destination or come home, panic attack occurs. I’m terrified I’m going to pass out while driving is the biggest thing.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 3 жыл бұрын
Having a panic attack is so intensely unpleasant that most people will do anything to avoid having another one. Which is how so many phobias begin. Know this, while having a panic attack, your blood pressure is higher, so you can't pass out. But it's important to focus on slowing down your breath while it passes. I imagine the reason the panic attack occurs once you've gotten to your destination is because you start overthinking what 'could have' happened. The good news is that you have only had this fear for a relatively short time, which means you can overcome this fairly quickly. But only once you are a little less stressed in life in general (most panic attacks occur when we're going through a stressful life event). You don't need another thing to add to your 'to do' list if you're currently going through a hard time.

I remember back to when I first passed and the nervousness I felt when first driving alone. I literally drove for less than 5 minutes and came back to the house exhausted. Your driving doesn't have to be perfect, you can make mistakes. It's a skill we all have to learn, and only practice makes it easier. So be gentle with yourself, ease up on trying to be perfect. Drive little and often so you just get used to it. You passed the test, so you are a safe driver.

For people out there who really wants to know what fear of driving is, I will share my experience here. Fear of driving/ riding is a very emotionally and mentally breaking driving phobia. like most of us I was waiting to pass my driving test to drive and enjoy with friends. I always sat near the driver seat to watch and learn the driving in my childhood . My driving classes and test was not so hard I passed tests so easily with my skills and love for driving . I got my license at 18th and the second week of getting license I drove omni van with my 6 friends from Alappuzha to Vagamon in Kerala, that was my first hill driving experience . The best part is that I was the only one who knows driving among my friends at that time and age . we visited different hilly areas with 18 to 46, hairpins in different cars ,SUVs, Vans and in different climatic conditions like heavy rain , fog , I was the driver for all the trips we had. I was having a very good expertise in night driving also . those were the best part and memorable days of my life. . I also used to ride bike to hilly areas like idukki, munnar , rosemala in Kerala and I also traveled from Kerala to Madurai in my bike . while typing this I am married and we have a 1 year and 6 months old kid and I am almost 30 years old . One day me and my wife went to panchalimedu a tourist spot in Kerala by bike . That was the first time I experience this phobia. I really didn't understand what's going on with me, I cant ride my bike upwards the hill . I stopped my bike and told my wife there is some issue with the bike . Again we continued our trip but again made different stops at different turning of the hill. Finally somehow we reached the destination .All that time I was complaining my bike because I dont know that this is all my mental fault. tThen we visited the area and started to return home. we started to ride the slope downwards but I cant control my bike . I told my wife the bike brake is having some issues. My wife took our backpack and started walking the downhill slopes and turns . Once the hilly road bends and slopes were over I was able to ride with her . returning home also I believed that my bike has some issues my wife also thought the same. After that one day i was travelling with my family in my car . I noticed that driving through bridges and hilly roads was not the same like before . I feel something suddenly when I see a bridge ahead. understanding about the situation I told my wife about my condition . she was shocked to hear that I cant drive like before. Now my friends drive in our trips to hilly areas . My friends also was shocked to hear about my situation . Two weeks before we went to aazhimala temple in TVM . I drove my car with friends, but when there was simple sloppy highway road in TVM I was not able to drive downhill and we all stuck there for like 20 mins . I was not able to descend the no1 highway road. I Cried in that situation with my friends in my car . actually this Place is almost 140 km away from my home I drove that 125 kms an i was not able to drive that 15 kms with height and slope highway road . Then i stopped a passing by person in bike and told him to go slowly in front of my car so I can climb and descend the road. I cried in my car and all my friends were just making me drive like the olden days . Now I am a marketing executive I ride like 1200kms 1 month in my bike for marketing purpose till I face this issue but without riding and driving I cant live . I always take shortcuts without bridges or bypass. still feeling bad and feeling guilty I cant take my wife and son to a hilly destination by driving. This feeling is really killing me but I am fighting Harder to be that old driving expert .

I'm 26 and have a fear of driving. When I started to learn, I was somewhat okay and handled driving well from age 13 to 16 but after that fear hit hard. I think it was mostly because I was panicking and got anxiety when driving with my whole family in the vehicle and my mom was a total backseat driver and by dad would yell back at her then they would get into a raging argument. My dad was calm when teaching it's just my mom always had unhelpful advice. My time driving was not calm at all. And there's a few other things that have happened with me just being a passenger that has made me have anxiety just being in a vehicle. I really want to over come it cause it's affecting my life big time for many years.

Yes, having an actual driving instructor is often preferable because they're not going to get nervous or judgemental. Not saying parents can't teach, it's just there's a lot more tension.

I feel like people never acknowledge that driving is dangerous. The reason I'm afraid is because I literally crashed my first time behind the wheel. The car was stationary, and I was slow, and no one was behind the wheel. But imagine if it was a person there. I could've harmed someone. It is terrifying how much responsibility is in your hands as a driver. The saftey of others relies on you. And you're just supposed to be calm?

Yes, pushing yourself to face the fear is good, but do it a little at a time. And please be gentle with yourself. There's no point beating yourself up about being scared of driving. You'll slowly get there. Figure out your reason for wanting to get over your driving anxiety. That will help you find some motivation. In the meantime try this next video, you might find it helpful too kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqHViXqre9NlnM0

i’m really nervous to drive on the parkway. i have been driving for almost 2 years, and am terrified of the parkway. my number one fear is not being in the right spot and the signs. i will have my maps on of course. i really want to visit my friend who lives 2 hours away. i want to drive on the parkway so bad i’m just so nervous
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 4 жыл бұрын
It's fantastic that you have a goal in mind (to see your friend who lives 2 hrs away). That's the goal - so create a plan to work your way up to that. Practice with quiet roads first (a lot), then eventually work your way up to the parkway. Going further and further during each practice session until you feel comfortable enough to do the big drive. You can do this! And even if you get a little lost you'll cope better than you think you will. There's an affirmation on my blog post here ( www.generationcalm.com/blog/using-driving-affirmations-for-driving-anxiety/ )that you might find helpful. 'Even if I take a wrong turn, I'm exactly where I'm meant to be'.

I always feel anxious before driving . The night before the day of driving makes me sleepless and worried . I'm always filled with negative thoughts .When i'm driving my mind just stops working and i feel so so stressed . I always had a dream since childhood of driving my own car .Now when i have my car , i just become so so so stressed at the time of driving . This all has made me so depressed . I know i drive fine but still there is some sort of fear in my mind . Please help me to get rid of this . Please give me a solution.

One thing that is absolutely essential, will be to get out there and drive ... everyday! 30 minutes a day, if you can, in addition to the normal routine driving you have to do for your family. But it's important to go at your own pace. First, only driving on roads where you feel comfortable. It's important to connect back to your childhood when you longed to have your own car. Think about what it meant to you. Because you achieved it! You passed your test. Now, think about your new goals. What would being able to enjoy driving mean to you? Write it down for yourself. What might you achieve if you could drive wherever you want to? At the moment, the only thing that stands between you and that goal is fear. But you can deal with that, by driving more often until you get used to it. I have an entire driving anxiety playlist with 9 video's kzbin.info/aero/PLlhU5CGlNSZzyEPmTqeeOq0pM8b3vP5Bb. Take your time working through them because you can do this!

Generation Calm Thankyou very much . I also feel the same that i should drive regularly to eliminate my anxiety. Usually i drive once or twice a week but now i'll try to be more regular . And one more thing is that whenever i drive with family members i always want to impress them and then the performance pressure makes me nervous and i tend to do a few mistakes like harsh acceleration or sometimes releasing the cluth quickly making the car stop with a jerk.I always feel stressed about making a mistake.

I suffered the same. You need to acknowledge the loud inner voice that's cautioning you. Tell it that there is no danger and that the loud voice itself will cause the danger. Make a deal with the voice. Tell it you will demonstrate and prove there is no danger and ask it to stay quiet for that particular drive. Once you reach your destination, acknowledge the win. Allow yourself to enjoy the win. Be proud and happy. Have a followup chat with that inner voice afterwards.

Thank you for the video! I'm trying to overcome the anxiety and panic of driving. I already had it when I got my license, but it was getting better as I drove more frequently, I was getting quite confident. After driving alone a few times I was able to go to the town and do what I had to do (with a bit of struggle but I was getting better). Then one day I attempted to drive out of the parking space I was in and ended up scratching the car in front of mine and because I got scared (I wasn't expecting that it was that close) I didn't had enough time to turn the steering wheel to the right position an with that I scratched the car parked in the opposite side of the street. Even though it was just a small scratch in the paint of both cars (I have insurance) It turned out really expensive. Since then I haven't tried to drive again, but the situation keeps getting worse because I don't feel like I am ready to do it but my family keeps pushing me to drive and every time they mention it or tell me to drive to somewhere, I just start panicking to the point that I feel my stomach turning and I almost throw up. I really want to go back to driving, really enjoy it, but I just fear that it will happen once again and it will cost a lot of money to my parents.

I’ve been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when I was 12. It became worse when I was in foster care. It’s absolutely tiring having to go through life with an endless panic. I cannot get anything done without feeling this overwhelming pressure that manages to seep into every corner of my life. I did get my driving license by a miracle, but when I get behind the wheel I feel paralyzed. My hands start to sweat, I feel like my heart will explode out of my chest, and I feel nauseous. I have no one to talk to about this, everyone thinks I’m overreacting and I have no idea how to get through this. I don’t want medication, it’s expensive and exhausting to be on.

Please don't give in to the pressure to 'have to' drive to keep others happy. You'll know when it's the right time for you. If you do it to please other people, your motivation won't be very high. So, wait until you feel ready!

@GenerationCalm

Sorry to hear that you had a difficult lesson. Sometimes it just takes one thing to get us off track and we then lose focus. Ask your instructor if you can pull over and take a moment to compose yourself, slow down your breathing, and remind yourself that you are still learning and that it's ok to make mistakes. Then get back on the road. In the meantime, before your next lesson, don't dwell on the lesson. When you're learning anything, you'll have bad days and good days, but when you look back it's the bad days where you've learned the most.
