My mother-in-law drove this road before it was widened, in a blizzard at night, in a station wagon, following a set of tire tracks that were back and forth from the rock wall to the edge of cliff, and then the tracks she was following disappeared , that's when she got a " little" nervous, she was fearless. I have been over it on a full moon winter night, that was beautiful.

I grew up in Ouray, the town at the north end of this road. My father, and many others did as well, used to drive up almost to the pass most days of the week to the Idarado Mine, which is just short of the summit. I did my driver's test on the section of road at 7:42...drove up from town, turned around (yes, on the area with the cliffs), and drove back to town...the driver's skills test needs to be a LITTLE bit different for someone from these mountains; I didn't learn how to parallel park until I was in my 20s! Where my family is, there also is my heart. My soul, however, remains in those mountains.

I love the beauty of the Rockies after a snow storm or during one. The snow on the pine trees is so beautiful.

I love Colorado. I miss living there so much. Its beautiful year round. Love the snow. But, hated driving in it. Nice scenic video with the snow covered trees and mountains.

When I was about 11 yrs old my family passed through here in the winter time...it was scary as f#!k..we we're in a station wagon w no four wheel drive, no snow tires, no chains...I remember watching cars and trucks pulled over putting chains on and my father driving like a maniac and the car sliding all over the road...I remember going through the tunnel...my parents made a last minute decision to visit my sister in Colorado springs because we were unable to visit my grandmother in the four corners area due to ice and snow. Looking back I'm surprised we all didn't die!

Unless I was out of food and had to get to a grocery store, there would be no way I would attempt that drive. lol Call me a wuss if you want, but I would just stay put. The scenic views in your video are stunning. We have a beautiful country.

Wow, this area of the Rockies looks like the Alps.. The mountains in this area are huge and have a more jagged, soaring appearance to them, similar to the Alps..

Try that at 1am in a blizzard with about 8" of fresh powder and no evidence of a snow plow in sight. Difficult to navigate. I've actually been stranded in Ouray when they closed the pass for snow....in late June.

thanks for sharing I've been down that path 2 years ago.I was there when it was snowing all day and my girlfriend and I went to the hotsprings while it was snowing at the same time.The town reminded me of like one of those towns you see in a snow globe.Very beautiful there.

Just another Colorado mountain pass give it the respect that it needs. Have been across it many times in all season and all kinds of weather, in a two wheel drive car to a Tractor Trailer and the biggest problem I had was the outher idots on the road

i just drove this road and its so pretty in fall its like my brain wouldnt accept what i was seeing as real. the fear of the drop offs and a few spots had cracks in the road combined with the locals big truck tiny weiner syndrome made for a unique experience! question in colorado do you have to prove you have a over inflated ego and measure your weiner (shall not exceed 2 inch) to get a license?

For just a million more, they could have added a guard rail here and there! No shame in calling it "The Two Million Dollar Highway"!
@myroadtours61477 жыл бұрын
It's probably closer to $12 million, a million per mile....depends on who you ask when it comes to the nick name though.

It makes it easier for snow removal.

There are some guard rails where there is enough room. Most of the highway, there isn't room. As well, snow removal would be difficult with guard rails. Respect the road is our motto. :)
@wasatchm2 жыл бұрын
I say put in more guard rails and use a SNOW BLOWER (instead of a snowplow) to blow the snow over the guardrail. so how many miles of steep cliff (with no guardrails) is there between ouray and silverton? is there more steep cliffs with no guardrails going from silverton to durango? I drove that highway at night going from grand junction to durango (in the winter). it's been 10 years so I remember very little. I think I was going 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit all the way through. I don't remember seeing any signs warning of the danger.
