Not many car are considered to have broken the mould, or to have been ground breaking. Well in 1980 Audi launched the Quattro Coupe and that was certainly both. Not only was it powerful and fast...it was the first production car with permanent four wheel drive. When Audi decided to take it rallying to changed motorsport for ever !
Thanks to Audi UK, I have had the privilege of spend a few days with this stunning example from their heritage collection. One of the first Quattros to be delivered in the UK.

Hi. An absolute classic this car. I grew up in the era of watching Group B Quattros tearing up rally stages. Seeing and hearing them howling and chuffing their way through forests at night, lights playing through the trees and dust... good times with my dearly departed dad.

I actually saw them Rallying in the 1980's, I may have seem them on their RAC Rally debut in 81. The most memorable moment was when the RAC Rally visited my home town Wigan. A short wheelbase Group B on a night stage, me in a bush 1m from the cars spitting flames from the exhaust. Totally impossible to forget!

I never read the comments to videos on YT normally but got hooked reading these and enjoying all the memories the quattro brought back for people whether they've owned one or not. I too was first bitten by the quattro bug watching the rallying and at the time I could barely afford to run my 10yr old Cortina. Never thought I would own one but the desire festered. Then 20 yrs ago I went 'all in' to buy a mess of a quattro that I couldn't afford. I restored it over 2 years to enjoy it and still get that same enjoyment every time I fire it up. That 'buzz' never fades. No other classic performance car comes close for me. Great video review. Loved it. 👍

You get it. Driving an Audi from this era is a sensual experience. And we are sensual beings. Unlike cars these days in this stimulation is engineered out of the car. If i was stuck driving one practical classic car forever it would be an 80's Audi. Even the 4 cylinder 4000. At 90 mph on the highway it would really begin to hunker down. The little 4 with the 5 speed would just start to roll up up up and if you didnt watch it you'd be at 5k on the tach just cruising way too fast. A lot of younger drrivers just don't understand why we get so attched until they actually spend some time in these older cars. What great memories.

Peter...as one who was “there” at the time, it is hard to describe how special an Audi...any Audi..was in comparison to other cars. One of my Dad’s friends managed to buy a new Audi Super 90 in 1970 and that seemed from another planet. Then the 100 was a car bought by your Doctor..they were never cars in the A3/A4 Tdi segment..they were always very special indeed. That Quattro was much more impressive to us enthusiasts than any McLaren is today. Then..if you had one, you were rich...very rich...PCP contracts were not even a dream and I like that. Your Quattro today was the road going car so it would feel soft but the later versions and the rally cars were far more wieldy and responsive...and to see one then was magical but beyond the pockets of any spectator. Today I watched JayEmm testing a 1990 Astra GTE 16v and discovering that a car he had simply dismissed or never thought about was in fact “fantastic”...he really loved the basic, involving, pure feel that modern cars no longer have..yes they do 0-60 before you get in them, have paddle shifts, ABS, clever handling, active suspension etc...and an average driver can get in and go fast...but that does not take skill. In an old car, the driver did the paddle shifts by getting it right, knew cadence braking so that was his ABS, learnt about under/oversteer sometimes the hard way and had a vastly more involving drive on roads not inflicted with cameras, speed control engineering, universal disapproval and it many ways it was safer....but then it could be dangerous and knowing THAT difference was the mark of a good driver..called “Harder than average” in period. I often say, how quick would a young Stirling Moss be in a McLaren Senna, AMG GTR Pro, Porsche GT2RS...I think he would be gone before a current driver knew where to look. Peter..thank you...I may never have owned one but today you brought back a host of good memories. I am glad I “was there”...🙂🙂🙂🙂Richard.

Brings me right back....and I miss it ... Your vidz are really filled with soul! I was kind of the odd one out. A scrawny geeky 17 yr old girl obsessed with cars. I would love to go back and drive my celica, scirocco, and esp my 2 subaru XTs again. I would take that over having a run in an exotic car 🚗🌠🤓 yes, that quattro is just perfect. I think cars were more that just that a car, or cool or needed. It was a deeper level of what they represented to us, substantial meaning in our lives. Seeing one, brings us back to different times, hopefully for most, happy times...less complications and worries of today.

Hello 'Mr Petrol Ped', back in 1983 I lived just off J3 of the M5, working away from home I returned on Saturday 19th to find a local company's car park was being used as a RAC Rally Service Area, loads of people/cars/police etc but as I was about to pass the exit a Audi Quattro pulled out driven by Stig Blomquist, I drove alongside the car for some miles on its way to the stage at Sutton Park, really great memories. I later had to explain to my wife why I was late home, she didnt 'get it'. Brilliant car. Regards, RichardA.

Evening Pete, well what can I say ! The sound of the Quattro 5 banger is sweet music indeed, that and the Scooby flat 4 are so iconic and to me the best engine sounds ever. Sadly I don't think any new car in the future will ever have the same impact as the Quattro has had 😭. My first experience of the Quattro was on the RAC Rally in Wales and you could hear it coming through the forests for about 5 minutes before it reached you, simply epic as a rally car and as a road car it was so desirable and I'd sell a kidney to own one now in 2020. Forget all the modern computers and wizardry, stupid bloody heated seats etc, zap me back to the 80s when you manhandled a car through bends and hoped the brakes would do their job when called upon lol. I'm 56 now and I pine for the 80s, my cars the music the fact I was a teen and had no worries no health issues and God damn the girls were so much better back then. Gotta love the 80s car ads too, always a tasty young woman to draw us in 🤣. Who else hates this getting old business lol. Take care all 👍👍👍👍🏁 Great video mate. And apologies to any ladies, if I haven't been PC by saying, tasty young woman. I'm sure some snowflake will be offended 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

There was the Jensen before Audi that had 4wd, but this is the car that truly bought it to the masses. The first time Audi bought it to a rally course, it was used as a chase / photo car. The problem was that had it actually entered, it would have won, not just by a little, but a hell of a lot. Its exactly as he said it. It changed not only rallying, but cars in general and yeah, Ford, Renault and the others that bought around Group B won more races, but the Quattro started it all and to people like me in their late 40's, it still to this day is a dream car. The idea of owning a sport version in red with the white rims is something I will always dream about. So while other blokes like their Porches, Lamborghini's, Astons, McLarens and the like can have their playthings. I just want an Audi Sport thankyou.. just have to save 1/2 million Euros to even start or is that more?

This is why im now driving an older car once again. My A45 has gone, and now driving a 27yr old Saab 9000 Aero 2.3T with 360bhp. Ive replaced the entire suspension, and over 20 bushes. All balljoints etc and now it drives better than my A45 did. With no nagging computers trying to take over everytime you go into a bend too fast. 0-60 in 5.6, and 100 up in 10.5. Its quick, really quick. And yet today on a 3.5hr drive i averaged 40.5mpg. Just a brilliant car. Im never going back to a modern car.

Your reaction once again hit home the reason I refer to EV's as souless tools can you imagine in 40 years people waxing lyrical about the memories of their first nissan leaf ? I have my first quattro Audi at the moment and it's blown me away for spirited road driving it's a real surprise especially after coming from a fiesta ST.

The only distractions I had when driving 40 years ago would have been the young lady with the long legs and short skirt (Hopefully!!) who'd be sat in the passenger seat. But those stories are best left until after the 9pm watershed ;-))... You said that you had a Celica too. But seemed a tad down about it? Why? They were really nice sports cars for the time. I'm sure that a lot, if not all of the drivers you passed whilst in that Quattro, wouldn't have ever seen one before. I wonder how many actually "noticed" it. If I'd seen it, I'd certainly have had a "Wow!" moment :-))... Great memories for the 50 something Peddlers, Pete. Thanks :-))...

Hard to believe the Quattro Coupe came out 40 years ago , it still has a very distinctive design which has aged well and certainly was ground breaking in rallying but i always thought the 1966 Jensen Interceptor FF was the first four wheel drive production car , that 5 cylinder had a lot of character and unique sound , great to hear the sardonic tones of Geoffrey Palmer in the advert ( still with us at 93 ! ) , Audi boldly claimed that the engine was as smooth as a 6 and as economical as a 4 cylinder which was stretching the truth somewhat. I wonder if JLR could lend you an even more pioneering vehicle , the first Range Rover that has just celebrated its 50th anniversary , that would be epic !.

Please keep up great reviews like this. I was lucky enough to own a quattro for over four years from 1987 and it remains the best car I should never have sold. Every journey was an event. Nothing came close to sounding so good. At the time the combination of four proper seats and so much useable performance, it was unbeaten. Four wheel drive, abs, electric windows and mirrors, digital display and even audible voice warnings (although I know many people had that disconnected). Undoubtedly the best looks and that glorious engine. You got used to the big gap in the gear ratios between second and third and the turbo lag. At the time the brakes were good and when most cars had tyres with a profile of 70, the 50 profile fitted to the quattro was pretty state of the art. I recall that the only other production car to have the same size tyre was a Lotus (Esprit?). Living in Somerset it was the perfect car for blasts along the B roads across the Mendip Hills. So many happy memories. Please don't refer to it as an Audi quattro coupe though, it's an Audi quattro, plain and simple!

I agree with you, the Audi quattro Coupe was a different model, this is the Ur quattro. And yes it should be spelt with a lower case “q”. Only the S1 got a capital “Q”. 200 bhp may not sound much today but back then most cars had way less than 100 bhp. Back then cars were a lot lighter too so bhp/ton was probably comparable to most cars today. Good times though

Hi Peter, it‘s great fun seeing you having fun in a car that played such a great role in motor industry. But wasn’t the Jensen FF a four wheel drive car as well? It came out way back in 1966 and I think that‘s a good looker! I would have loved one as a Matchbox back then 😇! Do they have one at Gaydon and can you get them for a drive? At the Moulhouse car museum in France they have a range of about five historic cars every day you can drive on the museum’s circuit. I really enjoyed your Quattro video and I would love to see more reviews about old school cars that played an important role in car manufacturing 👍😀

I chuckled when you gave it some revs and smiled....only a Quattro owner knows that smile and that sound......is got to be the best soundtrack for a vehicle. You got a subscribe from me just from the vid, thank you again

I think lots of things make this car special - Quattro and that 5 cylinder turbo engine - which just brings goosebumps and hairs on the back of my neck out from everybody that sees and hears such an iconic car. There is total admiration for this car and it as you say spawned many cars since. I think the 5 cylinder exhaust/engine note is, just pure evocative and lovely to hear. It made me purchase (several years ago) a Volvo S60R (2.5 5 cylinder turbo with Haldex AWD) as I needed that noise in my life. Nice video as always Pete.

I remember a magazine road test back in 1987 between a red quattro and a GPZ900r across a dark windy moor. Both impossibly desirable machines. I must have thumbed that article hundreds of times as a spotty yoof starting his motoring journey on a TS50 Suzuki.

Thank you, Pete and thank you, Audi. While I drooled over the quattro I couldn't afford one fresh out of Uni. So I bought a 2 year old '86 Scirocco. Lots of similarities in some of the fittings. The squishy rear spoiler, how cool was that?!!

Such a journey, what a privilege being able to drive something where it all started. I also particularly really enjoy the Quattro system as what some might say, I’m an Audi fanboy! Bring on the haters but nothing gives more joy than being to almost throw a car into the corners where it just sticks like glue!! Thanks for content, all the best.

You are making some interesting TV sir! As for myself (I'm also 'built' in 1972) this was a huge icon in my young years. We also forgot how close all the spectators were on the rally circuit. I remember diving in a ditch when a car lost control on the Condroz Rallye. What a car this Quattro still is! Great thanks!

Great video. As already mentioned the Jensen Intercepter FF was the first 4 wheel drive saloon car, but the drive train was heavy and only made sense in a car with a 7litre plus engine. Audi designed a unique and light gearbox so with 2.1 litres and a turbo ( and on later models without turbo) they managed outstanding performance for the era, and still good by today’s standards. I owned one from 1992 to 2000 and I get what you say about parking it and people just showing great love for it. Mine never failed to draw a crowd. Every time I came back to it there were people round it. A true icon of a car. Get Audi to give you a late 20valve though and do a comparison video, over the 12 years of production the development is impressive, developed more during those early years than the 30 years since. If you get a 20 valve promise to take me for a ride though. I would love to be transported back in time to when I had mine. Keep up the good work

I had a black quattro. Non turbo back in 1993 . I was 19 . When you could buy 4 star petrol. It was a 1987 D registration car . Kept it for 10 year's . Still the best car I ever had. The 10 valve engine was amazing. 177000 miles before I had issues. I've never had a car sinse that took me everywhere and just made me love driving. Just found out that it's not been scrapped after putting the registration number in the government tax check but whoever has it has it sorned. Ten years without an MOT . how do I get this car back 🤷

Always find it interesting that my daily runaround that I know is heavier and don’t consider fast in my F56 Cooper has more horses than the Cars I grew up with like the Renault 5 turbos, pug 205 1.9 GTI’s, golfs etc etc that I thought were rocket ships but are slower 0-60. This Audi was at the time the dogs dangly bits and 0-60 is 7.3 sec. My coop is 7.9 sec yet I still consider them in different leagues speed wise. Your Roadster or Clubbie would absolutely destroy this Car but the respect is given in that what it did 40 years ago was so far ahead of its time and it did it so well it was a game changer. A bit like that classic RS Mexico a few months back. I’d pass any new McLaren, Audi, BMW, Merc, Porsche and even Ferrari to look at an original mint RS mk1 Mexico salivating😁 Jumped in a friends Classic MINI the other year and it was the smell, the noise, the vibration at motorway speed that I loved so much I was back in time . 👍 Old Jaguar’s seem to do it better than any other Cars on that fantastic smell probably down to the leather but your instantly transported back in time. We’re the same age so you’ll get that.

I was a kid in 1986 when Henri Toivonen got killed but I for some reason remember the day and where I was that day...Rallye cars were scary dangerous back then with the turbos and all but it was also more exciting. Now it’s all so clinical just like F1..
