Fuel efficiency is also affected by how fast or slow as you drive. Most gasoline powered cars are most efficient around 90km/h (55-ish mph). Driving slower than this uses more fuel for less distance driven, and driving faster also uses more fuel. Also, the more often you have to start again after stopping at a light, also uses more fuel. The longer you can drive 90-ish (55-ish) the better your fuel economy will be. At least that's how I've understood things. Seems to work out, because before covid lockdown, my drive to work would make me fuel up once every 13 to 14 days. During covid lockdown (I am an essential worker), my trip to work was less congested and I got many more green lights, meaning I drove longer without stopping, and I found I was filling up every 14 to 16 days over my 30 minutes drive to work. Now that our lockdown is over, I find I'm back to using more fuel for the same trip, and having to deal with more traffic and lights stopping me. So there's something to this, I suppose.

The thing people often don't realise is that the biggest factor in your travel time is your environmental conditions, not the speed you choose to travel at. Those things include road condition, the speed of traffic, the amount and design of intersections, the weather, traffic lights, stop signs, and so on. On the very buttom of that list is your speed decisions. But, humans being humans, people wanna think that they can beat physics. A trip from a to b is gonna take that much time, nothing much you can do about it. It took about 12 hours to get there and it was exhausting. Now the speed limit is 80. No one to speak of is jockying for position and most of the time you can drive up to about 90 (assuming your vehicle, abilities and the weather are appropriate). Even if you drive 65, your mean speed should be around 50 If you drive faster you could be at 60 (mean) so about one fifth more... This means if you have a 15 min trip, you only gain 3 minutes (one fifth) by driving faster (making it in 12). Therefore it is easier and safer (also stressless coz no ticket LOL) to get out 5 minutes earlier and get to the destination by respecting the maximum speed (posted). Example pretend you drive 50 min fast. If you want to drive stressless, plan 60 min, (one fifth of the time). Naturally a 5 hour trip stressful driving, becomes 6 hours long... easygoing Cheers from Germany

It's not always the case, but driving environment happens. Driving slow = more car passing you. More car passing you = higher chances of car accident involving you or someone around you. This has been observed in multiple studies in the past. More accidents around you = significant delays in travel time. Similarly, slow driving = higher chance of stuck behind other slow/conservative drivers (who btw are also the more dangerous drivers due to higher chance of being bad drivers ie people scared of driving/slow reactions). This translates to getting stuck behind even slower drivers, heavy traffic (reducing speed further), hitting more lights, etc. Again, significant delay in travel time. So sure, the math says you don't save much time, but in practice the many different factors often do result in significant time saved. The only scenario of speeding that leads to longer travel time are tickets, which in my experience happens less them everything above. Avoiding all the other garbage is a big reason to drive faster. Also, it allows you to stop hating life momentarily as well. For example, I once missed a major highway block fur to a light pole thing falling down unto the highway by~3-5 minutes. Speeding and saving 3 minutes saved hours of being stuck with nowhere to go, or even potentially being involved in a deadly accident. After heading back 2 hours after the incident, I was able to still see the other side of the highway literally not moving as fire trucks blocked the entire highway working to get rid of the pole.

Thing is, many people seem to miss the reason why people speed (especially those who don't usually speed). Most people don't drive at a hogher speed because it will get them somewhere faster. They drive the speed that is comfortable to drive all conditions considered. For the experienced driver driving is a mostly subconscious task, they don't sit and actively think of every decision they need to make, and speed control is part of that. I live in a less populated area and most of my driving happen on what is essentially the countryside (at least by american standards), and I often end up driving 10 - 15 mph over the speed limit because that's what I find comfortable for most roads and that lets me fully focus on the road and not have to glance at the speedometer all the time. And that's why putting stricter speed restrictions and higher fines doesn't work. You need to design the road for the speed you want.

On a short drive, freeway or not, speeding is pointless.. If however you need to do big miles between major cities, like I need to do from time to time, and you travel at night, you can significantly increase your fuel economy and shorten the time.. The best I've done from my house to my mum's place (690km away) is exactly 6 hours 30 minutes. Left home at 9:40pm arrived at 4:10am, no stops, bugger all traffic, and only 25 minutes of slow, non-motorway roads.. Average speed was 118kph. Sticking to only the speed limit for that same drive adds a full hour and 20 minutes to that time. As for fuel economy on cruise down the highway, my car gets on average 7lt per 100ks, or about 14ks per litre, which would be around 50mpg if I spoke in 'freedom units'. Doesn't take a genius to get that traffic engineers aren't the boogeyman trying to fuck you over on your commute, they work very hard to make roads function as efficiently as possible while still being acceptably safe, those rules are there to maintain those conditions (e.g. traffic lights are almost always timed to the speed limit, for obvious reasons and to convince thick-skulled people to maybe not speed all the time) and you thinking you just must know it better is about as smart as breaking into the cockpit of an airliner to put the engines into takeoff thrust because "it'll get us there so much faster", yes it will but it will also significantly increase the amount of pieces we're likely to arrive in
@yearginclarke9 ай бұрын
@@justalonelypoteto I totally agree. I drive the speed limits, or slower in the early morning hours to get better MPG's. I leave 15 to 20 minutes early and I'm never, EVER late. I don't understand what the big "hurry" is that the average American seems to be in at all times while driving. Driving fast does absolutely nothing for me personally. Mostly that seems very impatient, selfish and childish to me. If I wanna drive fast I'll play a video game or something, and that doesn't do much for me as well.

So let’s do the math. 6 minutes. Tickets. Potentially lose your drivers license. Higher insurance premiums. Higher fuel consumption. Don’t think 🤔 about the safety factor because accidents happen slow or fast. Either way don’t think 6 minutes is worth paying shit ton of money in the long run.

My daily commute (Europe) is about 15 minutes through winding mountain roads. The spee limit is an average of 50 km/h which is around 30 mph. Being mountains it's a pretty tourist infested area. During tourist season the traffic is horrific. Driving as fast a the road will physically allow me i can make the trip in 11 minutes. If I drive the speed limit I do 20 minutes. When it's summer or winter, the traffic extends this to half an hour. I once chose not to overtake a slow driver (going the speed limit), against my better judgment. I then proceeded to watch this alleged human being let about 6 other vehicles get out in front of him including two coaches and a horse drawn wagon. If I had overtaken him, I would have made it before all those calamities befell us. Speeding doesn't just save you time because you drive faster mit save you time because you get out in front of garbage that always slows you down. Just a traffic waves hit in the morning and the afternoon, leaving 5 minutes earlier isn't equal to 5 minutes of saved commute time. It grows exponentially with rush hour intensity. Leaving 5 minutes before rush hour save you 15 minutes. Driving 20 mph faster can save you more than just that speed difference.

I live in Ontario cottage country. All the city folk come from southern Ontario and travel up north and drive 65 km/ph on 80 km/ph roads. Causes people to get aggressive and make dangerous manoeuvres to pass said slow drivers. Yes, people drive 95 in 80 zones but cops don't care. Please at least drive the speed limit or expect people to drive aggressively around you
@trowwzers50574 жыл бұрын
80km is pretty slow tbh. If you drove that in Michigan, everyone would be passing you up In up north michigan, the speed limit is 65mph (105kmph) and people tend to go 75mph (120kmph). The limit on freeways is 75 and people go 90mph (150kmph) normally. People from the southern part of the state tend to drive way faster than the locals.

Say you speed 10mph over limit and it saves you 20min a day times 5 days a week is an hour an 40min. Times 4 weeks. Over 6 and a half hours. Times 12 months thats over 80 hours your wasting! Simple math! Stop wasting 80hours every year going slow!
@yearginclarke9 ай бұрын
But in the context of one day, 20 minutes isn't a hell of alot of time. Not to me anyway. I can't see how 20 extra minutes is realistically gonna do much of anything for me. I'll take the better MPG's and potentially less wear and tear on my tires and overall vehicle any day.
@GEAUXFRUGAL3 жыл бұрын
Why not do this 60 mph vs 80 mph. 30 minutes . A mile a minute, @60mph. 20 miles more for a full hour. 30 minutes is ½ of an hour or 10 miles or 10 minutes difference in 30 minutes if you could get free of the butt sniffers.
@gzlpete3 жыл бұрын
As by your description, your not very good with math. Even worse your situations were not comparable. You need to compare the same route, at the same time, on the same day of the week. Also in the same direction. Out one way and back the other are just not at all comparable.
