Footage of driving through the new road that is being constructed where it was previously destroyed by the Cumbre Vieja eruption in late 2021 that destroyed more than 3,000 buildings in La Palma. As of filming this, the road connecting Los Llanos to the southeast side of the island is only open for a short time 3 times per day to allow traffic through in a convoy. There are several parts of the route that are marked as "hot zones" where you can feel the heat from the lava as you drive past it.

Thanks for showing us what's going on in LaPalma. When the volcano erupted, everyone showed it, but now almost no one does. I live for this island because I love it so much. I thought it was strange that I flew to the same island 5 times from Northern Europe (Lithuania). However, I was very happy to read the comments that there are people who have traveled here 7-10 times.

I remember when some people were asking "why don't they just build up some earthen walls to guide the lava out to sea?" This video shows in scale just how massive an area it actually covered. The Earth does what it wants to do. Thank you for the video.

Thanks for this vid of the long drive through the Cumbre Vieja lava fields. Gives a detailed perspective of how much land was covered by this long eruption, and a sense of the devastation to people's livelihoods and homes. Give credit to the construction crews too who made a passable road out of hardened rock so sharp as to puncture tires and lacerate boots in seconds. The effort to blast and jackhammer that is formidable. Not to mention having to cool the hot spots.

Thank you for filming this There has been no coverage of the island since the eruption stopped.. like the island and people were just abandoned by outsiders once the show was over. What a great and very difficult job that the road builders are doing. And everyone else in the area affected must be struggling to clear just the ash still, and the poor people who have lost their homes and belongings and towns and livelihoods and animals and land, they have still lost everything. It's not like they can get any of it back from under the lava. Thank you for reminding people of their plight. But the road opening must bring some hope.

Suitable audio, thank you. Have to drive slowly to protect and respect the new road. Hopefully they will widen but that makes ppl drive too fast. Poor road surfaces help keep speed and dust down. Won't be growing much on this for awhile. Thus, perfect for housing in danger areas... only on high points. To be expected on an ective volcano. Good for holiday homes only.

Houses destroyed, banana plantations gone...after driving through this area, whe had the plan to visit the coast town of Puerto Naos. Just stay on the roads and paths DO NOT TRY TO climb on the lava even if there are no signs that forbid it. It's very unstable at the rocks are sharp. You could cause a rockslide and fall down. Or fall into a hot spot that are still there even 1 year after the eruption. You could go to Tazacorte, and from their it's only a 30 minute walk south to reach the lava stream and abandoned banana plantations. (some are already starting to regrow! At some point you won;t be able to go further because of the construction crews that are working grinding down the new rocks into gravel and sand and preparing for a new final road they build (I could pass them because it was a free holiday and nobody was working. But otherwise I think you can only pass some parts in a car and are not allowed to walk. You can also come from the south and go up north, and see it from a different side. One day, it rained and you could see the massive amounts of water vapor going up from the rock that is still pretty hot below the surface in some places. (again, DO NOT climb the rocks on your own)

With so much destruction of property to people's homes, it's impossible to comprehend the amount of lava that was pumped out continuously! it takes decades to become good farming land.. You can see other lava streams on the island from 30 or 70 years ago, that are still basically wastelands, with only a few grasses and small shrubs growing there.. but humans can speed up the process by grinding down the lava rock into gravel and dust, maybe they will do that at some key spots. they are already doing it right now, to make new roads , but they could also do it for the bananas

The entire island of La Palma is an active volcanic area since it emerged from the bottom of the sea, about 2 million years ago. The island has suffered at least 7 eruptions in different places since the Spanish conquered and settled in this place, and many more without a doubt in previous times. There is not a single inch of the island that does not involve some risk. It is something that palmeros have assumed.

@@MT-ys6ju , well, the previous eruption occurred in 1971 (Teneguía). Before, in 1949 (San Juan). People still live who witnessed both. Let's say that it is something that canaries have learned to live with, even if it turns out to be catastrophic. We must not forget that it is precisely these eruptions that have created the Archipelago. It is something that happens in other areas (Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Central America, Hawaii, etc). Volcanism provides extraordinarily fertile land, suitable for agriculture, but exacts a price for it. In any case, I am happy to see the island slowly recovering. Hopefully the influx of tourists will help improve their economic situation. We must also thank the European Union and the Government of Spain for the funds provided to repair the disaster. Kind regards, friend.

With all the caution being expressed about walking on the Fagradalsfjall lava on Iceland, It is curious that the crews here are able to clear the material to cut a new road. I recall seeing vintage footage of crews on Etna at the Crateri Silvestri clearing recent lava flow to restore the rest stop there. I took note of the fact that deeper material was still glowing. Duly noted is the comment that there remain 'hot zones' along the roadside visualized here. Of additional interest would be the status of the coastline at sealevel, in particular, the plantation area which was destroyed.

There is a difference, having been at all locations and belonging to one. If it would be a matter of importance to clear a road to make transport between towns and villages doable, as is the fact in La Palma and Sicily, then we in Iceland would do exactly the same. But it would be stupid to do so in the middle of nowhere, far enough from towns and villages, like Fagradalsfjall is, just to please some tourists. And since the craters are ever shifting to new locations, it would be useless if not dangerous. But when needed Icelanders take real action and were the first in the world to save almost a whole town and an important harbor location as early as 1973. www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/boris/mirror/mirrored_html/Heimaey.html#:~:text=In%20mid%2DMarch%2C%20a%20broad,high%20mobility%20of%20this%20flow.

I walked on that new build road last week (first week of January 2023) , they have scientific measuring points every 100 meters or more if needed, checking the temperature inside rocks and for gasses. At one place I could still see the heat shimmering above the rocks and it felt considerable warmer. The normal temperature was around 22C but there it felt like 30. And the bigger layers of rock are still hot inside

When I saw the at first the Video of when La Palma Volcano was active I Saw only what was in the footage But today when I decided to Look at the Aftermath and saw what looked like Hundreds of Miles of Lava I truly felt Numb. I have Lived a life totally free of Disaster and can't even imagine how Traumatic it must have been for every Man woman and Child to be Faced with Homelessness , and to loose their livelihood; These things Happen and nothing can be done; There is no Lessons to be learned {if you Can Call it nature } there is nothing one can do; I don't suppose there are any Tourist these days or maybe there is , if so Maybe I could find on where there is Accommodation.

hey, it does look like a lot but its certainly not 100s of miles. It probably stretches for about 5k-8km in each direction. And yeah now that it's been more than a year, tourism is getting back to normal here again. I live here and have seen how many tourists were here during the summer. there is a shortage of holiday properties due to the volcano destroying some, and the tourist town of Puerto Naos is still blocked off due to toxic gasses, and some residents are forced to live in holiday homes while they wait for assistance. but there are still quite a few places available to rent on Airbnb.

Qué total devastación. Míralo desarrollarse todos los días desde el día 1 hasta que se detuvo gracias a (Bushcraft Bear) que vive allí. Fue terrible. muy buen video.

If they put concrete over it they can build something there. But of course keep in mind the tide and the strength of the deposit!

That was a large area and thankfully there were not many deaths...except a man had a heart attack. Not 100% sure of the deaths.

It looks pretty much like a ghost town there. Does anyone still live on the island 🏝️? That's insane!
@exploring.europe
@exploring.europe 2 жыл бұрын
yeah this was only covering a small part of the island really. there are 81,000 people living on the island. everyone living in the destruction zone had to abandon their homes and I believe they are being re-homed elsewhere on the island

Only part of the island was affected. Life went on normally pretty much everywhere else. Look at the maps of the lava flows.

We call this destruction but that is only from a humans perspective. It is actually a renewal and rebuilding of land that will in time be fertile and support many plants and species.

Would have been better with just the original audio, if no private conversations were happening or similar. The soundtrack puts up irrelevant artificial moods, and the removal of the original audio is information loss.

Yeah there was conversation happening. I could record the trip again with the audio but all you would really hear is the sound of 4x4s driving in 1st gear and idle work machines while the workers have their lunch break
