Shelby: Gateway to the Northern Rockies
Shelby, a city nestled in the heart of Toole County, Montana, stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the American West. With a rich history rooted in the railroad, Shelby has evolved into a vibrant community that serves as the county seat of Toole County. As of the 2020 census, the city is home to 3,169 proud residents, each contributing to the tapestry of this remarkable town.
A Storied Past
Shelby owes its name to Peter O. Shelby, the General Manager of the Montana Central Railway. This designation came about in 1892 when a pivotal railway station was established, marking the junction of the Great Northern Railway and the Great Falls & Canada Railway. It was a convergence that would shape the destiny of this town.
One of the most remarkable events in Shelby's history occurred on July 4, 1923, when it hosted a legendary heavyweight boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons. This bout, contending for the undisputed world Heavyweight boxing championship title, drew global attention and etched itself into the annals of Shelby's history, albeit at a significant financial cost to the town.
In more recent times, Shelby's compassion and care for animals made headlines with the establishment of Camp Collie in the early 2000s. This camp played a crucial role in rehabilitating mistreated dogs, showcasing the town's dedication to the well-being of its four-legged inhabitants.
Welker Farms and the Well Done Foundation
Welker Farms, an agricultural enterprise renowned for its influential presence on social media, stands as a testament to Shelby's agricultural heritage. Situated near the town, it represents a fusion of modern farming practices with a strong online community.
Additionally, the Well Done Foundation, which focuses on plugging orphaned and abandoned oil wells, opened a visitors' center in Shelby in 2020. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also fosters a culture of responsible resource management.
Geographical Splendor
Shelby's geographical location is nothing short of picturesque. Situated at the crossroads of Interstate 15 and U.S. Route 2, and nestled near the Marias River and Aloe Lake, the city is surrounded by natural beauty.
Weathering the Seasons
Shelby experiences four distinct seasons in an arid climate. While the winters are long and severe, spring breathes life back into the town from March to May. Summers, although occasionally dry and hot, come with the risk of lightning, hail, and severe thunderstorms. Fall, on the other hand, can be unpredictable, with temperatures sometimes lingering in the 60s °F (10s °C) until the end of November.
Demographic Diversity
As of the 2010 census, Shelby was home to 3,376 people. The city boasts a diverse community, with 89.5% identifying as White, 6.5% as Native American, and smaller percentages representing various ethnic backgrounds. The average household size is 2.17, and the median age is 40.3 years.
Education Hub
Shelby Public Schools play a vital role in the education of the city's youth, offering comprehensive programs from kindergarten through 12th grade. The high school, proudly named the Coyotes, embodies the spirit of Shelby.
The Toole County Library complements the educational landscape by providing access to a wealth of knowledge for residents of all ages.
Connecting Communities
Shelby serves as a vital transportation hub, with its Amtrak station offering daily connections to cities both east and west. This includes the Empire Builder route, linking Chicago to Seattle and Portland, Oregon.
Moreover, the Northern Transit Interlocal system facilitates local bus transportation, enabling residents to access neighboring cities like Great Falls and Kalispell with ease.
Noteworthy Sons and Daughters
Shelby has birthed and nurtured several notable individuals. James Grady, acclaimed author and political commentator, honed his talents in this very town. Renowned paleontologist Jack Horner, Larry Krystkowiak, a former NBA player and coach, and esteemed scientist Leroy Hood all have roots deeply embedded in Shelby's soil.
As Shelby continues to grow and evolve, it remains a testament to the pioneering spirit that has defined the American West. With its rich history, stunning natural surroundings, and a community bound by shared values, Shelby stands as a gateway to the Northern Rockies, welcoming all who are fortunate enough to call it home.
