Trieste (Italian; Slovenian/Croatian Trst , German Triest , Latin Tergeste ) is a port city in the far north-eastern corner of Italy with approx. 211,184 (2001) inhabitants. The city is located close to the border with Slovenia and is the capital of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and of the province of Trieste .Trieste was part of Austria-Hungary in the period 1867-1918 and was the dual monarchy's most important port, but also a center for literature and music .
Today, Trieste is a border town and the population is an ethnic mix of the surrounding regions [ citation needed ] . The dominant local dialect is called triestin ("triestian" - pronounced /triɛs'tin/ , in Italian triestino ). In the city, this dialect and Italian are used , while in the suburbs and the surrounding area Slovenian is spoken . Both Italian and Slovenian are equal and considered to be the language of the area, but there is also a small proportion of German speakers in the area.
The economy is based on the port and trade with the surrounding regions. During the Cold War, Trieste was relegated to a marginal position, but is now rebuilding itself.
