When I was a teenager we made this drive from Long Beach to Mammoth Lakes just about every weekend in the wintertime. We bought a condo right on the corner of Minaret Rd and Main St and made good use of it every weekend to go skiing. Being in Mammoth and skiing the mountain was joy enough; but the trip up was equally enthralling. The geographic and geologic changes on the way up were stark; I've always loved the eastern Sierra and those imposing peaks standing firm against the clouds. Gorgeous; what a privilege it was to make that drive; 6 hours never seemed that long when there was so much to look at and so much different terrain to drive on.

With the price of gas , lift tickets , restaurants , and especially what the real estate property costs or short term rentals , now in 2022 , you'd have to be pretty well off financially to do the simple things WE got to do in our youth. My Dad took me and my brother to Rams and Lakers games when we were kids. No way can the average family afford those luxuries these days . 100 bucks just to PARK your car at the new stadium . UGH !

Usually twice a year my wife and I ride from Sacramento to the coast and Hwy 1. We sightsee our way to Ventura, and then out to Mojave. Shortly after, we connect to Hwy 395 before cutting through the mountains on our way back to the Sacramento Valley on a pass of our choice around Lake Tahoe. This frenzied video captures just one of the reasons why this is the favorite of our tours each year.

When in California, follow the California vehicle code. Left lane is for faster traffic, right lane is for slower traffic. You should pass only on the left, since the left lane is for faster traffic.

Nice job...what a beautiful stretch of hwy. It is so cool out there and I want to go back and shoot some vid of the lava caves I saw on the way from Idaho to Ca. I didn't recognize your stretch, but it's all good. Around the Maheaur ? River is really a cool section to see volcanic geology and lake burst if you will from ancient lakes. That is one of the most interesting geological areas on this hwy. I can't wait to go back there with a drone and shoot some videography. Thanks...you inspire me! To the people? that criticized this vid... get out there, you will maybe be happier people than you are now. It is amazing. Good luck!

Indeed the 395 is a speed trap, sadly I got a speeding ticket on the 395 north up In termo ca about 45 miles before alturas. I honestly think I was spotted by an aircraft! I keep telling everyone to be careful in the 395

Ahh - I was assuming a still camera! so you recorded hours of footage, at normal speed / quality, then just grabbed a frame per second? I have a Delkin Devices mount but I find it shakes a lot. Did you do anything to address windshield reflection? How about bug splatter - you were lucky that the area of the screen never got 'hit'?

This is absolutely fantastic! Could you tell us how you did this? I've been mounting a camera on my windscreen and trying to do this but without great success. Are you using a special timelapse camera, or tethering to a laptop, etc?

Unfortunately I got a speeding ticket last year in this same highway but mine was up in termo about 45 miles south of alturas and my ticket was $222. I was cited for going 80 mph. I honestly believe that an aircraft spotted me and notified the chp to get me!

PLEASE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING ONLY Keep right except to pass, complete the pass around the left of the slower vehicle, then please return to the right lane. At 7:10 or so of the clip you can see a particularly glaring abuse of fellow motorists, on an uphill grade where the 18-wheelers are only going 35 mph. Driver is clearly blocking other vehicles that want to use the proper lane to pass this video's driver, but they can't use the proper lane because this driver is blocking it. Thanks.
