There is a series within the Drizzt world that is all about the spider Queen (albeit by different authors). I loved these books and Im about 16 books in. With your dislike of older fantasy, its really hard to tell if you will like it or not.

The War of the Spider Queen books are each written by a different author, though overseen by Salvatore, I think. Not sure if this really gives you a perfect taste of Salvatore. Though maybe worth reading, though I found them to lack any emotional soul.

I had the exact same experience back when i read this series. The overarching series really is just the story of drizzt's life more or less from childhood in menzoberranzan to later life which I wont spoil. Some parts of the series can be very intriguing with a ton of depth, and then other times it just feels like a simple adventure story. I will say even if you dont like sojourn, you should at least try out the icewind dale trilogy. Without spoiling anything, that's where drizzt basically finds his found family type of group, and those 5 are the main characters of the series moving forward

War of the Spider Queen is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s a 6 book series, about saving Menzoberranzan.

The drow are one of the coolest races from AD&D so their parts were the most interesting. The other bits were fairly standard. Also, similar to Feist, the books can get to be a little formulaic plotwise.

I read all the Drzzt books (that were out then) when I was younger. I always thought it was weird that Homeland was just so much better than any of the other ones. Not that I didn't like the others, I accepted that they were fun and mindless.

I completely agree. I felt the same after book 2 and I doubt I'll read book 3. Book 2 had way too much action and less of the things the first book had which was mainly plot driven. BTW, according to many reviews, book 3 is even worse so heads up

Funny enough, I own the dark elf trilogy and have never read it. This past year I wrote my 1st novel ever, and it seems to have some noticeable similarities based on your review here. Currently on my 2nd round of revisions before going to beta readers, definitely not going to beat you over the head with boring themes tho. Nonstop action with lots of depth. Going for that lotr level of mythology that will reveal itself throughout the series.

I really enjoyed this trilogy, but it’s one of the first fantasy series I ever read so that could affect my view on it. Considering I read this when I was anywhere from 10-12, I was really surprised that I enjoyed them so much on a recent reread. I do think this is the weakest one of the trilogy. You will get more family drama I think in the last book. 😊

The books are great, I'd advise you to at least give them a try. Matt is known for not really liking older fantasy so as long as you aren't in that same boat, you may really enjoy the Drizzt books.

Exile is my personal favorite of the Drizzt books, simply because he's (obviously) the most compelling character in the whole series, and it's this installment that gives us the deepest insight into his torn psyche. However, the series suffers sharp decline after this book. I DNFd after book 7 because it became insufferably repetitive and generic.

Way more generous then I was. The first one was good, hated this one. They basically just stalled until the final showdown

They aren't grim dark, which is all anyone seems to want to read now when it comes to fantasy. I'm 12 books into this series and they're consistently amazing.

I posted this on your last video but I don't know if you read it so I'll just copy paste. Thanks in advance "I know you don't usually read web novels but If I could recommend you one that I think you would love it would be Lord of the Mysteries, Its not a typical fantasy and it starts off pretty slow but once it gets going, it gets really going. If you don't mind a slow start and love mysteries, great worldbuilding and awesome battles I would check it out, this series is an absolute masterpiece. Just remember that if you do try it, Volume 1 is considered the worst of all of them."

Im gonna catch a lot of flak for this...but id skip icewind dale trilogy. Its not good. I mean...crystal shard is...okay? Streams of silver and halfings gem were unreadable. Just skip to Legacy. It delves back into the drow society and youll be able to grasp what hapened in icewind dale without reading it

Matt i hope you take my advice and skip Icewind dale. You WILL hate it. Its not your thing im almost 100% certain. Legacy is much better. But honestly? If you didnt enjoy exile the rest of the series may not be for you cause i think HomeLand, Exile, and Sojourn are peak drizzt
