Maybe not "so much more" but just "more important" because looks so include skeletal and muscular structure, and general health. All of which you want to find has been given the best chance of being the best by a breeder who has certified breed-appropriate health test information easily available on parents, grandparents, great-grands, great-great grands...

I lost my girl recently, she was like bundle of energy and soft as feather at same time. For a dog only one year old she was so lovely and kind, she was so sweet and caring. But only problem was her aggression towards other dogs and that cost her life, she chased after barking dogs and got hit by a car and died a week after due to internal injuries and pelvis fractures. That's why I am watching this video just to make sure what to check when getting a puppy next time.

I wanted to come and say thank you so much for your video. 2 years ago I watched your video before going to choose my puppy and it totally changed my outlook. I was a “it chose me” picker and I resisted that urge and found the dog with the perfect energy level and personality for my home. My neighbor didn’t watch your video and she ended up with a puppy with much higher energy than she expected. I now refer all my friends and family to this video when I hear they are shopping for a dog. Thank you!!

We chose by looks but got lucky. I would have chosen an outgoing puppy for my kids, but they aren't home very much with him. I'm home with him all day, every day and take him for walks. He's not very food motivated but loves company. The more time you spend with him, the better behaved he is. He's perfectly well behaved with me and a wonderful, laid back companion. He still gets nervous around strangers but loves going for hikes with me during the work day when the trails are empty.

I adopted a Shepherd Ridgeback Mix, and she was a runt, but super shy after being beaten. She was about 7 months and already back in the pound. It took us an hour to get a collar on her. In the cage she was in the corner away from all the others. When we brought her home she was SOO happy! She ran around our yard for a while and she even slept with me in my bed that night without destroying anything! Now she just turned 2, and she is leash trained, she knows the basic commands, she can go off leash in the woods and comes back when we call, she still learning how to swim, and she can do agility on command which is so huge for her! She still is scared of some people, but she is so protective. She's such a good dog! Although the difficulty!

It's so sad that people adopt a puppy because it's cute, not putting time into figuring out the right breed and temperament for them and when it doesn't do exactly what they want they dump it at the pound and get a new one. Those people should be banned from having a dog.

The light green puppy broke my heart. Looks and acts just like my dog did when I first picked her out as a small child. We ended up putting her down after 12 years as she developed a large cancerous tumor in her hip area and was in too much pain to adequately manage. I had other dogs growing up, but she was by far the best dog ever. Loving, loyal and patient, never ever got snippy with me when I was little (6 years old and a little too grabby then). As a teenager she was always at the gate when I got home from school to greet me, followed me everywhere I went. Loved to lay her head in my lap as I was reading through my homework assignments. When my husband and I buy a house so we have room for a dog, that's the personality I'm going to be looking for.

When I currently have no dogs and I get a puppy, I always choose one that is independent and assertive enough that it can take a training and leadership role with future dogs. I once adopted a mature dog with a dog I had for a couple years and raise from a pup. I let my dog pick his new buddy, not me. One of the many dogs we had met even tried to piss on him at the shelter! That was an obvious bad match!

Hey, Dr. Nichol, great idea to have a video for this! We know there are unfortunate mismatches. ---- We have a special issue, up here in Oregon. Hah! We became old. We are preparing to say good-bye to our 4th Golden Retriever. All four (Mac, Clementine, Lorelei and Ollie) have been absolutely fantastic. We trained our dogs but they definitely taught us a lot too. We're pretty skilled with Goldens. Nobody deserves so much fun! All 4 dogs have been unbelievably great! one after the other. BUT: We don't think we can do justice to a Golden puppy. They're a lot of work for the first 18 months. So we're looking at other options.... Maybe we need to start with an older dog... -- Anyway, our 4th, Ollie (8), is the picture of health but he's 2 months post-op after successful surgery for Hemangiosarcoma and we know this wonderful return to "normalcy" can't last. We're going to lose him, soon, we are told, but, so far, so good! ---- My wife and I know, we're happier with a dog. Judy is 64 and I'm 74. I have always run and jumped with all 4 dogs but my lower legs stopped holding me up (Neuro problems). I can hardly walk Ollie around the dog park now. Judy does that but she gets sore knees. ----- We're actually looking at miniature Goldens (not sure). We're also looking at something called "English Cream" Goldens. We hear they're more subdued. Any ideas for us?

I don’t own a dog, but do have a cat. Didn’t get a dog because frankly I knew it wouldn’t be fair on the dog since I’m a lazy and independent guy. A cat is a much better fit for me even though I love both animals and really want a dog as well. I looked at probably around 150 kittens before I chose my guy. He was absolutely perfect. He came from a large litter (very important in animals because they learn how to socialize better), wasn’t the runt of the litter or the bully. He played when I initiated with him and instantly calmed down when I stopped. He was the most curious out of all the kittens I saw, but also patient. He would observe calmly when other kittens would either lose interest or just try to play. You could tell he was thinking and taking it all in. He was like a ragdoll and likes cuddling up. Not saying this because he’s my pet, but honestly I hit gold with him. He is perfect. By far the smartest cat I’ve met too. He even plays fetch. Taking your time to see a lot of different puppies or kittens is super important. Be patient with it and believe me, the more you look around the better idea you have of normal behavior and the better you get at spotting a special animal or a troubled one. It took me 2 weeks of looking nonstop to find my pet, but it was well worth the effort and patience. Everyone loves him because he’s the best. Don’t just adopt because of cuteness, personally is way more important. If you’re extremely lucky you’ll find an extremely cute puppy or kitten with a personality to match.

Shelters are hard places to figure things out, after a few months at home you can have a completely different dog. There are certain things that stay but positive progressive patient training using the things they offer to your advantage makes it win-win for everyone. It is sad that so many shelters spay/nueter them so early as it creates endocrine issues, some places make you put a down payment and you get it back after the dog gets spayed which helps puppies a great deal. THis is crucial since many dogs are fed commercial foods that are very lacking. Great video it did share a lot of great stuff.

(Although I would definitely look into the breeder, ask about the puppies parents, etc, but I know a lot of the reputable ones will let you look at/play with all the puppies to decide which one you'd like) Good luck finding your new family member! ^-^

there really isn't a bad puppy. they just need to be with the right humans for them.

Very helpful. However, what do you do these days when breeders are overwhelmed with buyers and pups are snapped up within a day’s time simply by the color of the ribbon on their collar or by their gender?

Light green and red ribbon would be so perfect for me, I love them. They are just like my own dog 🥺 The other pups are so energetic, we would definitely struggle to work well together 😅

If your adopting a puppy be sure to buy a snuggle puppy which makes a sound of a heart beating and it also warms up so the puppy will not cry and cuddle with snuggle puppy very comforting for the pup and makes the transition of leaving mom and siblings easier. I took my snuggle puppy with me to pick up the puppy to make sure I got mom's scent on it .

having trouble deciding what breed would best fit into our home. my husband is a very calm, predictable, routine, and happy guy. I myself am a weird mix. my Latin fire can come out of me either from excitement or stress from time to time, nothing too crazy lol. that side of me loves to go fun walks with hubby, work out, do housework or errands with full speed, high energy or spend time in the kitchen running around lol. then there's my calm quiet side, who likes to read a book, watch Netflix or KZbin, take a nap or sit at my desk to do work. since it will be BOTH our first time being dog owners, and we will plan to have kids in the next couple years (for now it's just us two), we realize this limits our options. a low maintenance and easy to train is high on our list, but we will definitely make time for both obedience school and training at home. we will even want to add another doggy buddy to the mix down the road. I'm concerned that some breeds are TOO energetic, but others are TOO needy and dependant. I wish I found a good mix of both, smart enough to know when it's down time, when it's play and party time lol. then also other's are known for being barkers based on their genetics like the adorable beagle, or the high maintenance chihuahua (not sure we'd go for such a small/tiny dog) and then last thing I consider is I'm very petite and short, husband is 6 feet tall and he would love a large dog, but I'm nervous that an extra large dog might overpower or shove me when happy or playing LOL. we sound weird and not capable of being dog owners but I promise it's our dream and we want an addition to our new small family so bad, and hope to be ready by next year so I have time to research and prepare (:

I see the littlest one, the part corgi, that one is thoughtful, very intelligent and mature for such a young puppy.

I'm always shocked how many dogs end up in a shelter in the USA. Looks like people get them and just get rid of them without thinking.

Thank you for this video. It was really informative and I'm hoping it will help me when I'm ready to start looking for a dog of my own.
