Sharp but temporary pain and I didn’t think I was really injured. Finished rolling in pain slowly realizing something is wrong. Now I’m going to miss weeks right out of the gate and I’m so sad. Thanks for the video, it had a lot of valuable info. A week ago on Friday i was guarding on bottom and crunched and twisted my torso and felt a pop on the lower right rib. Hurt like a bastard, but I thought it was a muscle getting pinched so didnt think it was serious. I didnt train on the Saturday as I was sore but on Monday I felt much better and trained again. I was rolling and when i tried to hip escape and recover closed guard from bottom it happened again, the popping and pain. Then I sat out the next two rolls but I stupidly attempted the choke sit ups at cool down and it popped again. Drove home without too much pain. What is freaking me out is that if I try and lie down on my back (even now 2 days later) I can feel the rib moving and slipping. I have been sleeping sitting up propped on pillows but even then I can feel the ribs shifting if I move. I don't have pain except tenderness over the area if I press down and whenever the rib shifts. Laughing, coughing and even sneezing are out of the question. Deep breaths are ok but a bit sore at the end of the inhale when it's really deep. I am hoping the rib stabilises soon and stops moving around, as this is what causes my issues. Physio said not much can be done other than rest, NSAIDS and heat/ice. Will the rib stabilise and stop shifting? if so, how long till this happens?
@DrJoshJagoda Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The more you do now to stabilize the rib, the better chances of it healing. You really do not want a rib cartilage fracture or anything to be unstable long term.

Great video. I’ve had a couple different rib injuries in bjj over the years, and typically they’ve healed in a month or so. However, one week ago or so I had a big pop while inverting during a roll. I noted it, and kept training. At class a few days later, I was mounted on someone, they bridged into me and I posted. Lots of pain in the ribs. My chest felt tight so I hung on a pull-up bar, and felt something pop again - instant relief. Now, like I think someone said above, my chest is popping constantly - if I laugh, if I turn during my sleep, raising my voice to talk loud. Not really that painful, but some pain. Sometimes it feels like something is stuck out of place, and I can stretch and it feels like it pops in again. Will tape help me regain stability?

During the first few minutes of a 40 minute positional sparring session, my partner was standing up in my guard and came down on my solar plexus / low rib area. I immediately felt something shift in my ribs, then started to experience some mild pain and something just felt off. I was well enough to continue for the remainder of class. Afterwards, I felt sore, but nothing too painful. Before going to bed, I pushed on the side of my ribs and inwards towards the sternum, then heard a audible pop and something shift again. Did I just fix an out of place rib? Pain seems to have lessened a bit, but at first I was worried I made something worse! Damn these scary rib injuries!

I definitely felt a pop, and have felt pain/sensitivity along my rib cage since. But also, I’ve noticed the area right underneath my rib cage (left side, left or center) feels a bit swollen. lately been training the hardest I've ever trained (except maybe in mid 20's) and just the other day got the rib pain going on the left side... I don't practice martial arts so I've limited the cause to a few things: I first noticed the pain while biking, but it might have lingered from the previous day when I was doing back workouts which I usually never fuck up. I was doing muscle ups the day before, so its either the 1) biking, which I do a lot of over 15 miles per day if could guess 2) dead lifts that I was doing during back day the day before or 3) muscles ups which I rarely do, but which I did only last week at some point. I wish I could pinpoint the exact exercise that caused it, but my guess would be general exhaustion on my part from training a lot

I heard a loud crunch and pop in my chest about 2 and a half weeks ago. I think it is a rib bruise or something but it feels more like in my chest, right under my collar bone. So it was super tight and could barely move without pretty significant (dull) pain in the day of and two days after. I don’t think it was a fractured rib or anything since the pain was not sharp and was not too bad. But it has been a little over two weeks now and the pain is like spreading to my neck and shoulder and back. It felt so much better 1 week out but since then almost feels worse. I have done no jiu jitsu or weight lifting since. It seems from watching this video I should start some up again if the pain is tolerable, I just am worried about reagrevating it. Would you think it is fine to start hitting the mats again and some lighter weight lifting? Dr. Josh, I fractured 8th anterior left rib. I've been out of training for 4 weeks, doing PT, moving, and lifting at the gym. I can sleep on my left side, have no pain breathing, and can do solo drills (should rolls, bridging, etc.) How long do you recommend before returning to the mats for drills vs rolling? How long would you flow roll before doing live rolls? I am dying to run drills, but I don't want to re-aggravate or re-injure myself. Thank you for addressing this highly overlooked BJJ injury!
@DrJoshJagoda2 жыл бұрын
Its always hard to say but if you still have difficulty with sleeping, you are going to have difficult time with more aggressive activity! Once your sleeping pain goes away, then you can move into something else for you. Give it at least 6 weeks before you start so you are almost there. It may take longer like 8 weeks but this is definitely the minimum.

So I thought I'd try taking up BJJ and had a trial class last night. Guy was showing me transitions from full mount to an arm bar and while he was shifting I felt this pop in my ribs. Any weight on it feels like a b**ch! Can't wait to have another class, shame I got one so early on

hey Josh, I just popped my rib a little over a week, ago and I'm trying to stay active while also taking it easy to avoid re-injuring myself. To my understanding the protrusion of the cartilage (the bump) is here to stay, and will never go away? I'm trying to understand this, because I don't want to be overcautious when returning to BJJ in a couple of months, but I feel like the bump will be a psychological reminder of the injury
@DrJoshJagoda2 жыл бұрын
That is somewhat true but different for everyone. The bump may stay for a while but slowly reduce. I find that doing some soft tissue to that area helps to reduce this as well as help pain. Good luck healing. I am going to be making another video on exercises you can do to still stay active with this issue. Stay tuned but unfortunately it may not be out for about 3 weeks

Hey brother, I slipped my rib while shrimping out of side control, and it might be something that is different than “popped rib” (this was around my 8th 9th rib) and the hooking technique helped the rib come back into place. How are your ribs now?
@TrungNguyen-sd8qg2 жыл бұрын
@@michaels333 Hey brother, I have the exact same issue as you. 6 months later since my injury, its all fine, it doesn't seem to move that much, after doing exercises from this YT. The only time it "slips"/moves is when I apply pressure to it and shift my body. Definitely follow the advice here and take it easy while doing the right exercises to help with the healing. Speedy recovery!

Hey Josh, a few months ago I got put in a cradle and I felt three pops right under my left peck and it was definitely hurting at the time I couldn’t lay on my side I took 6 weeks off it healed but it felt like I didn’t have full mobility like something was blocking me from going fully down, anyways fast ford a few months. Last week I had a weird pop in the same place and I noticed I had more mobility on that side again but no pain it was just more sore and tightness, what do you think I should do?
@stephenpenilla1152 Жыл бұрын
Also fast forward 4 days later after the second time it popped There was no pain No soreness or anything And I like lightly play wrestled with my brother and it did a small little pop and the soreness came back
@DrJoshJagoda Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you need to avoid continuing to pop them. It will only lead to more pain/injury and instability in the future.

i was sparring 2 weeks ago (boxing) and damaged my rib but unsure if broke, fracture, popped... never heard of popped rib before but was no bruising on the skin at all and felt ok when feeling it no bump or broke feeling just paaaaaaainful but now after 2 weeks the pains going i can feel a bump there so is that popped? thanks
@DrJoshJagoda2 жыл бұрын
The bump is not necessarily a pop. I find it is the area where the cartilage was damaged and there is a remodeling process occuring at that site
@morninglory89882 жыл бұрын
A few days ago my rib (right below my left pec) dislocated / popped (it was visible through the skin) and then it came back into place after like a few seconds. I don't really feel pain, just discomfort when trying to lay in bed or take the biggest breath possible. Does it mean that these ligaments holding it in place have to heal over time? I know I won't spar for a while now but I wanted to lift some weights in the meantime and I am afraid it would dislocate again.
@DrJoshJagoda2 жыл бұрын
Yes the ligaments need to heal over time and in the case of rib pain, it can be anywhere between 6 and 12 weeks. It can definitely linger as they can often get irritated. Try your best not to "pop" them in or out so that they can stabilize. Its advised to use tape to help if you need some comfort. All the best!

Is there any work out routine that may help protect rib cage?? Even if it's bodybuilding
@DrJoshJagoda Жыл бұрын
There is not really any specific routine. But important to maintain thoracic and spine mobility as well as core strength.

I was doing Jiujitsu. I was in bottom and was trynna hip escape and guy on top put pressure. I heard a pop and so did he. I felt like a lump and a cramping pressure feeing on my lower left rib it hurt for like 5secs. Now it’s just tender and when I bend sometimes it pops again and then I curve out stretch up and it pops again with relief. Was thinking I’ll go to doctors in a couple days if this keeps happening.

I had a habit of popping my ribs like 6 months before . There was no problem in doing that , i use to aggressively pop my rib nuts . Suddenly it started to hurt like 4 months ago and so I stopped because I couldn’t even turn a little . Slowly it got normal but everytime i try to twist my ribs to pop like i did before i started to hurt bad . And now these days its again hurting back and its not like it used to be before what should i do ?
