This should be a top 5 golf swing drill/tip on all of youtube. No expensive aid, just a certain diameter rope anyone can buy at the hardware store. I also gained close to 10yards on my 60 degree wedge after watching Dr Kwon on Be Better Golf, because I was so prone to opening early on the downswing and/or pulling my arms. I am a single digit hdcp and I am confident I can get to scratch simply from watching less than 30 min of Dr Kwon. I now know why my misses are pulls or hooks and it’s easy to fix

Thank you Dr. Kwon for posting. I know it adds to your work load and probably is more of a service. You are truly spreading knowledge. I have been using a rope without being knowledgeable for some time but now I see that there are indeed checkpoints to provide feedback. I have been using the step one and step two drill for a couple of years before even hearing about you. Now that I have been able to study your videos and those of Brendon I realize I was doing it quite incorrectly. Still I believe it was helpful in improving pressure transfer. Hopefully I can clean it up a bit but I think instruction might be needed. This was a little too long but I really want you to know how valuable this data is to those of us who have been swinging inefficiently for years.

I recently started swinging a rolled up towel and it is amazing how much it works as a training and feel aid. Agree the key is to coordinate the body movement from the ground up. Feeling a pull starting down is an amazing feeling that directly translates to a real club.

Thank you Dr. Kwon. I am grateful for your knowledge. I'd be interested in your expertise on the differences in biomechanics of a female vs. male golf swing if there are any. Given women tend to have wider hips, generally shorter and less musculature I would think our mechanics might vary. (I think of the chair challenge which few men can accomplish but women do so easily). And if there are differences would love a video addressing women's swings. Most training content address men primarily. Thank you.

Hi, without going into a lot of detail you are 100% correct. Women's lower body is rs are stronger and upper weaker. What Kwon be teaches is essentially the swing used by Korean women pros from whom I take lessons. It minimizes the arm strength and utilizes the core. It works for everyone but is why smaller women will benefit. Look closely at most body types on LPGA and you will see lower body dominance. The tall slimmer ones have greater leverage at their disposal and don't need to look like they have had three or four kids. Play well

I started doing this rope drill. Didn't even have to do it much. My golf swing issue has always been my arms being too fast and pulling my shots. My last 6 rounds have been some of the best in my life with ball-striking. If I could putt I'd be a scratch golfer.

Hi Dr Kwon. I love all your instruction. I am also using thge rope quite often. You also have instruction with a driver, I have a Orangewhip which has a very flexible shaft which gives you an in between feeling of the rope and the shaft. It helps in doing the trickermotion and the step drills with a continous motion. Perhaps you can do a video about it.🙂😊

I use and have my students use a beach towel. Toe a knot on one end and the knot will be the swinging end that whips around the body. I use for both my one plane and two plane swing students. Where the knot wraps around your chest hi or low determines which plane they are working on. Great, great drill.

Imagine a cone-shaped space in which you are allowed to move. You can move the pelvis and legs freely but the lateral motion becomes smaller at the top. This is the opposite to a sway. With this cone-shaped motion, you will be able to push the ground down and outward.

Hi Dr Kwon, I love how the rope swing keeps me from rushing at the top. I worry about my real swing finish i.e. not finishing my swing during training. I would like to do 3-4 cycles of your rope swing and then a complete finish. Or do have a drill to aid in finishing a swing?

With the rope, mainly work on developing an good body rhythm with a large number of continuous swings. You can put different levels of effort as you swing. With the club, you can limit the number of pre-swings to perhaps 3, and then 2, and then 1... Gradually moving to no pre-swing.

I will be tryjng that tomorrow!! In your next video could you do the rope swing down the line. As i tend to be steep in the downswing as my hands tend to move out from the top it would be interesting to see if the rope is inside or on the same plane as the backswing. Your step drills have improved my game for sure but my takeaway has gotten a little low and inside. When the club is swung forward as a trigger the wrists and forearns have released but for me at least they want and need to roll back in the backswing which feels very natural coming from the club at 12 oclock, promoting the club to get inside rather than outside the hands at club parallel in the backswing and my trail elbow wants to fold quickly and move behind me to accomodate the faster motion of the club passing my body. I noticed when Brendan from bbg was drilling the 1st stage he was similar. Have you a thought on this ??? In brief how to keep the club path correct in the backswing. Perhaps I am throwing the club to around to the left as part of the trigger move but my arms are following my hips which are rotating open. At 12.33 of the Stage 1 if you play etc vid if you freeze it at club parallel the club is clearly way inside Brendans hands. Thanks again and love your work. All the best from Ireland!!!!

Came here again after swinging two clubs at a time like this on the range. The heaviness made me use my feet and legs/ torque/ground pressure to get the thing on plane and around me safely. What would be the benefits of doing something like this compared to the rope?

Heavier objects are beneficial in terms of feeling the motion of the device. Lighter objects are beneficial as you have to work carefully with the device to produce the intended motion. Objects with flexibility are good for finding the right timing. It is in general beneficial to work with tools of different inertial properties to fully develop the motor system in your body.

Both are quite useful. They have slight different physical characteristics and you will need to work with them.

Dear Dr Kwon Is there a specific reason why you use a doubled over 3/4 inch (19mm) 7 foot rope instead of 6/8 inch (38mm) 3.5 foot rope.... Would it achieve the same result? Would there be any difference between using Nylon vs Polyester as they have similar properties. Thanks in advance.

You can use any rope as long as they have reasonable weight and length. To me, folded 3/4" double braid nylon rope gave me the best feel so stick to it. Polyester rope is slightly heavier than the nylon rope.

I think the key here is how to kickstart the backswing in a real situation, where you cannot kickstart it by balancing the club the other way and thus you (myself) tend to either start a backwing very arms dominating or by sliding the hips. Is there a recommended thing thought or move?

Yes. The initial shift away makes the BS a lot easier. If you don't shift, you tend to use the arms.

Is it normal for this to be pretty painful when the rope hits your body on the backswing? Doesn't hurt at all as hard as I swing but on the backswing it's quite painful - it's going under my arm and hitting about the middle of my chest - maybe I am just swinging too fast on the back swing?

You have to slow down the rope nicely at the end of the BS.

Give a little bit of elbow flexion toward the end of BS with extra shoulder turn. This will make the rope slide around the chest.
