Age is not the definitive factor it’s made out to be when it comes to our health. We can use our age as a baseline for tracking our health and longevity, but it isn’t stagnant. For example, certain types of testing can help us compare our biological age to our calendar age in order to tinker with our wellness routine and achieve the milestones we’re after. With the right steps, we can slow down and even sometimes reverse the aging process.
When it comes to our biological age, or the measure of how well our body is actually functioning for whatever life stage we are in, there are many things that impact it. Diet, lifestyle patterns like exercise and sleep, and stress are all involved in forming our biological age, along with many other factors like blood sugar, inflammation, and genetics. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m joined by Dr. David Sinclair to explore the topic of longevity and anti-aging and how he reduced his own internal age by more than 20 years. Dr. Sinclair is a professor in the Department of Genetics and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, where he and his colleagues study longevity, aging, and how to slow its effects.

The best thing to do is to stop eating all of the time ! Years ago , when I was 198 pounds and sick 😷 with everything , my doctor told me I ate to much . Now I’m 127 pounds nearly 50 and don’t look a day over 28 , with excellent blood work all organic without crazy effort ! ! I eat two meals a day , sometimes , three if I’m really hungry 😋 The bottom line is ….I listen to my body and I only eat when I’m hungry 😋 people are so possessed by food 😩😡

If it weren't for crohn's i dont know if i would ever get on board on the marvellous ship of wellness and long living. I think that i might start feeling lucky about my disease because of all the doors to science and biochemistry that it opened for me! I'm loving it!!

Many things I intuitively had been doing but test was a confirmation. Lactose intolerance, (probably why going vegan 6 yrs ago helped so much) gluten sensitivity and poor methylation pathway.s so many more things you learn about yourself. Six months ago I got some blood numbers that leaned toward an autoimmune disorder. I freaked out. Went gluten-free and stopped eating sugar, processed foods. Introduced live probiotic sauerkraut and got my gut healthy. Now six months later, I've lost 20 pounds which is tough for females at age 65. I hadn't been able to lose more than 5 lbs for years. I eat twice a day with the first one being ten cups of fruits and veggies along with chia and flaxseed in a smoothie. Dinner is normal, whatever I want in my boundaries. On occasion, went for 16- 20 hr fasting. Lost weight with not much exercise, but mild walking. Rheumatologist said he saw nothing of concern now.

Yes, when we shift back to an ancestral-type lifestyle, meaning less of a garbage that’s being sold as a food because we’re finding more and more that it’s a toxic product, and exercise. Back in the day, we had to work for our food physically and then we were outside all the time!. We were in the extremes, the cold, and the heat, so that makes so much sense! Love this discussion. When we snap out of the pleasure principle, we find the true pleasure, the true living !!! Health and Vitality. And more focus. Our brains are so much healthier too, which means more power in our senses, and that is be on the five senses! Look around we are having a crisis of the brains in the world right now. Madness appears to be setting in. Berberine is a great supplement that lowers the effect of carbohydrates on a person’s insulin. It also kills parasites! I believe parasites are also causing a lot of illness and death. Dr. Alan Macdonald proved that in his speech called MS as a paracytosis.

At 77 and having had to experience being told I only had months to live, during which I went through the saga of grieving in an almost continuous lock-down in Melbourne Australia. which turned out to be a misdiagnosis, i would welcome some discussion on the role of losing fear of death, simply as a part of ‘resetting’ for well-being. Of course the downside of all this is that the people likely to be in a position to benefit and maybe privatise longevity research are the very same, who won’t allow free basic health care for millions of people. Apart from ethical concerns, I don’t think I’m intelligent enough to sort through the issues of ‘suffering and death’ being at the core of what makes us ‘human’, so I’m just left wondering what it might be like to have my body reset from 60 to 30, when we’re told that our brains change as we go… an old mind in hormone driven, young body…traumas and thrills, a new horizon for therapy?

interesting to see the different approaches, at least that's my takeaway Sinclair: studies are important but sometimes taken as valid in a vacuum; some detail on diet; no strict rules; behavior is important but goal is to have a drug- Eventually, there is a drug for everything; take pills as a way of thinking Longo: go back to first principles and see underlying mechanisms; design around it; change lifestyle permanently; find what's naturally encoded and activate it with lifestyle way of thinking. Both solid science but the approach is to find a common denominator in one, and add up all "reasonably good enough evidence" for the other I think is precious that both are working on it from different perspectives; the intersection of the 2 will lead everyone on the correct path Ndr: Not a fan of pills and definetely the least I can take, the better

@@squirt3179 I remember that years ago (I think it was in 2017 or 2018) I have found a video on this subject on Dr. Berg's channel (it was long before he became so popular). He was saying something that has attracted my attention because it was unusual and never heard before. Basically, he was saying that all the menopause symptoms wouldn't appear if the suprarenal glands would work correctly. Basically, those glands are supposed to take the function of ovaries after menopause. But if they are already tired, they can't cope and the woman starts feeling all those things and the body looses body mass, etc. I think that the answer to your question is somewhere here. You should check on his channel. I am sure that you xan find something useful there. He usually makes several gideos on the same subject because he keeps himself and his followers updated. Also, you could check on dr. Ekberg's channel. (Yes, their names sound quite similar.) Sorry for my English. I know that I must have butchered the name of those glands.

Dr. Sinclair said at one point that he suggests not eating too many carbs. But if you look at the Blue Zone, Italians or Japanese's diet is composed over 50% of carbs. Italians eat so many grain-based foods: bread, pasta, pizza, pastries. Japanese eat rice at every meal, and btw they are widely recommended to make rice 60% of each meal. So I don't know how that adds up.... I wish to know more about the research about how carbs are not beneficial.

Isn’t it primarily a sugar and trans fat problem when they talk about carbs? I think they speak generally about avoiding all carbs because of the bad quality of food in the US. People in Italy and Japan seem to be more lucky with the quality of their products.

I feel like sugar is more of an issue than just carbs in general. I recently had baked goods from other countries and they are noticeably less sweet than what I'm used to. I can only imagine that Italians are just eating their bread products with far less sugar. And pairing carbs with protein and fat can lessen the blood glucose spike you get with simple carbs. So in the US it's common for people to get a donut or two with some coffee with even more sugar and it's just so much worse than a baked good with much lower sugar paired with some eggs or something. And eating some bread with a protein rich dinner is so much different than eating cookies for a mid afternoon snack.

My uncle talked about passing in his sleep for decades. One day he played golf and had lunch with his friends. He passed in his sleep that night at 73 years old. His wife thought he was still sleeping when she saw him in the morning but soon found out he had passed. He got his wish. Some years later his wife wanted to notified before she passed. Her daughter told me she was holding her mother's hand one morning and her mother told her she had been notified. She asked her daughter if she had paid the bills and the daughter said she had. Right after when she was still holding her mother's hand she felt the energy leave the hand. My cousin said her parents got their wishes. They passed the way they wanted.

You are what you eat. Your diet impacts your health. Lower stress, reduce obesity and more exercise are key to a healthy life. Obesity in children and adults is rising across the world. Fast food and sugary drinks are contributing to the problem of poor health and obesity. Eat a healthy plant based diet and exercise regularly. Reduce or ELIMINATE cows milk, eggs, cheese and meat. Eat more salad greens, beans, fruit and vegetables. Eliminate fast food, snacks like cookies, cakes, chips, and sugary drinks and juices. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Regular exercise will help you sleep better. Yoga is a great stress reducer. Obesity is all too common today. Get off the couch. Get off the phone, ipad or video game. A variety of stretching and other exercises help with increased mobility. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for fun. Every city should be a bicycle city. Speak up for bicycles in your community

Organic pasture raised eggs and meat is super good for you and has health benefits to the gut. Even raw dairy is actually anti inflammatory due to the beneficial enzymes and bacteria that are there since it hasn’t been pasteurized. Which makes it super easy for the body to break down lactose. But I do agree adding lots of fruits and veggies for the microbiome

@Dr.DavidSinclair @Mark I want to live forever. To always see the ever-changing future of technology, science, and health. I eat one meal a day 90% of the time occasionally 2 meals not often. I am 27 and yet people always think I am 18 (without a beard chiseled jaw etc). My grandma lived until 85 with brain cancer the rest of my family 90+ others 80+ with other cancers. None of them ever fasted. I do IF, only eat clean food that I cook. I hate going to stores and fast food thanks to my high functioning Autism which is mostly sensory issues. I also have a repaired heart condition called TOF, and DiGeorge 22Q11, so with my gene mutations will probably live for a long time like dogs that are mixed mutts live forever. Oh, my aorta is also right-sided. I know HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript. I want to see flying cars and again just the future of technology. Maybe there will even be a cure for cancers or other people with disabilities like Autism and TOF or other genetic issues. I personally don't have cancer, just other issues and cancer runs through my family. I walk an hour a day and sleep 8+ hours every day. I also use Oura ring and other devices to track steps and sleep and personal data. I try to always get a minimum of 8000 steps a day which is 4 miles. Also my uncle retired as a sleep doctor so really ironed in our family how important sleep is.

I'm going to be 60 next year yet I have been through a bad time sort of. I mean on one side of the coin I am not sad about who and what and where I am except that I am getting less fit all the time and if I can find a reason not to do something that I don't really want to do I do that. This is bad as far as I can tell, like you say exercise and I say no, it hurts too much. OK, obviously that is not the right response but when I try and do something so simple like walk a little ways I can see that I'm a very slow walker when I used to walk much faster, distance basically was not an issue but now I am slow and weak and if I walk out for 30 minutes the walk home will take like 60 minutes and I will not be all happy that I got my walk in, I will just want a drink and to find a bed to take a nap. So I have a simple question. How do I get into a fitness routine that will get me out of my hole and back into life? I guess that if I get in some basic fitness for 8 weeks or maybe more I can do the work without ending up with sore legs for 3 days and feel like I can do it. How?

I am a retired PT and it sounds like you are very deconditioned and it will take time . First, you are 60 so I think you should see a doctor and see if you are healthy enough to exercise. if he gives the ok then start exercising under supervision of say a personal trainer who can monitor your vital signs. If you are sore for 3 days after exercising yo are doing WAY TO MUCH . If the doctor gives the ok I would probably start with about a 10 minute walk. Walk for 5 minutes outside, then turn around and go back.

13h fast is already good. People are so stuck on numbers like 16h or 18h. More is not necessarily better. Depends alot on the foods you eat, BMI, exercise, etc. Most people these days have around 8-10h fast window with bad diets and sedentary lifestyles. Which is recipe for disease.

I have a low blood pressure, never could go without early breakfast and meals every 2-3 hours. Try to increase your fasting gradually. I could easily go 24_30 hours without food and water, if I tried to go longer i hit the wall. I built up a fasting regime slowly. Now I fast easily 16 hours every day. 20 hours once a week, will bring back 36 hours once a month

Getting your body through stress everyday to add few years...sometimes i think what's the point really? Most people enjoy food and love sugar, that makes them feel good. So living to 80-90 and enjoy everyday of your life or add few more years and restrain yourself every single day then die at 95. Will fasting and cold shower make you live to 120? No! With that in mind i am still obssesed with longevity for more than a decade. I do fasting here and there and miss some sugar food here and there. But im not going to "suffer" by fasting several days or doing 22/2 diet and avoid all sugars all my life. What the point in life then? Not eating to extend few years is a poor solution really. Humanity need to come up with something better, like a pill that mimic this fasting mechanisim.

This is exactly what I think. However problem is that, this scam called David Sinclair spent some years in laboratory researching some substances and at the end came out giving diet advices. You don’t need to have phd in biochemistry to tell don’t consume animal protein which is absolute nonsense because most long living and healthy people on earth had liberal amount of animal products… seems like after selling scam company for 700million usd, he got some shares in fake meat industry

This bio alchemy replaces the old alchemy of transferring base metal into gold by reversing old bodies into young bodies. Dr. David Sinclair advocates eating less animal protein, and skipping breakfast after overnight fasting. He also advocates the use of metformin which blunts muscle hypertrophy in response to progressive exercise training in older adults. Given sarcopenia, the gradual loss of muscle mass due to aging, why would Dr. Sinclair claim his advice to be beneficial for longevity?
