Ever been told that you have injured a 'cartilage pad' inside your knee? Or maybe that you need surgery to trim away some 'loose cartilage' within your knee joint? In this situation you've probably sustained a meniscal tear. Whilst knee ligaments seem to get all of the attention in the media, the meniscus is the true unsung hero of your knee joint! In this video, find out exactly what a meniscus does inside your knee joint, and what the best treatment is for your meniscal tear. The treatment varies hugely based on your age and the type of meniscal tear you have....
Dr Matthew Hutchinson is an orthopaedic surgeon based in Adelaide, South Australia. He has a special interest in minimally-invasive knee surgery, especially the treatment of meniscal tears in both adults and growing athletes. Dr Hutchinson treats some of the best athletes in Australia, in the AFL, AFLW, SANFL, NBL and Superleague Netball. He offers the same very high level of treatment to weekend warriors, emerging junior athletes and everyday patients.

Excellent video! You basically summed up everything I heard in like 5-10 other videos combined. Great job :) I'm 36 and have a meniscus tear. It happened like 5 months ago. Had an MRI scan too. I have barely any problems in my day to day life but it limits my mobility executing my sport. I'm really scared about what's going to happen to my knee in the future and I'm sure either way I'll regret that I didn't get multiple opinions. As of right now I basically rely on my own research. I wish everyone else here a quick recovery and a long life :)

This is the same problem I have now, this has happened To me since May 14/2023and up to now, I'm still feeling pain. For few times when I tried to do my constant self-training on the ball and off the ball, when I was training on the ball that day after my self-trainer passed me the ball like trying to track the ball, I immediately felt real pain inside my right knee, and I stop the training. To be frank, something, I will be alone crying by myself that I have failed to accomplish my dream of becoming the best player in the world because looking at reality, who is going to help? Or which of the teams in the world would like to accept me in such a situation, as we all know, football goes by age. As soon you are older, there is no team that will sign you, looking at my age 16 years with such great problem, however, God who does everything, and he knows what is better for me, others can't talk, can't see, can't walk, and can't wake up, so like if I'm doing all these, all praise be to him. Perhaps maybe soccer is not a good support for me looking at such an issue. Like something, I really feel different, like seeing my friends playing while we all used to play together, and yet, I'm not among them. This makes me cry as well. I hope 🙏 my knee will be better, I pray.

I’m on the same boat. Apparently I have a meniscus tear on my inner right knee. Got it in an accident when someone tboned my car on the driver side. Knee jerked all over the place and tore it. It locks my knee at less than 45 degrees. Getting physical therapy to see if it helps. Last thing I want is surgery. Not sure if I’ll ever be the same if I don’t get it done. Wish you luck.

@@erikgomez5098 gl to you! I have lost 50 pounds in the last 3 months and worked really hard to get fit again. I do daily exercises to help get better knee mobility and it's paying off. Like 2 months ago I would have never thought to make this kind of progress without surgery but it's possible. Obviously it depends on the case but I would recommend physio therapy first and see how much quality of life you can get back. I wish you a fast recovery and best of luck to get back to where you were. Keep us updated :)

@@AbuBility-yp7sx You're 16? From my research that seems to be great age to get surgery. Blood flow is still great at that young age and it will likely heal well. Consult some doctors in your areas and get opinions. At that young age surgery is a great option as you got your whole life ahead of you :)

I am about to have my second menisectomy in 18 months (different knees). My first menisectomy should have been a (left) knee replacement. I will eventually have to have both knees replaced because I have degenerative arthritis. From my experience, menisectomies are band-aids. After my first menisectomy (left knee) I wished the doctor had just done a knee replacement. Different doctor this time, so I am hoping for better results. My meniscus tear in my right knee doesn't seem as bad and I do not have bone on bone like I do my left knee. hank you for your explanation. I have read a lot, talked to a few orthopedic surgeons, CRPs, PAs, and read/watch a lot of information on the meniscus. This is the most precise and easy to understand of anything I have come across. Thank you for your post.

To those who are asking me how I am doing now - I am doing fine. Haven't received any PRP treatment nor thinking of going for it. Surgery has never been an option as I wanted to heal it by doing strength training. As of now, doing ankle weights once a week mostly, dumbbell exercises twice a week and yoga (leg strengthening). I am able to walk long distances, go for brisk walk for more than 30 mins, do little indoor jogging and sit down/up, do malasan. Infact, I am feeling more confident now than ever. Strengthening the quads, hips, ankles is working for me.

Hmmm interesting that a menisectomy does not increase chances of arthritis. Surely "less" shock absorption is what can accelerate arthritis, so having meniscus that is damaged but is asymtomatic is better than removal of it??

I am older, but, I definitely injured my knee so it was acute. X-ray shows no fracture of significant arthritis. MRI shows complex radial medial tear, Baker's cyst. loose bodies, tissue edema & a bone bruise. This did not happen over time,and I knew exactly how it happened. I have a brace, compression hose.walker & have started PT. My Ortho will try a cortisone shot soon. I am 13 wks out and still have a lot of pain. Surgery will probably happen as I have been having my knee lock up, and, I have had a episode of stabbing pain for 3 hrs. Feels like there is no solution to this nightmare.

THANK YOU DOCTOR HUTCHINSON! THESE QUESTIONS GO OUT TO ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER THESE AND I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SPEEDY AND GOOD RECOVERY. 10 weeks after your meniscectomy were you able to bend your leg all the way back as far as your right leg bends back? Or are you only able to bend it about 90°? And on bending it about 90° did you feel pressure in the knee? Did you still have some swelling of the knee? Were you easily able to walk up and down steps or did you still have a limited range that made it difficult? I am in my mid 60s and had a partial medial bucket handle meniscectomy. My surgeon showed me the pics. There's no wear or damage to my cartilage. He showed how smooth and undamaged it is. And I was walking around with the bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months until the surgery! And my job is a physical one. I'm just very lucky. This is my situation. I'm trying to get an idea of all of this through searching online different resources. I'm going through PT now.

@8sun52 2 жыл бұрын
@@fazeelalaher6250 Yes. Unfortunately it has to be done. I guess the doctor explained to you what a bucket handle meniscus tear is? It will flop around sometimes and jam your knee and restrict knee bending range. It has to be done. It can't be left like that. And my personal suspicion is by leaving it like that the meniscus might tear even more. I'm a little over 6 months with my bucket handle partial meniscectomy And I can almost bend my knee all the way back to heal-near-rear-end. About 5 more inches to go. After surgery make sure you check out KZbin videos on how to begin "softening up" the scar tissue (after the incisions are completely healed) because that's what is restricting range of motion. But the immediate swelling from the trauma of the incisions will restrict your range of motion also. But start on that scar tissue as soon as your doctor recommends. Everybody's healing time towards a complete or almost complete range of motion is different. To anybody, if anything I said here is incorrect or partially incorrect, please correct it. I'm just going on what I've been reading and my own experience.

1man1bike1road: I also had one 9 days ago here in Toronto. Currently great knee discomfort. Doesn’t seem to have improved at all. Darn! Good luck with your procedure.

Dr Matthew. An MRI found degenerative and frayed meniscus with a tear on the lateral and medial meniscus on my left knee. I am in my 70s but otherwise well. I have no pain nor swelling or functional impairment. I only get clicking for about 15 seconds when starting to walk and it then goes away. Would physio help in this regard. Thanks

That’s a shame! I always admired the NHS and Canada’s healthcare, which I assume is similar to Australia and NZ. If it isn’t the cost in the US it’s the delays in the UK and former colonies. Somehow, someday surely we will all receive the healthcare we need in a timely manner.
