September 2021. Fly on the edge of Bílina quarry in Ústecký kraj, Czech Republic. This brown rown coal quarry produces 8-9 million tonnes of coal annually. It was opened in the second half of 20th century under the name of Maxim Gorkij. Due to its location, 5 villages were destroyed (Břežánky in 1972, Břešťany in 1972, Jenišův Újezd between 1972-1974, Liptice in 1976 and Libkovice in 1991-1993).
At the bottom of the quarry is also a drainage canal which is the absolute lowest point in the Czech Republic territory. As it was man-made, it continues to become deeper every year. In 2014, the lowest point was at 20.4m above sea level.
