My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Ireland for our 25th anniversary. We were able to get the ferry boat captain to take us over to the castle in a small boat and I convinced him to to help us renew our wedding vows in the castle. Absolutely spiritual moment! A few years later our son and his girlfriend went to Ireland on vacation and he proposed at the castle.

One of the many great things about Ireland is there's just no "security" anywhere--lovely people and everything's on the "honor system". You can just roll up to places that in the UK/Europe/USA would be fenced off, scary signs, security cams, limited hours of access... and ENJOY them in a simple and respectful way. I'm guessing this is a direct result of NOT having a colonial past, NOT having a slavery past, and remaining NEUTRAL in the affairs of other nations.

Louise Simard - I was in Roscommon in 1978 and hot air ballooning over these waters and the castle. I also visited with Lady O'Connor who had an archive of materials in which Andrew had written home to the O'Connor's and MacDermotts. I also visited with The MacDermott, the Prince of Coolavin and his wife Felicity. It was a magical and memorable time. Andrew MacDermott is my great, great grandfather and his daughter Jane by great grandmother.

it's a fake castle
@tadghsmith14575 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t describe it as “fake” exactly. There have been a number of different castles and keeps on the island over the centuries. The current structure dates from c1800 and was built in a romanticist style. It was lived in as a summer house until it was destroyed in a fire in the 1940’s. Reducing it to its current condition.

Would you restore the floors old-school style, i.e. wooden planks, and live with all the *creaking and squeaking* or go with something modern and quiet such as lightweight concrete cast-in-place slabs (e.g. Hambro D500 or SpeedFloor)?... and the *roof* whatcha gonna do about that?... rain's gotta drain!

To those with Romantic notions of restoring such a place to 21st Century habitability, your 1st Reality Check would be in-writing quotes from the local utilities on the cost to run *electricity and natural gas* lines out there. That's not a warm climate, and, just like this video, it's overcast much of the time, i.e. you're going to have a heck of a *heating bill* ;')

Be proud of your heritage! Restore these beautiful structures...... - The people in the Caribbean figured out how to make cement floors between levels, and cement roofs... see this vid for details: Pouring The Concrete Roof Easy Step - Building A Country House
