I enjoyed your demo. I think your information is very well communicated. You were correct about the TTL logic detecting a high (1) at above 2.0v (not 2.8v), which is true for all families except CMOS. However, logic lows (0) must be below 0.8v, not just below 2.8v. A simple solution to reducing 5v to 3.3v is to us a zener diode (1N4614) in series with the TTL output and the 3.3v input.

I use a small trick with those RGB LEDs to get a clear full color range for photos , motion picture and even for the nacked eye view. Cover the LED with a tube of white paper. You get a better color mix due to the diffusion effect of the paper and the camera sensors won't saturate with excessive glow. I usually extend the paper tube one or two centimetres above the LED top and get a nice color stick.

Hello, it is great these are so inexpensive now, I used a LIDAR 8 years ago which cost around $1,000 and only covered 240 degrees. 33:12 Shows MOTOCTL connecting to PIN 2, but it should be PIN 3 for PWM. The voice over is correct.

I noticed the same error Roger! But in the example Arduino code it shows MOTOCTL on pin 3, so the astute students should have no problem catching and correcting that issue.

LIDAR may just be coming to the consumer market now, but in reality, LIDAR has been used by various militaries for decades now. Think GPS. When the public got access to it, it had already been in use in various forms and by varying nations (Russia's version is called GLONASS) since the Cold War was still in full swing. Also think about how long HAARP was in a fully-operable state before they started renting out services to mineral and petroleum corporations that want to know what's under the ground before they even attempt to do anything with the land in question. Don't get me wrong... LIDAR is cool, and I'd love to see what non-military uses we can find for it in the future and all, but it's not new.

Nice tutorial. I bought the latest A1M8 RPLIDAR, it comes with a different connector. I attached it to an arduino Micro so I could use the Serial1 port for the lidar. Could not get it to work. Only then I read the datasheet, duh.. the new version is not 5V tolerant, only 3.3V so you need to be aware of that. I think I destroyed my new RPLIDAR because whatever I tried I get no response from it. Checked with an oscilloscope, no data.

After a bit more research I found out that the latest A1M8 firmware (1.29) does not work with the Arduino library used here. All new rplidars sold now have the new firmware.

Great Tutorial. Just one comment, in both the narration and the actual sketch for the larger LIDAR, you comment that you are connecting to pin 3, but the diagram shows connection to pin two on the arduino (at point 33:07 in the video). Note this might cause confusion - especially as pin two is the interrupt pin, and (as far as I recall) not the pwm pin.

A buyer of this on Amazon says this is worthless outdoors despite the outdoor range claims in the manufacturer's manual. This is understandable since this uses a focused IR LED and not a laser. It's like trying to use an IR controlled aircraft outdoors - too much IR noise from our local star overwhelms any reflected signal . His comment: "I tried 2 of these hooked up to an Arduino Nano and also a laptop running their code. Range outdoors is about 3 feet. The best I ever did was 7 feet and this was in the shade. Please note it will not read distances less than 1 foot and when it errors it can put out some big numbers. bottom line is it works indoors ok. Outdoors forget it..."

Hi, just wondering where the reference point is for the sensor? In other words, are angles measured starting from a reference angle on the spinning wheel or a reference point on the main mounting/construction/frame of the sensor? I want to detect a specific area with the sensor mounted permanently but I'm worried the reference point will start at a different point every time the sensor is turned on. Thanks!

Great job as always. I appreciate your technical discipline (on color coding, logic levels, etc) when interconnecting devices for demonstration. I look forward to your videos particularly on LIDAR applications. I was actually one of those military guys, way back when, trying to figure out how do make best use of LIDAR for remote sensing and target classification. At the time we were living with the common notion that RADAR was only marginally effective in any given application. We needed better resolution and LIDAR looked promising despite some obvious limitations. Fast forward to today's technology and here we are experimenting with low cost devices that are eye-watering in their capability.

This got me thinking, in the real world with multiple cars in fairly close proximity of each other, would the signal from the LIDAR emitted from other vehicles interfere with your own car's LIDAR receiver? Hmm... The only solution I can think of is encoding the signal with a unique encryption key for each LIDAR device/vehicle. Any thoughts on this? Also, how can the electronic or mechanical failure of a LIDAR be mitigated in the real world scenario (immediate shutdown of a vehicle by slowing it down/pulling over, or having multiple backup sensors?)

Tch, I wanted to know how it does serial without a timing line.

Can the TF mini LiDAR also be used to plot a map for SLAM? The RPLIDAR is a little out of my budget for my project. I'd be grateful to hear from you or anyone that can help. Thanks. Great video.

The thing to consider is its a single point LiDAR. Take a pencil and put a dot on the wall, that is the point for the distance value you get from it. If you had it on a servo and moved back and forth, take that dot and draw a horizontal line on the wall, its length changes a bit depending on distance from the wall, that is now what you could get out of it, but there is problems with actually implementing that because you need to know the angle of the servo when the sample was taken. The 360 LiDAR gives a full slice, a line all the way around the room of the closest thing it has vision of, minus windows (With a higher quality unit you can map inside people houses from the street through their windows), and is already setup to tell you the distance and angle the sensor was at. If you only need a single point in one direction with the benefits of LiDAR for your system, a TF Mini can work, but if you need LiDAR points in multiple directions (two TF Minis pointed left and right as an example) you are getting into the price range of a 360 LiDAR which gives you way more then that. I imagine for what you are doing with SLAM you need more then a single point in one direction, so it would be worth saving up for the 360 LiDAR.

@@KlockworXMusic Hey, I never thought of it that way. Thanks for helping. I realize i cannot use TF mini for my project. I'll probably just save up for RPLIDAR. Thanks though. I appreciate the effort :)

@@uzmamhate1328 No worries. I find its usually better to get the better option, usually the more expensive option, right off the bat. If not, I end up buying it anyhow when the cheaper option doesn't work and then I have spent even more money. Hope the RPLiDAR works out for your SLAM needs.
