As an old-school analog FPV flyer, I wanted to finally go digital, but always balked at the price and honestly kinda tired of building and configuring stuff. I guess the new Avata is calling my name. It's not unlike the iPhone iMac vs Android PC debate. At some point you don't mind paying more for good performance and easy user experience, even if you're locked into that brand.

I finally got mine a couple weeks ago, started flying in the garage to get to know the motion controller. First time, surprised I didn’t hit anything at all, (in Beginner Mode) Now been a couple times outdoors around the front of the house. Went out to field, and much better confidence, gradually getting the controls/settings in better touch. Did a few circles around myself, up to high, swoop downs etc. So far so good, not planning to get exotic like you, which is awesome! Flyin like grampa’ will have to do for now! LOL!🇺🇸

I think the Avata is hands down the better choice for a total beginner, without any gear. You get a good drone, with legit support, large user base, that's easy to use with multiple intuitive control systems. Then, you can upgrade to the FPV controller to get more skilled. Once you have the accessories, you can start getting into hobby building. I'm sure O4 units will be around soon, and honestly it's the best transmission system out there. You'll already have quality gear to use with a dedicated O4 unit on future FPV drones. It takes the guessing game out of picking the right parts, and what controller you should go with, and you get a conplete package that just works, and has future usability going forward. Plus, the Avata gets longer flight time than any kf these other little fpv drones, so more time to learn.

Great video. I crashed my Avata 2 from a dive and hit a power line at about 23 meters up. It crashed on grass, granted, but not any damage to the prop guards. So I’m actually very impressed with the DJI plastic
@edgararcega30462 ай бұрын
26:28 you are actually able to fine tune the up down/ left and right movement speeds in settings. By default these types of movements are set to low speed when using the motion controller but you can make it sonthat they are done more quickly with the joystick on the controller. I didnt know about this on my avata 1 until a few months in of owning it. The difference it made was huge. The avata became a lot more agile.

Great video. To pull the grommet for the camera back through the hole, tie a short length of 4 pound test fishing line to it and then pull it through the hole. A bit of water based lube helps. The line will come off easily at that point. I had to do this with my CineLog 3.5 on all four grommets due to a major crash. Easy!

I've had one for a couple of weeks now. Watch out, don't calibrate the gimbal as the calibration process can hang and you will have to re-flash the drone firmware. Regarding the roof inspection section and using the motion controller, you can hover over area of interest and use your micro multi axis stick on the motion controller to adjust your altitude without lateral motion and also when hovering and not touching first stage of throttle trigger, raising your hand up and down will adjust camera gimbal straight up or down which would be ideal for inspecting a roof gutter or underside of the eaves. Also there is a mode switch on the motion controller to more quickly change flight mode. You need to try Sport Mode. I have 40 acres of land and the Avata 2 will rip around the whole acreage at 35 MPH. I think the most compelling positive feature of this drone is the altitude stabilization aspect. It is rock solid in this regard. We need this capability for our custom done builds and various aftermarket offerings. My concerns mirror yours and the price of the batteries makes you feel like you've been ripped off for sure. Love your vids!

Never flew manual or fpv before. Crashed my Avata 2 at least 10 times now.. Many times at 30+ mph. Trees, metal poles and even dove into ground twice. The worst was 35 mph and 15 mph vertical into ground after failing to pull up from S turn. Only had to replace 3 propellers so far. No other damage. I think it's more robust than it looks, and perfect for someone just starting. By the time I learn how to fly properly DJI will probably release O4 standalone.

Leaving toward the Avata 2. Seems like the Avata 2 is the better choice for video work while the Cinewhoop type drones are better for FPV flying/racing. Also like the tiltable gimbal on the Avata 2. I have a Mavic Pro and Phantom but no FPV gear, so starting from scratch on FPV. Cost is only around $100 more for the Avata 2 which comes with goggles 3, controller 3 and O4 video. So basically on the fence between the Geprc CineLog 25 and the Avata 2, but since my main interest is video production, leaning toward the Avata 2. Cost is about the same if I don’t buy the FPV controller and just use the motion controller.

I've chosen the route of the Avata after about a month on a Tinyhawk 3 Freestyle. I crashed and knocked out 1 battery but the other stayed in and I think that caused a short. The stock AIO is back ordered, and I don't feel comfortable risking buying the wrong board elsewhere. I was getting decent at acro and the majority of my sessions ended with safe landings and not crashing. But I still think I have plenty to learn, and the Avata 2 with care refresh should allow me to focus on flying. By the time I build some skills I'm hoping the hardware will be unlocked and I can think about building an 03/04 quad.

I think the Avata 2 would be a good choice for someone wanting to test fpv waters. If you want hardcore fpv racing / freestyle, etc. there are probably better choices, but for casual fun with fpv, it's a blast. It's loads of fun with the motion controller to zip around a big back yard, a small park, etc. or even indoor area, and you have the extras of a dji drone. I don't think you would be disappointed in the least. Get the extra batteries though to save yourself some money. One is not enough.
@BrianWood742 ай бұрын
Well, you probably already know this by now, but for those who may not... Those prop guards on the Avata 2 will take a beating, it would have handled your garden box crash just the same, maybe better than your other drone did. I have seen these things shake off HARD crashes and continue on.

From what I get, it's like owning a Macbook Pro vs a home-built gaming PC. DJI are basically the equivalent of Apple within the drone industry, on almost every level: Price, proprietary design, narrow cross-platform compatibility, typically more polished and way more accessible / easier to operate without having a deep understanding of the technology, but at the cost of customisability & freedom to tinker around with. Even right down to the similarity of their marketing and corporate identity. Shit... even the physical DJI shops that seem to be popping up all over the place, look _identical_ to Apple stores. Neither one is objectively superior, they simply cater to a different demographic, like with iPhones vs Android smartphones.
@nathanh29179 күн бұрын
I wouldn't say the phone comparison for the drones is accurate. Do feel it's more akin to the pc versus MacBook though. Pc can be many different things from built piece by peice to prebuilt solutions. While the dji drones are more like MacBooks.

To me the Avata is super cool but does not fit any need I have. I need sub 250 drones for flying around people for events. That is the only reason I got into FPV. The Avata is no where near this so no matter how cool it is, it does nothing for me. I actually broke my GEPRC prop guard last week. Lots of crashes lots of awkward indoor crashes, a Big roof bounce off my house, big bounce off concrete all as I was learning. Crashes so hard I blew the rubbers off the camera mount. But the thing that got it was attempting some flips in the yard and crashing in the grass. Luckily when I ordered my Cinebot. I ordered an entire spare frame. So I have every single part to replace. They also sent me a spare prop guard. I am going to try to super glue and baking soda back together to milk a little more life. But I proved to myself I am not really ready to flip. Or maybe I need to go in a big field and have way more altitude to recover. I do feel like the boat style build of the Cinebot25 is pretty robust. But it is a bit on the heavy side because of this. I need a 550 batt to get sub 250. I really do like how the Cinebot flys. It is much different from my Pavo20. I think the biggest difference is betaflight 4.4 vs 4.5. 4.5 is much more tunable for angle mode. I can make the Cinebot drive like it is on ice vs the pavo20 on the lowest settings is still on rails and very very responsive. It has definitely taken some tuning to get the feel I want.

don't crash and don't break it.. each DJI manufactured/plastic drone I've owned has been a money pit.. I don't like the idea of having a monthly dji bill or paying 2-3 times the value of a drone in yearly repairs, and you will if you're a moderate to daily flyer...and good luck fixing it on your own! It should be kind of expected given its flying capabilities and its' structural integrity.. You wouldn't want to fly in a plane or ride a submarine made of plastic now would you? and if so, you can expect a ton of maintenance. So Odd considering how intricate carbon fiber is to other drone companies. DJi really is about low cost vs high profits. They've got the "look" down though! Very stylish for what it is.
