It really doesn't, yeah. While money _can_ get you the best ($60k HE-1, anyone?), you can still get something really good in the likes of a Hifiman Sundara ($350 USD), Drop x Sennheiser HD6XX ($220), and the AKG 361/371/Shure SRH440 ($100-150). Value gets even crazier with IEMs, with the Moondrop Blessing 2/B2:Dusk ($320), SeeAudio Yume/Moondrop Kato/Tanchjim New Hana ($170-$180), Moondrop Aria/Starfield ($80-$110), Tripowin Mele/Adorama's Etymotic ER2SE ($50), Moondrop SSR/SSP/Blon BL-03/Tin Hifi T2 ($40), and all the way down to the Koss KSC75/Tanchjim Tanya/Moondrop Quarks ($13-20). There's something great for everyone at every price point.

I own a pair of sennheiser hd800s and I can honestly tell you it's worth the hype. Whenever I switch from the HD800s to my HD600 or Beyerdynamic DT990pro they feel loud, noisy and dirty. I straight up haven't touched my closed back headphones since I own them. If you want to make yourself feel better, keep thinking other headphones are "on par" with these flagships. Ignorance is bliss.

This is one of the most well-written and densely packed headphone review videos I've ever seen. I sold my 58x's because they have a 5db dip in the highs, it was slight but it made everything sound slightly rolled off or lacking animation. The dip in these headphones is almost 11db's. from my experience it's not necessarily where the dip is, but that there's a dip at all, as your brain is essentially charged with accounting for the change in movement of the curve. And 11db, especially to anyone bothered to mix/master is an utter cavern.

Nothing at this level is practical or “good value for money” imo. The law of diminishing returns is real. And if you’re talking gaming, that ceiling hits around the $200-$300 mark. If money were no issue, I’d game in the 800 S, but its too much for me to justify spending on headphones.

Indeed sober review of the HD8xx. Hell even the HD800S might be the holy grail for FPS shooters, but they ain't worth the asking price compared to my 157€/186$ Beyer TYGR 300R (taxes+shipping included!) or a 200$ HD560S. They are not 10 times better. IMHO past the 200-300$ tier there are steep diminishing returns for gaming audio. Plus 8xx being 300 ohm impedance vs 32 ohm they NEED a decent entry level amp/dac stack like Schitt Magni 3+/ Heresy plus Modi3, Atom +, Zen2 or Schitt hell/Mayflower Arc Mk2 dac/amp. Thats 100$ to 300$ extra....

And as time goes on, man, comfort is getting more and more important to me, even over sound-quality... 100% get your point on the LCDX. Not sure if I'm there yet, but I can kinda see myself going for something "slightly worse" in sound performance but that's more comfy, vs the inverse... Anyway, awesome comparison, B.

Have you tried to eq the 800S to your taste? I‘ve eq‘ed mine (boosting bass, slight boost in upper mids, narrow dip at the resonance) and I‘m absolutely happy with them. I have the crazy detail and soundstage with classical music and a lot of fun with metal or rock (plus a lot of surprises when some new detail of the music is revealed). I have yet to find a genre that doesn’t sound good with them - maybe Hip hop but that’s not my thing anyway 😎

Really great review, definitely enjoyed it. Only thing I would disagree with is the recommendation of needing balanced to drive a certain headphone. Balanced just usually has a lot higher power, so it is generally better for power hungry headphones, but there are plenty of single ended designs with heaps of power. The only thing jubiless have in common with 660S is similar tunning, but much worse detail retrieval and balance, drier vocals, narrower soundscape. @@badseedtech what dac / amp setup are you running the 800s on?
@lockjaw333
@lockjaw333 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a little confused on your conclusion here. Video was awesome (as usual), but it feels like you spent a lot of time talking about the 800s and just briefly touched on the 8xx sound wise. Are they better in your opinion? How big is the difference with the 800s? And most importantly are they really worth $1100, or are there cheaper options that come close in performance?
@badseedtech
@badseedtech 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the whole idea of the video, the only difference from the 800 S is the tuning. They’re not better - they’re different. Only mildly so, but in a way that will be more accessible to a wider range of people but also really piss off the people who love the 800 S. I can’t think of anything that does specifically what the 8XX does. If it exists, I haven’t heard it yet. But I can’t tell you if they’re worth it for you.

@@badseedtech just the answer I was looking for, thanks! Always interested in the 800s but the price and reports of it being bright always turned me off. Much more interested in a warmer version as this appears to be. Only have a solid state amp though...

@@lockjaw333 If you do end up going with a tube, don’t go w a hybdrid tube. I would heavily recommend getting an authentic tube amp because a lot of the lower end/medium tube hybrids barely sound any different from SS amps. I’ve only tried the Loxjie p20 in terms of hybrids, but when I looked at others reviewing the same amp or other hybrids they had the same conclusion. Not that they sound bad by any means, but they’re just not what we would’ve expected sound wise. I was chasing the warm tube sound people talk about but was turned off by the price and size of the tube amps and paid the price. Basically, just get an authentic tube amp and not a hybrid if you can afford and are willing to put up with the size.
