Drop Shot in Flood
The drop shot is basically a Japanese technique. This English term translates as “shot” because this name is said to have originated from the violence of the attack! In fact, the lure is not weighted so, when the fish sucks it in, it sinks deeply.
What is a flood?
During periods of heavy autumn or winter rain, rivers overflow their banks. Rising water levels modify the pace and currents of your rivers. The flow increases, which changes the ambush positions for predators (zander, perch, pike and catfish). They find themselves forced to take refuge in areas where the current is broken or less strong: the buffers. These positions are easily identifiable, there is a large vein of water where the current is very powerful and an area of calm. If you don't know where to tackle this fishery, there are positions such as locks, ports and marinas that constantly hold fish and are very productive during this period. Find out about the regulations of these places because fishing may be prohibited there!
The flood is often synonymous with big fish (mainly zander). Conditions are favorable for producing long and heavy fish. This is one of the best times of the year when you can hope to catch a big zander from the shore in the river.
In fact, the color of the water does not favor the penetration of light into the water, which increases the periods of activity and therefore the catchability of predators. The murky color of the river gives predators an advantage over their prey. However, you will need to slightly modify your tackle box to cope with the color of the water and the fishing conditions.
Fishing these big fish from the shore is of certain interest. You don't have to manage your drift speed or position. This being fixed, you just need to scan your spot and rotate the techniques and colors of your lures. The fish learn quite quickly, you will obtain better results on board than in a boat in certain sectors. There will be no noise and vibrations from engines harmful to your fishing or even waves from echo sounders.
What lures to use?
This is probably the question that comes up most often. There is no absolute truth, nor a miracle illusion. It's up to you to find the right combinations of the day to lure the fish. I exclusively use soft lures for flooding such as shads, slugs and grubs.
The ultra classic EASY SHINER and SWING IMPACT FAT/SLIM from Keitech are available in multiple sizes and colors. If I had to recommend the sizes that regularly bring me fish, it's mainly 4 and 5 inches. These lures prove to be fatal weapons when used under weight of 3 to 5 grams. The wide range of colors will allow you to choose UV colors or not. The colors that stand out in my opinion are the S15, the 424 and the S09. Whether on a jig head, vertically or drop shot, the mobility of Keitech rubbers makes their swims very attractive.
