The ultimate shootout between Dropbox and Google Drive.
Steve takes on the toughest question of all if you only had to choose one which would you choose!
Dropbox - db.tt/YoejcTP
Google Drive - drive.google.c...
Both filesharing systems have exceptional value, are easy to use, and have massive user basis. But there are several significant differences. Steve explores those differences and explains what they mean to you.

I Added a note to the video, as Google has dropped the pricing on Drive, $1.99f for 100GB, a big drop$9.99 for a TB Kind of kicks Dropbox to the curb if you are paying!

One thing you don't show... Dropbox allows you to selective sync individual folders throughout your folder tree. Google Drive only allows you to selective sync the top level folders (which syncs all the subfolders below it). So, for example, if your Top Level folder says "Photos" and below that you have Sub-Folders by year (2014, 2013, 2012, etc), in Google Drive you can only share all photos or none. In Dropbox I could select one specific year and have it ignore the others. I like feature in Dropbox that because I want to keep all my photos under the "photos" folder but I only want the 2014 photos on my computer. This is the SOLE reason why I have selected Dropbox. Otherwise, I'd select Google Drive.

dottotech : I think that this needs an update, or to be taken down, because its no longer valid, if not misleading. A lot has changed in 4 years. In 2018, Drive costs $1.99 month for 100GB, or $20/yr. Drive's sile sharing is granular and sends a notice with link to notify the sharee. The Docs live interactive collaboration features makes big difference, there are synching clients for Mac and Windows PC. and then there are Chromebooks . . .

While Google Drive beats Dropbox on the price. Dropbox far outshines it with respect to syncing speed and the computer resources it uses. If your just using the free account this most likely makes no difference BUT if you have a lot of data to sync then Dropbox is far superior. I needed to sync about 100 Gigs and started with Google Drive. It took forever and Gdrive continuously ran and used about 50$ of my computer resources, so it really slowed down my computer. I switched to Dropbox and moved my files and folders from GDrive to Dropbox and the difference is amazing. Dropbox uses practically no resources and it's syncing speed far outshines GDrive. I suggest you do a search for sync speed and Google Drive and you will find all kinds of people who gave up on Gdrive because of the speed and the effect it had on there computer.

Thanks so much for the wealth of knowledge that you've supplied us with. I am currently helping a friend set up her new business ventures Webpage and Blog and I have used G Drive for everything from the Graphics and visual's for social media to the mail merges and Client diary synch to her android tablet! It's a fantastic product with the office package being able to convert outside documents coming in too! I really must thank you again for the fantastically open and easy to understand media you're sharing ... I'm paying for 100GB on GDrive right now, but I'm going to choose Dropbox Pro with 1TB instead. Dropbox is simply more robust than GDrive. When we change proxys or the internet disconnects, the Dropbox client responds much quicker, while the GDrive client stalls. Also, when using auto-upload from my phone, the photos in GDrive end up in Google Photos, but in the desktop I can't find a way to organize them in folders easily. In Dropbox it's really easy. I'm a Picasa / G+ Photos user for many years, but as far as I tried, Dropbox also has some really nice tools for photos and videos.

Or maybe you don't have to choose at all. We developed a new app odrive that aggregates all your cloud storage accounts together. You can use odrive to link all your Google Drive and Dropbox accounts into a folder so you won't have to switch back and forth between different apps and accounts. It's in beta right now and it's completely free at www.odrive.com. We also collected a list of 50 free cloud storage services (blog.odrive.com/blog/2014/9/30/50-shades-of-free-cloud-storage). Sometimes you can't just choose one because certain providers have different features that caters to different needs, plus when you're working and collaborating with others chances are you can't force someone else to switch and only use what you want to use.

I used Dropbox mainly, but switched to Drive a while ago. Two things that Dropbox do better is, each file in Dropbox is backed up. so even if you overwrite or delete. you can get it back through the web. Second is that dropbpx is more widespread and supported in third party applications, it is also has native clients on more places. For example linux.

In my opinion, working with small data (20mb for example) google wins, but if you work with big archives (500mb to more) Drop box wins, main reason for me is, if you upload a 500 mb that take 2 hour for example and then you delete it by mistake, in dropbox you can paste again and only goin to indexing the file,( 30 seconds insted of the 2 hours). this is the main reason of my preference od drop box.
@Gex9z
@Gex9z 9 жыл бұрын
+Abel Quintanilla Wouldn't that mean your file isn't deleted at all? If you delete something by accident, it goes to the trash in both services. You just need to open the trash folder and 'undelete' it.

Good review. To me, they're two different animals. Dropbox is great for backups, iOS integration with other apps, and their public URL can't be beat. I use their iPad client all the time for reviewing documents, giving presentations, and uploading and archiving all my iOS pictures. Dropbox also has iterative backups. This means I can go back to a version I uploaded a month ago and find it. Google Drive has the best collaboration apps available anywhere. In my workflow, you need both.

Great post, very useful. I use two computers to write my non-fiction books. I have ten on Amazon. I have a Windows 7 desktop and to the side a Linux Mint 17 desktop. I write in LibreOffice Writer on both of them. I use Dropbox free, to pass files between the two computers. It is only a few seconds before it appears on the other one or on my Android tablet. I also use Box.com for simple storage and sharing with friends. Since I self-publish with CreateSpace, I need not share with anyone else. It works well for me. I am not happy with the simple word processor available on Google Drive as it lacks so many features I need. But I am looking at Chromebooks to see if I could do better there.

Nice review of both services. Just some things that I learned from using both: 1. Google Drive does not have a Linux client as yet but Dropbox does. This may not be an issue for some people but it was a problem for me and I am still waiting for them to add Linux support. 2. Google Drive allows you to easily revise who can edit, download or view a file after you have shared it. 3. Google Drive ties in nicely with Gmail allowing you to attach a Drive file to an email.

This is outdated. I don't how much came with the Galaxy Note 3, but when I upgraded my Galaxy Note 2 to Android Jelly Bean 4.3, my Dropbox storage was upgraded by 50 GB! (I now have close to 60 gigs.) I assume this is similar to what one gets with the Note 3. When I need a cloud for business, I will use Dropbox, and pay for a large amount. So, while I also have Norton Zone, Mega, and of course, Google Drive, Dropbox is what I use. I have not complaints as to storage. The only problem I have is that I can no longer transfer video via USB, using Dropbox. It does it only via WiFi, which is difficult with large files. I used to be able to do this. I do not understand the source of this glitch, and neither does Dropbox. (So with video, I turn off-auto-upload, until I have transferred my video. And then I turn it on again.) There are NO other problems!

~ 9:00 ... don't forget to mention, that G-Drive documents don't need any space on your account... ;-) a question... is it now possible, with Dropbox, that you can give just for subfolders "certen rights" (reading or writing rights) to members of your group? ... 'cos this was the main reason, why we (our assosiation) changed to G-Drive...
@dottotech
@dottotech 10 жыл бұрын
Great point Sabel, thanks for that! You can certainly share a folder. And using the Web app you can assign individual rights, so I THINK it will do what you want!
@Sabsl1986
@Sabsl1986 10 жыл бұрын
Yes for "one" folder... the main folder... I thought about the sub-folders... For example... - main association (folder) - Our own Team (folder) in both are many sub-folders... and if you need to work with someone else (for graphic stuff, pictures, ec.ec.), who is not in the daily board of the "main association", you surely don't want to share all "sub-folders" with critical informations with this person... so in G-Drive you can give him/her only the rights for the sub-folder he/she needs... Or lets say, the marketing guy... don't need the right to write in the folder of the event coordinator guy... with Dropbox this wasn't possible... only for the main folder... at least ~ one year ago...

If I correctly understand what you're saying around 6:10, you say that the more you sync, the more you use out of your quota. Per my understanding, that does not affect your usage. What you have on the "Google Drive" is what you have, the only difference is whether I see it as a local folder on my hard drive. For example, say that in my Google Drive I have "Vacation 2013" folder, that I want to make available for offline on my home computer only, and "Invoices" that I want to make available for offline on my office computer, I will sync them accordingly. The fact that I sync some folders with some computers and other folders with other computers does not change the fact that on the "Google Drive" itself all of them are counted as part of my used space. Correct me if I misunderstood something.

Recently as a result of taking your Productivity Course, have moved away from Outlook and iPhone combo to iPhone & Google. I think I will use GoogleDrive for my own stuff and use the Dropbox simpler file sharing system with other Directors in our sailing club. I notice that "Box" is aggressively marketing "Free" "Box " for iPhone & iPad- 50 Gigs encrypted cloud storage" . This could shift the goal posts maybe? .

I have both, actually I have three, One Drive (Skydrive), Dropbox, and Google Drive. Dropbox will give you more data if you use the online website and click on share more space. I add to at least two computer, two tablets and my phone so I go 100GB for free for a year. Now I got 48GB left for a year. Plus with Dropbox you can share files and folders with others. I save a few digital files with my family that are 2-3GB in size.

Steve, have you had any issues running both Dropbox and GDrive apps on your computer? I'm curious how you compare them in their syncing efficiency. I realize that might open a can of worms, since it is partially dependent on your ISP and computer model. But assuming one has a fast computer and internet connection, how do the apps compare? I used both for a couple years, but the GDrive app used to wrestle primacy every time it synced, interrupting whatever task I was doing. So, I dumped the app and managed GDrive through the web interface. NOW, the Dropbox app gives me problems, frequently indexing and hogging CPU power. Furthermore, if Time Machine and Dropbox often tend to run simultaneously, which causes my computer to run significantly slower. I'll probably have to keep both Dropbox and GDrive accounts, but I'm considering switching back to GDrive, in terms of the app installed, in hopes that some bugs have been worked out. What has been your experience? Can they coexist?

I am using the Internet to communicate with the future. Sadly, this is only one-way communication - I am unable receive any reply. So I am storing documents of interest to family members yet unborn. (The documents relate to family history), So which organization is most likely to be in business one hundred years hence? Based upon relative size, I have to choose Google Drive,

Thanks for your reply Steve. I am always concerned about Google and the issue of privacy. Maybe one of these services should provide a completely private service (annually audited) for a fee. You do a great job and I am an avid follower. Can't wait for next week's report. All the best to you.

I am new to the CLOUD. my wife and i have 2 pc computers, 1 ipad and 2 iphones. I have marketing business. I share files in our network on pc. but get errors and i am tired of them (you dont have access to this, read only) LOL. I am also moving from my home office to a office building. So i am looking at what is my best option for just starting out on this. I have files on 2 computers and it makes it difficult to remember where it is. Also Would you recommend backing up family pictures, kids on the cloud so you don't loose them or using an external hard drive. I enjoyed your tv show when it was on , no I subscribed on KZbin. Thanks Steve

DropBx can use any mail-address, Gdrive needs a gmail account as far as I know. so you can use a "general" mailadress (eg info@etc..) to create a DropBox and share items with several people, including you personal mail-address. So you cna reall seperate your own DropBox, shielded from other users.

dottotech, I have used both Google Drive and Dropbox pretty regularly for years. But over the past year or so have moved pretty much over to Dropbox for a very specific reason: you do not have as many functions, formatting, etc., options when working with Google Worksheets, Documents, etc. This was a HUGE drawback from Dropbox. I understand that if you do not have MS, this may not be an issue. However, I've learned my lesson the hard way when using Google Worksheets and lost tons of data, so will only use Worksheets with very small and simple amounts of data. The same with Google Documents vs MS Word, such limited formatting was a big issue. While I love that Google allows multiple people in the same document at the same time, each able to edit accordingly, when I need to finalize a document I always have to pull it out and go to MS and store in Dropbox. Also, I had not heard the Google was now available as a download onto your desktop similar to Dropbox, so will have to see if this is useful. Thanks for your comparison of both.

I am really very confused as to how syncing folders and files works. After loads of trials and errors (mostly errors and frustrations deleting files accidentally - until I understood the direction of the sync...) Back to my original thought: After loading my (Onedrive) folder with a folder I want to sync up - I practiced syncing and it didn't work - until I realized the origin of the folder was not the one copied and placed into Onedrive. POINT: The only successful way to sync a folder is to copy it into the Onedrive folder. When I make a change in (Desktop) for example - it won't change in the cloud. The folder was copied from the "user" area - which I thought was the origin of the folder and not just a shortcut version. So, if I want to sync the folders, I have to chose them from the onedrive folder - and not access them from the usual place - lets say from a shortcut on the desktop. If I create a document - I must save that document in the document folder in the onedrive folder - not the usual document folder I would normally save it in - accessed from a shortcut on my desktop. It is so frustrating!!! If you are able to follow this - could you please help me by suggesting how to organize my folders so they will actually sync?

I just noticed your post! You should definitely check out ShareFile: a secure way to send sensitive information (encrypted) and large files directly through your email (Outlook or Gmail), eliminating user names/passwords, similar to Dropbox, but built for business with unlimited storage and increased security. We also offer a Portal option, so your clients can get the best of both worlds. I would like to get on your calendar for a quick 15 minutes to go over our platform and get your professional opinion on the tool. Please give me a call sometime this week and I will set something up! DL : 919-582-5640

Hi Steve. I'm new to your channel and love your "show". I see that this vid is a few years old. I use both services but I prefer dropbox. The main thing reason is that files that are "shared with me", do not show up in my file browser. If someone else created the file and shared it with me, I have to copy the file to my drive. Annoying. Also, I feel that I get better customer service and online help if I need it with Dropbox. Just my .02 Thanks for all you do!

Sharing continues to be problematic with Google Drive. If I want to share collaborating privileges, some people (with non-gmail addresses) are not able to see/edit the doc. However, my problem with Dropbox is that multiple people can access the same file at the same time without being aware of it, thus producing conflicted copies. That is a real pain. In Google, you can edit at the same time and see what the other(s) are doing. That is awesome. But in dropbox it doesn't even tell the file is read only (unless you add a 3rd party plugin - which also has problems.) I personally prefer to use Google Drive as I feel it offers a lot more. But the sharing issue is a big drawback.

ok so I'm super new to this all ..and what I'm trying yo figure out us this ....I have a galaxy s6 that comes with 32gb that it ...I listened and download alot of music and take lots off pics ..plus I have a fair amount of apps so now I'm left with 7gb left and I have a lot more things that I would like to download ..I would like to note that. .there is no way of putting in a sd card in the galaxy s6 they took all that away. ..so without having to buy a USB converter or whatever. .I was wondering if I use Drive if that will give me extra GB cause it comes on my phone and it says 15gb if I use it ...I'm just not sure how to or if it will even work and give me space. .also if I do use drive will it all stay on my phone or do I have to go to a computer to access my stuff ...oh and one more thing. .is drive just a back up? or can I take the music and photos on my phone using up my 32gb ..put it on the drive app and still be able to listen to my music the same way. .and if I do that will it take my music and photos go to the drive use up the 15gb and free the space off the GB that it's using on my phone. .the 32gb...I hope you understand all that and hope I can get a clear answer back soon

I don't see it as an either of situation. I use Microsoft One Drive. 5 TB storage with my $100 a year Office 365 for syncing. I also have Dropbox and use it for sharing as it's easiest for sharing. I use Google Drive for collaborating on documents. And if you combine the free versions of all three, you have the online storage of all three combined.

What if you sing up with more than one account and link all accounts together, this gives you a big huge space for free. In case you don't / can't pay this is a helpful tip, it might get confusing or difficult but it is a way.☺☺☺😊

I don't get this 'syncing between devices' guff. Google Drive and OneDrive 'sync' through the internet in the application itself, you don't need a browser open or anything. Why would you sync folders? Just copy and paste it into Drive

as a programmer, i see google drive is really difficult to integrate our app or website to. dropbox has very straight forward sdk to help us interact with their api (upload, download, search files) while in google drive, i haven't really found any tutorial about it. the documentation is also hard to understand for basic programmer like me. if anyone reading this and actually find google drive api is really easy to you, you can let me know where do i start learning it. thank you :D
