Just a suggestion: next time you're at the Dollar Store, check the hardware section for a painter's drop cloth. You can usually get around an 8' X 12' 2 or 3 mil drop cloth which gives you more options for a shelter. I keep one in my truck and car here in Wyoming, they do come in handy when needed.

This series has been really interesting. I think I would have burned the glochids off the cactus fruit - those things are no joke - I got one in my lip once - apparently they can just be singed off with an open flame.

I have been using that saw on my excursions for the past three months and if you rub it with a wax candle it will work fantastic. I cut thru branches 3-4 inches thick once I waxed it. And I agree those gloves are awesome. They are even heat and flame resistant.

Water filtration and dollar store multipurpose item: One of the most handy items in my kit is a roll or two of doggie doodoo bags. Many uses. One use is a simple water filter: in an empty baggie add a handful of sand then a generous amound of crushed charcoal from your fire. Poke pin holes near one corner for water to drain. This filter should vastly reduce if not eliminate all pathogens from the water that trickles out, and no need to wreck your bottle. Other bag uses - put over socks if traversing really wet ground or when putting wet shoes back on in the cold morning. In extreme cold, many bags can be inflated or even filled with duff/leaves/grass for air pocket insulation. Can also be used as a bedpan in a pinch so you dont have to climb out into the cold.

Your relaxed & positive attitude impressed me more than the other commendable skills you exhibited. You seem to have no apparent anxiety thus far; it is more like you are excited about enjoying a night in the woods. You portray the mind-set of someone who enjoys camping more than struggling through a survival scenario. The area where your camp is located reminds me of an overgrown Pecan Orchard. Why not take a ziplock bag to the creek first thing, before or during the food scavange? 2) why didn't you bring one gallon jug of water (in lieu of the second, smaller bottle of water)? You should have gotten a $1.00 pair of tweezers to pull the thorns out. You cut the cactus pads , use glove to hold over the fire and burn the thorns off. Then you can cook the pads and eat them.
