This has gotta be the reason why so many people go missing in the woods. Walking along through the leaf litter off the beaten path, not really paying attention, next thing you know the world collapses underneath you and you're in a cave with an injury. Spooky stuff!

this is why you always need to have a perfect stick, elders did have, caveman did have, monkeys did have A perfect stick, one that can touch the ground while you have it on your hand

@@EstamosDe I walk with a staff everywhere I go hiking so I've done the math. You got less then a 50/50 chance of finding a hole in front of you assuming its already partially opened up enough for a stick to punch in. Mind you thats going to happen only 1ft ahead of you. By the time you realise you got no time to step back. Its the weight of your body that would most likely open it up and swollow you and thats a wrap. So a stick is practically useless in preventing you from falling in.

I have a 10' ladder set up in a lava tube exit. It's about 25' down. Its purpose is to get me from the floor of the tube to the next level where I can free-climb the remaining 25 feet. That was an hour-and-a-half hike carrying that thing over an open lava flow field. At least I didn't have to carry it back. I used to be able to pull myself up to the upper level but the ledge I used to pull myself up on broke off.

Y'all should try some of our caves here in Huntsville, Alabama. Caves run under the entire city.. and beyond. Back in the 1920's, they even had a dance hall in one of them. When I was a kid, we used to go in some of them a little way, but back then, the flashlights were ridiculous at best, so we couldn't venture very far. The National Speleological Society is near one of the larger entrances.. contact them for more info.

This is also the reason why a lot of people go missing out in the West. Lots of vertical mine shafts. They covered them with metallic or wood covers when they were created. Naturally, after that length of time, they rust and rot, so stepping on them breaks right through them. They can be covered with dirt/grass and look like the rest of the ground. Typically they'd have ladders going straight down for many, many levels - sometimes dozens. You could fall 20 feet or fall 200 feet. The ladders were wooden makeshift ladders, essentially...so over time those also rot. Even if you lived, no way out.

You need electron ladders (which roll up to fit in a pack)! A lot easier than those, but I guess are harder to climb. You guys in the US don't have a published central database there so how do you know if it's new? But I am very interested in your phone scanning app, which app is that and does it work with Samsung? I always use a compass, clino and distance measuring for surveying. Does the app give you length up and down, I guess the app could be used combined with compass, clino etc and make a really detailed survey.
