If he’s working ~4 hours a week as an actor plus the occasional gig (maybe an 8-hour day once a month?) then I really don’t understand why he isn’t picking up extra shifts at Target. I dunno…. On the one hand, he’s a college kid (only 20) and has over $5k in savings, that he earned himself. He hasn’t figured out his path yet but really, how many kids that age have? I also think kids that age respond better to hearing personal stories from their mentor-like, “hi I’m Caleb, I also pursued an artistic field of study and even had tremendous debt from doing stupid sh!t but here’s how I turned things around… And yeah, I had to drop my artistic dreams in order to survive.” Sometimes these interviews are sounding more “all or nothing” blanket-type advice, similar to that given by “he who shall not be named.” On the other hand, he’s spending thousands a month on random restaurants etc! It’s great his credit card limit is so low… It’s too bad his parents didn’t grant him the luxury of on-campus housing and a meal plan, so he could better balance school with just one gig that really aligned better with his aspirations, and use his gig money for fun things or for furthering his career, whatever. Working full time during school is hard! And can make school not feel as worth it.

Hey Caleb, one thing to note is that the standard deduction for a single filer for 2022 is 12,950 so with such a low income he actually might be ok with regards to taxes (for this year). He's only getting taxed on the money made above 12,950 (federally), plus no state income tax in Texas. Also, anything he makes from 12,950 to 23,225 is only taxed 10% federally. For most people it definitely makes sense to put aside the 30% but at such a low income he might be ok for the 2022 calendar year. Going forward for 2023 he should make it a goal to set aside 25-30%. I really don't think this kid is too bad. He's aware he's in a temporary state of lower earning, he's not like that zeek fella with absolutely no grasp on what to do, how to do it or what's realistic but oozed confidence for some reason. I can totally see this kid picking up enough gigs & experience to eventually transition into teaching theatre. If he's serious about the whole "if I haven't started earning enough in 6 months the acting will assume a secondary role for the foreseeable" then he's not delusional with it and I say go for it kid. Texts coming through for work shows he's doing a decent job of advancing himself in the local industry. He did transfer savings money to survive but he said he saved that money specifically to allow him this time to push the acting. I'd definitely like to see a follow up with him. Starting my own business because it's what i wanted to do could've been argued as immature for me in a very similar way. Many a year later, I'm INFINTELY glad I stuck with my choice and didn't end up in an office somewhere under fluro lights all day. When you're asking him what else he enjoys other than arts and he gives you that blank look, that's quite telling to me that the kid really should try very hard to get established in the arts.

I don’t understand why these ppl can’t see that the world of acting is governed by nepotism and other personal connections. And unless you have those, nothing is gonna happen for you. That should be so obvious. Does everyone really think they are just so special and different they will be the exception?

Can we get the UT set design dude, Alex, and this dude together to learn some stuff? Even with his bad debt, I felt like Alex had a lot of possible side hustles (costume design, graphic design, architectural software, etc) and the grit to want to make it happen. Those things are still an outlet for the arts and creative.

He’s just a kid. He should pursue this dream all in. And if it doesn’t work out, at 22, 23, he’s still young af. And if he has that support to fall back on then even better! Not everyone’s situation is the same

I think he’s doing great! I made the same amount at like age 25 to chase dreams (my money was taxed but I had zero savings and massive cc debt). He’s at an age where it’s time to try new things and go after what you want. He has plenty of time to make the change later and seeing as how he’s doing now I’m sure he’ll make good decisions in the future. I eventually landed one of my dream jobs and make well over six figures and it’s really all because I gave it a chance. Wishing him luck!

Kampton seems absolutely lovely, Caleb is being way too harsh on him. He's in college, he's working putting in a lot of hours at Walmart, he's getting some little acting gigs on the side and wants to pursue that as a passion. You're only 20 once; you absolutely should pursue your dreams at that age. He could spend the next ten years chasing his acting goals, and even if he fails he's still only 30 and has the rest of his life ahead of him. By that time, if he's been focussing heavily on the acting and still hasn't made it, he will have been immersed in the performing arts, surrounded by directors, producers, scriptwriters, camera operators. Even if he never becomes a major movie star, he absolutely will have a career in the arts because he will have been putting himself in the right situations with the right people. Caleb's negativity is really rubbing off on him; I can picture him smiling and being happy and enthusiastic and actually having really likeable qualities that actors need. How come there are no links to his socials? Surely he should get some promotion out of appearing on Caleb's show?

This is one of the few episodes where I disagree with Caleb. I think he if right to pursue acting with a dogged singular purpose. He will either fail and hit up against reality hard. Or he’ll succeed. But this is how it must be.

I appreciate that these kids are actually not doing anything wrong necessarily (for their age). But caleb being the Legend he is, is driving the reality of America to them even at the young ages these participants are. Chase your dreams but remember and be attentive to when ur fucking alarm clock goes off and get up and do what needs to be done.
@SpoonHurler Жыл бұрын
I don't agree with the idea that you have to be 100 percent "dead set on your goal" to "make it". He's going to end up 35 as a middle manager at Target when he's one of the 999999 to 1 that "makes it." You can grind a full time time job to pay the bills and spend 10-40 hours doing what you dream to do and if it really is your job that extra time won't even feel like work and if it does then maybe you should re-evaluate the dream.

Wants to be a actor but is in school for undecided business exploration. Maybe take some theater classes? Minor in theater with a backup major degree. Idk, I see him as a supporting role character; but I’m not feeling the charisma or confidence of a famous actor. Very naive too, would hate to see him actually make it only to be swindled by a greasy agent/manager.

There are so many options here. I recommend to take a sabbatical for a semester. It’s great to pursue a dream. The most successful play the long game even in acting. Can take years. I just sense a lot of trying to figuring out. I don’t sense commitment to one thing. Trying to be a star is unrealistic in 6 months. Over a decade of learning to act. Tacking theater gigs or working for troupes.
