If you use a [barrier gate middle] at the fighting position and push up against it, you can still hit the zombies, but they can't reach you. Been using the [barrier gate middle] setup for several years. :Note I haven't tested this with Knuckles since I don't use them.

Works but barrier needs to be placed 1 block back from the scaffolding

I thought dogs were changed to be unable to scale ladders?
