What a shame, the concept seemed so good, but know I know not to waste my time at least! Thank you for the review!

I'm late to the party but I just finished reading this book about an hour ago. Right off the bat as a male reader diving into a book written by a female author from Washington state my first thought was "please don't make all the male characters either pathetically weak, stupid, or comically arrogant and/or violent. Meanwhile making all the female characters strong, intelligent, superior survivors who are constantly being made to seem like victims of these awful men they're surrounded by." That's exactly what happened, Jillian was insufferable. Constantly negative, rude, self congratulating while also trying to take 100% of the credit and blame for no reason. Always being as short tempered and rude to her husband who still loved her as possible. The second everyone learns Jason, Tory's boyfriend of 3 years, dies they immediately start roasting the guy and how terrible he was. Right in front of Tory. Saying he was a controlling asshole because he begged Tory not to throw her life away and leave him over chasing mermaids....a totally reasonable thing to do. Tory even calls him an asshole, again RIGHT after hearing he basically liquified to death. I ended up skipping so many paragraphs that broke up the action sequences or tense conversations by needlessly going off on tangents about the past, the characters motivations for coming aboard, or repeatedly reminding us of their loved one that died and how that made them feel. Half a dozen times or more throughout the book a scene would end with "....and no one said a word" to the point that out loud I said "STOP SAYING AND NO ONE SAID A WORD!" At points I could tell the author had taken breaks from writing and forgotten that she'd already said certain lines describing the characters relationships. Word for word the same information that had been written chapters before. There's a lot I could complain about but by far the biggest and most annoying thing about the book was by far the deaf twins. They were so narcissistic and rude simply because this entire boat full of people had the audacity to not learn fluent sign language just for them. It came up so many times. This was supposedly the most technologically advanced boat possible yet they didn't carry speech to text devices? Still needed to be followed around by their sister/interpreter 24 hours a day or they had no way of communicating with people? So. Incredibly. Annoying.

also here a year later lmao and wow talk about victim complex, all the characters were pretty insufferable and the male characters literally weren’t portrayed any more negatively than female ones were (I’d go as far to say they were portrayed better)-one man literally saved his friends life, another fought a mermaid off while giving time for the girls to run bffr you said it yourself there was 1 male character portrayed as bad and multiple females portrayed as rude and narcissistic

Kinda wonder how the creatures function too. Why do they need the matriach to come up to kill everyone when the drones could do that themselves and still feed the matriarch? I read a sample and wondered if I should buy it. There are also a lot of mixed reviews that I saw with and without spoilers, but I think I could do without buying it. It does sound like it would make a fun monster movie to watch where you don't need to think about things too deeply, especially it the horror part is well done.

It was definitely scary, no doubt about it. It would make a very good horror movie, almost like the creepiness attached to that one mockumentary called Mermaids: The Body Found. As a movie, it would do well, but It kind of missed the mark as a book.

Ugh I agree with all of this, it was soooo infuriating. Especially Toth was honestly unbearable. I also didn't need the dolphin's or the mermaid's POVs. I really didn't. Also the ending was stupid.

Right? The ending was so anticlimactic, like what was the point?

So, so much crap packed into that novel. I'll mention only one point because I havent seen it in any review : Book is full of smart, highly skilled women that happened to be also very attractive. Fair enough. But when talking about the ship security crew, writer keeps remind us how those guys are all way too good looking and ripped to be reliable. Writer goes as far as writing that the fact that there are all males proves that they have been recruited for look only, and so are surely incompetent. Im still trying to figure out the logic here. Also imagine being a multi million dollars company putting up such a mission with very high stakes but you cant manage to recruit a team of security bros that are both competent and good looking. Also, main tv-show hostess loses her cameraman very early on and no one is attached to her as a replacement? The whole project is built around being a future tv-show and they dont send a cameraman once the action actually starts? The dolfin subplot was great a way to show that the writer was absolutely clueless about most of the things appearing in her book.

I agree that the characters were the weakest part of the book both with portrayal and development. All of them were skewed in different points of morality and not well written. The most intriguing part of the book was the mystery and discovery of the mermaids themselves. Good review

This book was so ass. I gave up 30% in - barely any mermaids at that point. Far too much boring backstory on female scientists and not enough killer mermaids. Slow & boring

My turn... YES. I completely hated this book for all the reasons you say here, and I thought I was the only one. It was TERRIBLE. I actually gave it one star. I was SO incredibly bored and angry that I couldn't even finish. And I tired to keep going. Twice. DNF'ed when they got to the trench. I have considered going back and trying the rest thinking maybe that's where it gets good... but no. I think your review has dissuaded me of that notion LOL.

As a male reader.... I felt strait up discriminated against in this book, it was Great. Didn't really have much of a problem with the story. Good way to burn time. Though the dolphin scene was pretty cool. Kinda wish they got some more done with the captured siren and the hand sign communication with the humans. I will say, that ending was some hot ass garbage though. Should of just killed everyone at the end and called it a day imo. Better then lights scared the main antagonist away :/ as the way to conclude the whole book.
